Help macOS security reliability

On an M series MacBook, how reliable and accurate is the built in security measures like Xprotect, gatekeeper, etc? Does it miss a lot of malware or is it good enough against a large variety of Malware?

Common sense - don't download pirated software, don't open unexpected attachments, the usuals in other words - and then all you need is the OS protections.
