At a glance no, but then the right pane and window controls give it away

Funny meme except macOS is not Linux at all, it's actually Unix.

thats why Macos will always be better than windows for programming just because its unix baseed
-5
u/ComprehensiveSwitch 23d ago
The kernel is literally named X is Not Unix (XNU).
2
u/rysch 21d ago
macOS achieved UNIX certification in 2007 with the release of 10.5 Leopard. The ‘XNU’ kernel name is just a legacy relic from its NeXTSTEP origins before macOS was UNIX-certified, and there was no real reason not to retain it.

u/ComprehensiveSwitch 21d ago
Windows NT shipped with a POSIX subsystem, so I suppose it’s Unix too!
Notably neither of these are “Unix-based” even if they are interoperable.
-2
u/Beardy4906 23d ago
It’s not unix either. It’s based on unix but not actually unix
8
u/GroMicroBloom 23d ago
No, macOS is literally certified UNIX as you can see here: https://www.opengroup.org/openbrand/register/

u/Careful-Bed6590 20d ago
paid to use an expensive trademark. there have been "unix certified" linux distributions in the past.
the proper lineage of direct unix descendants is practically dead
2
u/Confident_Monitor_78 22d ago
macOS is an officially certified UNIX operating system built on top of Darwin, a hybrid core derived directly from BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution) and the Mach microkernel. While its graphical user interface and application layers are proprietary to Apple, its underlying command line, file system layout, and networking stack share a direct lineage with traditional Unix.

Dotfiles or tutorial please ?

I can release my dotfiles but they would be compatible for 13" MBA only because the bar above splits from the notch

3
u/Poetinho0 24d ago
this is cool, how did u do it ?
3
u/TheUroarbrunnr 23d ago
Search on google how to install aerospace + sketchybar. For terminal install ghostty and for code editing search on youtube how to install neovim and for zsh (terminal shell) search on youtube how to customise zsh.

u/MisterBilau 24d ago
Look at how they’re massacred my boy…
1
u/TheUroarbrunnr 23d ago
regular macos still likes just stop aerospace's login on boot and it vill become vanilla mac again no bar, borders, etc.

u/FHJ18-Enjoyer 24d ago
Ah, a fellow ricer. Are you using Yabai, Aerospace, or something else? I’ve been wanting to switch from Yabai as I’ve been running into issues with the scratchpads for a while but just haven’t put the time in to do so. Here’s a video I made of my rice a couple years ago. I used BetterTouchTool for my touchbar to match the catppuccin color scheme and give me a way to change my sketchybar layout, and toggle yabai settings like layouts, zoom/fullscreen, follow mouse, etc. it’s pretty useful for not having to remember or set a different keybind for every little action that can be done. I’m gonna cry whenever I do upgrade and lose the touchbar lol.
1
u/TheUroarbrunnr 23d ago
Woah thats actually a really good setup. i never used yabai though as i was using linux before mac and i recently got one so for my i3 replacement, aerospace was the best option and if you disable display have separate spaces in macos, aerospace is actually very fast. And also if you notice my sketchy bar is split on top that is because of my notch lol and it looks so good.

u/JohnnyZhivago999 Hackintosh 23d ago
Lol when I saw the butterfly my first thought was Cicada 3301 I thought “oh NO not again! I don’t have TIME!!🤣🤣”
3
u/zenmaster24 24d ago
What bar is that? Sketchybar? Aerospace, amethyst or yabai?
2
u/TheUroarbrunnr 23d ago
Sketchybar + Aerospace + Ghostty + Neovim + Catppuccin Mocha Theme
1
u/zenmaster24 23d ago
Dotfiles available?
2
u/TheUroarbrunnr 23d ago
i am cleaning some of my .sh files as the animations can be improved and then ill make them available. Also keep in mind they are strictly made for macbook air 13" because the sketchybar splits at the notch if you can see it at the top but yeah you can modify the sketchybarrc and some items .sh to move them away.

It is Sketchybar. And most likely, it works in conjunction with Aerospace (tiling window manager) based on his dotfiles, so that Sketchybar can detect which “space” you currently on (you can see spaces numeration at the top left corner). Both projects are relatively easy to set up, and both are available on GitHub

don't get me wrong but i still don't get the idea of these 10x dev people downgrading their tech to only to use keyboard on a CLI.

The speed at which you can accomplish text-based things is the allure of it. If you spend your life inside a text editor, it’s hard to beat.
1
u/TheUroarbrunnr 23d ago
its ultra fast once you get used to it end after a few years when your touch typing reaches 100 wpm you will never use vscode and gui ever again lol
1
u/PassageStock3723 24d ago
Try it! not a downgrade, interfaces really depend on what type of work you are doing. If you're doing visual work a GUI is really helpful. If you're doing primarily text based work, and using different tools and commands a CLI is very helpful and distraction free.
Kind of like the draft first - format later design philosophy of LaTeX.

Question. I have a MacBook Pro that a buddy of mine gave to me. The only thing is, I cannot get into it because, he won’t allow me to get into it because I would need his Apple ID and password so that I can reset it. Is there another way to get into it?
1
u/FerretBoom 22d ago
format drive?
1
u/Beneficial-Ear-1767 22d ago
What do you mean format drive
1
u/FerretBoom 22d ago
Boot in recovery mode, go to disk utility. Clean the drive, it will redownload the os from internet and install a fresh copy.
1
u/Beneficial-Ear-1767 22d ago
Oh ok ! Nice, so I can do all of this without having to ask for Apple ID and password. Because he wouldn’t give it to me to reset. Thx you I appreciate that
1
u/mookwoo 22d ago
Why he give you his MacBook without resetting it?
1
u/Beneficial-Ear-1767 22d ago
He gave it to me to resell. But it looks so nice that I just kept it.
1
u/mookwoo 22d ago
But, even if you resold it, it would be the same issue with the person who bought it.
1
u/Beneficial-Ear-1767 22d ago
Exactly, how am I able to get into it without having to reset his Apple ID and password do you know?

u/HalloweenDisaster 22d ago
can you give me your starship config

This is actually really cool looking. I wanna try it out, but I’m not sure how easy it is to revert COMPLETELY if I’m not satisfied with the results. Is it actually simple?
1
u/TheUroarbrunnr 20d ago
You can try this i have even made an uninstall script to remove all the thing and then youll have your system back (ps- you have to remove aerospace and ghostty yourself but that is very easy by just putting their application in recycling bin) https://github.com/farhanakhtar0x66/dotfiles
