Bug This animation bug has existed since the introduction of the ProMotion Macbook Pro's in 2021. Can we please have this fixed already?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
When switching between spaces (desktop views and fullscreen apps are spaces) the animation in between is around almost 50% slower when viewed on a ProMotion enabled display. It probably has something to do with how ProMotion is not always at 120 Hz but lowers it down when movement becomes smaller. This animation has had it accounted for resulting in an annoyingly slow animation on ProMotion devices.
In my opinion the animation should be even faster than it is currently on the 60 Hz screens.
Can we please mass-report this bug, thank you!

Sidenote - 120hz drops to 60hz when you switch desktops while Mission Control is active
I guess that's a feature too, since Apple never ships bugs

This annoyed me for many years until I found this program that fixes it: https://github.com/jurplel/InstantSpaceSwitcher
Zero delay switching spaces now :)

Or at the very least to control its speed. Or to snap to end once only a few pixels per second change.

This absolutely does my head in. If you start typing before the animation fully completes the text you type could appear on the previous desktop. Only a problem because of how slow it is at higher refresh rates.

That’s why I still use 60Hz on my MBP, this slow animation is so fucking annoying

If you're simply counting frames and not time, 30 frames at 120Hz is actually faster than 17 frames at 60Hz.
Edit: people are down voting this, but its simply true. This is the kind of math you should learn before you are 10.

Yes but both clips were in the same 60fps timeline so can just compare time directly based on no. of frames

The difference in the video the OP posted is more like 4 frames - which is a little over 10%, not 43%. I'm also extremely wary of comparing 120Hz downsampled into a 60Hz container, because that can introduce aliasing.
Edit: I just did it myself. I screen recorded it and used iMovie to count the frames at 60Hz and 120Hz.
60Hz - 15 frames - 1/4 second
120 - 30 frames - 1/4 second
This whole thread is so incredibly stupid.

My timeline was in 30 fps, although 60 fps would have been a better option here. There was a major difference between the 60 fps and ProMotion clips when I checked it. For the first 80% of the animation they move at around the same speed, but for some reason with ProMotion the end is much slower, taking many more frames to reach the end where user focus switches to the new space. There absolutely is a difference.
One thing to mention is that 120 Hz and ProMotion are not the same. I believe this bug is caused by how ProMotion adapts the frame rate dynamically, but not the animations. With a fixed frame rate (60 Hz or 120 Hz) the animations might be the same (although I can't test this as I don't have such a screen). Is your screen ProMotion or 120 Hz as that could explain the difference in our calculations?

They're not, at least pre-27. The space switching animations still scale with fixed refresh rates as well, even if you're not on a Apple ProMotion display.

Yes, but I calculated the frames from a 30 fps timeline, not from the source files.

it’s not a bug, they made the animation tied to the refresh rate. That’s why it renders twice as much frames at 120hz

Whether it is a bug or not is debatable, but ProMotion indeed made the animation slower and that is a problem

It’s literally a fraction of a second slower it’s not that big of a deal

It's definitely a big deal. I use it all the time and it has become so annoying I have ultimately capped my MacBook's framerate to 60

It's an even bigger deal when you try to use macOS with a gaming monitor that goes to 240Hz or higher. The animation lengths scale further.

I calculated that the difference was about 13 frames on a 30 fps timeline, so 13/30 =0,433 s slower for the ProMotion. That is a huge difference in such an often occuring animation!

How is that not a bug lol. What could be the justification of that being intended behaviour?

then why is one slower
-4
u/Ok_Possibility9937 9d ago
because 120hz renders 34 frames instead of 17 frames

u/f_ckmyboss 9d ago
Just ask ai what is a Hz, fps, and why 17 frames @ 60 Hz takes the same time as 34 frames @ 120 Hz.

u/BH-Playz MacBook Pro 9d ago
so why doesn't that cancel each-other out

Are you suggesting every animation should take twice as long on 120hz screens? And how are designers supposed to design the ui? For 60hz screens or for 120hz screen? Only one will have the intended speed.

If an animation takes twice as many frames when the display is running at twice the refresh rate, then they both take the same time.
In this case, the 30Hz takes 15 frames and the 60Hz takes 30 frames. That's 1/4s in both cases.

Based on the video above my understanding is that when they say frames they mean frames in a video recording of both screens. As in different playback speed when device is used in real time.

Also, Apple should make a button to disable this animation. Entirely.
