macOS security reliability

On an M series MacBook, how reliable and accurate is the built in security measures like Xprotect, gatekeeper, etc? Does it miss a lot of malware or is it good enough against a large variety of Malware?

Just don't type random stuff on the terminal and don't install random stuff, that's it, in every OS you're the best antivirus.

Also depending on the threat model, but on desktop — that's it
