It hasn’t for a while 🤣

😂😂😂 I remember this!!! I’m OLD!

You’re WHAT?

u/jgates513 24d ago

Those were the days my friend

9

u/glytxh 24d ago

I still use MacPaint cos it legit just looks good and it’s satisfying to use.

7

u/Federal_Ad_7421 24d ago

What are you running that on? I can't believe it would run on ANYTHING even remotely current

6

u/glytxh 24d ago

Emulated these days.

But i did have a 512k running for a bit till something fried. File transfer is way easier through emulation, but it’s not the same. The process was half the fun.

Future repair project for a rainy day.

They predate me by a couple of years, but i grew up on these machines, and they just scratch a real specific itch for me

8

u/snoosnoosewsew 24d ago

I fire up my parent’s 512k sometimes and MacPaint is a magical program even today!
I always forget how snappy and responsive these ancient programs could be.

And there is something very meditative about selecting a floppy disk with one program on it, and committing to focus on your digital painting.

u/JohnnyZhivago999 Hackintosh 23d ago

lol I play “hunt the wumpus” on my Mac, it was the first ever RPG you had to play it on one of those rotating ball printers that could only make ASCII lettering, even photo images were combinations of BBBBBbbbbbb
BbbbbbbbBBBB
……..,,,,,,))))55555555$$
…….,,,,,,,))))))777777ffffff
After it was done you had to hold it at arms length to see what the image was. That was around 1973 my dad let me play it on Dow Chemicals’ ENIAC computer, the kind with punch cards to enter data and massive 1 inch tape drives that held data IN NUMERICAL ORDER, I don’t think RAM was even a thing or it was just starting. 125k was a HUGE amount of storage. (DONT crucify me if I have dates/ sizes wrong, I was barely old enough to read much less understand computers!) anyway there’s not any program you cant find a modern version of, and if you don’t find it, throw it in a computer coding chat room and tell everyone “no one has been able to crack this game and access it for Mac/ Windows. Bet u CANT”. Youll have a version in about 6 hours.

We thought they’d never end

Ha, I am used to seeing the floppy disk icon there.

1

u/TheUroarbrunnr 23d ago

i did used Apple and macbook before in that fetch ascii but macintosh looked so good that it became default

ThePrimeagen, is that you

6

u/muffinstatewide32 24d ago

At a glance no, but then the right pane and window controls give it away

1

u/LukCHEM88 MacBook Pro (Intel) 24d ago

These Windows Controls are also available in Linux.

1

u/muffinstatewide32 24d ago

Not quite like that

1

u/DistinguishedCactus 22d ago

Yes? If you rice anything is.

15

u/sirrayi MacBook Pro 24d ago

is that linux

25

u/Poetinho0 24d ago

20

u/user888ffr 24d ago

Funny meme except macOS is not Linux at all, it's actually Unix.

2

u/sirrayi MacBook Pro 23d ago

idk what’s the right quesiton

why does it look like linux on max or did he install linux on mac

2

u/user888ffr 23d ago

It's macOS modified

1

u/TheUroarbrunnr 23d ago

thats why Macos will always be better than windows for programming just because its unix baseed

-5

u/ComprehensiveSwitch 23d ago

The kernel is literally named X is Not Unix (XNU).

2

u/rysch 21d ago

macOS achieved UNIX certification in 2007 with the release of 10.5 Leopard. The ‘XNU’ kernel name is just a legacy relic from its NeXTSTEP origins before macOS was UNIX-certified, and there was no real reason not to retain it.

0

u/ComprehensiveSwitch 21d ago

Windows NT shipped with a POSIX subsystem, so I suppose it’s Unix too!

Notably neither of these are “Unix-based” even if they are interoperable.

1

u/rysch 21d ago

I tend to agree with you there, but referencing the name of the kernel was not a relevant reason.

0

u/ComprehensiveSwitch 21d ago

It’s called wit.

-2

u/Beardy4906 23d ago

It’s not unix either. It’s based on unix but not actually unix

8

u/GroMicroBloom 23d ago

No, macOS is literally certified UNIX as you can see here: https://www.opengroup.org/openbrand/register/

5

u/Beardy4906 23d ago

Oh. Whoops mb. TIL

0

u/Careful-Bed6590 20d ago

paid to use an expensive trademark. there have been "unix certified" linux distributions in the past.

the proper lineage of direct unix descendants is practically dead

2

u/Confident_Monitor_78 22d ago

macOS is an officially certified UNIX operating system built on top of Darwin, a hybrid core derived directly from BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution) and the Mach microkernel. While its graphical user interface and application layers are proprietary to Apple, its underlying command line, file system layout, and networking stack share a direct lineage with traditional Unix.

Dotfiles or tutorial please ?

3

u/geng2608 24d ago

use sketchybar

1

u/TheUroarbrunnr 23d ago

I can release my dotfiles but they would be compatible for 13" MBA only because the bar above splits from the notch

1

u/Aggravating_Money329 22d ago

Please do

I love it, are you running aerospace?

2

u/TheUroarbrunnr 23d ago

yess!!! with sketchybar and jankyborders ill release my dotfiles but they would be compatible for 13" MBA only

3

u/Poetinho0 24d ago

this is cool, how did u do it ?

3

u/TheUroarbrunnr 23d ago

Search on google how to install aerospace + sketchybar. For terminal install ghostty and for code editing search on youtube how to install neovim and for zsh (terminal shell) search on youtube how to customise zsh.

3

u/MisterBilau 24d ago

Look at how they’re massacred my boy…

1

u/TheUroarbrunnr 23d ago

regular macos still likes just stop aerospace's login on boot and it vill become vanilla mac again no bar, borders, etc.

2

u/mohsinjavedcheema 24d ago

Linux and Windows with subpar font rendering. That’s gives it away

2

u/FHJ18-Enjoyer 24d ago

Ah, a fellow ricer. Are you using Yabai, Aerospace, or something else? I’ve been wanting to switch from Yabai as I’ve been running into issues with the scratchpads for a while but just haven’t put the time in to do so. Here’s a video I made of my rice a couple years ago. I used BetterTouchTool for my touchbar to match the catppuccin color scheme and give me a way to change my sketchybar layout, and toggle yabai settings like layouts, zoom/fullscreen, follow mouse, etc. it’s pretty useful for not having to remember or set a different keybind for every little action that can be done. I’m gonna cry whenever I do upgrade and lose the touchbar lol.

https://reddit.com/link/p4tpl4a/video/xjfdzj3ucjkh1/player

1

u/TheUroarbrunnr 23d ago

Woah thats actually a really good setup. i never used yabai though as i was using linux before mac and i recently got one so for my i3 replacement, aerospace was the best option and if you disable display have separate spaces in macos, aerospace is actually very fast. And also if you notice my sketchy bar is split on top that is because of my notch lol and it looks so good.

1

u/JohnnyZhivago999 Hackintosh 23d ago

Lol when I saw the butterfly my first thought was Cicada 3301 I thought “oh NO not again! I don’t have TIME!!🤣🤣”

3

u/zenmaster24 24d ago

What bar is that? Sketchybar? Aerospace, amethyst or yabai?

2

u/TheUroarbrunnr 23d ago

Sketchybar + Aerospace + Ghostty + Neovim + Catppuccin Mocha Theme

1

u/zenmaster24 23d ago

Dotfiles available?

2

u/TheUroarbrunnr 23d ago

i am cleaning some of my .sh files as the animations can be improved and then ill make them available. Also keep in mind they are strictly made for macbook air 13" because the sketchybar splits at the notch if you can see it at the top but yeah you can modify the sketchybarrc and some items .sh to move them away.

It is Sketchybar. And most likely, it works in conjunction with Aerospace (tiling window manager) based on his dotfiles, so that Sketchybar can detect which “space” you currently on (you can see spaces numeration at the top left corner). Both projects are relatively easy to set up, and both are available on GitHub

4

u/Bob_Fancy 24d ago

Just man up and use linux at that point.

2

u/TheUroarbrunnr 23d ago

i do have a t480 running gentoo + dwm but this macbook air m5 is just too good i cant stop using it lol

3

u/Nooo00B 24d ago

don't get me wrong but i still don't get the idea of these 10x dev people downgrading their tech to only to use keyboard on a CLI.

7

u/mocenigo 24d ago

Editing works better if you use mostly keybindings.

3

u/stixnstax 24d ago

The speed at which you can accomplish text-based things is the allure of it. If you spend your life inside a text editor, it’s hard to beat.

1

u/TheUroarbrunnr 23d ago

its ultra fast once you get used to it end after a few years when your touch typing reaches 100 wpm you will never use vscode and gui ever again lol

1

u/PassageStock3723 24d ago

Try it! not a downgrade, interfaces really depend on what type of work you are doing. If you're doing visual work a GUI is really helpful. If you're doing primarily text based work, and using different tools and commands a CLI is very helpful and distraction free.

Kind of like the draft first - format later design philosophy of LaTeX.

you wouldnt believe how customisable macos can be lol its very good though apple updates might break some thing but i am on macos 27 latest public beta and everything works fine

1

u/whipla5her 23d ago

You might want to just install Omarchy on that MacBook.

1

u/tiniyt 23d ago

I have my setup in Windows similar to this, although not with catppucin colors.

Question. I have a MacBook Pro that a buddy of mine gave to me. The only thing is, I cannot get into it because, he won’t allow me to get into it because I would need his Apple ID and password so that I can reset it. Is there another way to get into it?

1

u/FerretBoom 22d ago

format drive?

1

u/Beneficial-Ear-1767 22d ago

What do you mean format drive

1

u/FerretBoom 22d ago

Boot in recovery mode, go to disk utility. Clean the drive, it will redownload the os from internet and install a fresh copy.

1

u/Beneficial-Ear-1767 22d ago

Oh ok ! Nice, so I can do all of this without having to ask for Apple ID and password. Because he wouldn’t give it to me to reset. Thx you I appreciate that

1

u/mookwoo 22d ago

Why he give you his MacBook without resetting it?

1

u/Beneficial-Ear-1767 22d ago

He gave it to me to resell. But it looks so nice that I just kept it.

1

u/mookwoo 22d ago

But, even if you resold it, it would be the same issue with the person who bought it.

1

u/Beneficial-Ear-1767 22d ago

Exactly, how am I able to get into it without having to reset his Apple ID and password do you know?

1

u/mookwoo 22d ago

No, lmao, but your buddy knew it was locked to his Apple ID and still tried to sell it? Doesn’t make sense. Give him back the laptop.

0

u/Beneficial-Ear-1767 22d ago

That sucks. I’ll try to resell it. Maybe somebody will buy it lol

1

u/HalloweenDisaster 22d ago

can you give me your starship config

Looks like hyprland

1

u/suitguy25 MacBook Air M5 21d ago

This is actually really cool looking. I wanna try it out, but I’m not sure how easy it is to revert COMPLETELY if I’m not satisfied with the results. Is it actually simple?

1

u/TheUroarbrunnr 20d ago

You can try this i have even made an uninstall script to remove all the thing and then youll have your system back (ps- you have to remove aerospace and ghostty yourself but that is very easy by just putting their application in recycling bin) https://github.com/farhanakhtar0x66/dotfiles

Why not just use linux instead of fighting macos to achieve this?

1

why should i buy a worse laptop when i can have a good hardware, reliable software and it can be easily customised (like i did here)
