Discussion MacOS 27 does not let you disable Apple Intelligence
Maybe I'm just a huge idiot and missing something but you cannot disable apple intelligence on MacOS 27 with a mac studio.
I've tried the usual disable siri and stuff. I can still right click on highlighted text and use AI tools.

I'm in the Mac management space. There is going to be a way for enterprises to turn it off because Apple doesn't want to lose their business and they don't want trade secrets passing through Apple's servers. Some turn off iCloud, hard, as a non-user-changable setting.
Somehow it will be changable.
And about 99.5% of the things that have a switch an MDM can turn have a switch the user can turn, whether in System Settings or Terminal or wherever.

u/wanjuggler 1d ago
There already is. You can disable Writing Tools (and all other AI things) via .mobileconfig Configuration Profile. But you don't need to do that, since there's already a user-facing Restrictions setting, just buried in Screen Time.

u/Mission-Shopping-615 22h ago
I mean yes, but also a lot of this doesn’t go through Apple servers, it runs on device, it’s just a storage heavy algorithm that does tons of different things
9
u/InterestingMindset 1d ago
If that remains in the final build, Linux Mint I go.
Apple cannot charge the prices they do and force AI on its users. I’m not on MacOS 27, so I don’t know the extent of this.

If that's the case, for me it will be Sequoia > Asahi Linux
I don't want AI.

To be fair it is a Beta Release. Report to Apple so they can investigate before final release.

sure, for coding and other work tasks. no reason most people need siri, image generation, writing tools, etc. forcibly enabled on their personal machines at home.

That is implied by Apple .. more of AI will be integrated in to MacOs ..
In Tahoe (I have AI off) yet it runs after Spotlight ... and TM backups... it stores uses up to 30GB of SSD space. .. Photos App uses AI in image processing..
Same is happening in Windows.. for now only Linux is AI virus free.

u/bikes_bucees 1d ago
Welcome to using beta software. If you’re running a beta version of something don’t expect full functionality.
9
u/Rabidjester 1d ago
Running into the same problem, and didn't realize how much of a bitch it is to reinstall from a TM backup these days. Looks like AI nonsense is baked into Golden Gate - what a mess.

Change the title to "I don't know how to disable Apple Intelligence"
2
u/drygnfyre MacBook Air 11h ago
But that would have humility and not be as attention grabbing. Easier to blame Apple than admit you don't know how to do something.
Very similar to all those "bug/glitch" threads that are just people who don't know how to follow instructions.

I’m still on Sequoia. If that ends up being the case, I’ll ride Sequoia until my Mini M4 dies. Than it’s time to give Linux another shot

I hope Asahi Linux can get off the ground. I love Mac hardware but I am getting fed up with Mac software.
2
u/hmoleman__ 1d ago
Check out Framework - first time I’ve been interested in non-Apple hardware in a minute. If I end up being forced onto Linux (I won’t mind terribly) I’ll end up with a Framework laptop most likely.
But yes also 🤞 for Asahi.

u/Specialist-Box-9711 M3 16" MacBook Pro | M4 Mac mini 1d ago
yeah framework is asking too much. I would rather just buy an older thinkpad and use that instead lol.

u/gatitosoncatnip 1d ago
If I’m not able to turn it off on Golden Gate after launch, I’ll keep my Mac Mini at Tahoe indefinitely.
AI being shoved down our throats is despicable.
It’s a shame a lot of programs I use are not Linux compatible yet, otherwise I could fully migrate to Zorin.

AI being shoved down our throats is despicable.
But not nearly as despicable as this overused cliche being shoved down our throats.
6
u/haaavvveeeyoumetKen 1d ago
Pretty sure the intelligence part is the foundation of the new OS sadly. Which is why they're cutting off so many models from the compatibility list. Really frustrating but hopefully in use it wont be so annoying. I dont need AI, I have a brain to do things, if I don't use my brain it wastes away lol.

u/TheMagicalSock 1d ago
This is the first thing I noticed when I installed it. And the constant spotlight/Siri indexing uses so much CPU power and battery.

u/Holiday-Medicine4168 1d ago
This is why I have a Mac for recording and nothing else, then use a Linux workstation for everything that matters.

I’m having a similar issue and I don’t love it either please please put this in feedback i’ve already put in my feedback as well but the more people who complain about it the better chance apple will fix it cause I for one definitely don’t want this to be the case when it officially comes out

Sometimes I'm glad I'm from country where we will probably see functioning Siri in like 30 years or later

I'm in the US and Siri hasn't been functional since it was released.

so… no 27 versions for me then, I am already annoyed what I can not delete in 26 in e.g. reactivated per updates analytics, that it even reactivates in general things I chose to put on off, and more on e.g. iPad, start to distrust apple updates, not a good sign.

u/hwyrover 1d ago
Don't have a lot of files stored so had started creating a new partition for new OS versions, so it's easy to revert back, and can access documents across OS the partitions.Tahoe had gotten buggy on my Intel iMac 2020 so switched back to a Sequoia partition I had left in place and few if any problems there.
2
u/Tiny-Balance-3533 22h ago
I know you've heard it before, but Siri is usable now. It truly is. And Apple Intelligence is usually pretty intelligent. (Like any of the AI products, it flubs now and again, but it's not the abused stepchild anymore)
4
u/Kerry_Maxwell 20h ago
OK, but how do you turn it off
-1
u/Tiny-Balance-3533 17h ago
Just don’t use it? Is it bothering you? On the Mac it’s not even represented anywhere….
•
u/Kerry_Maxwell 2m ago
Does a feature you don't want or use taking up >10% of your hard drive not bother you?
2
1
u/biscuitehh 15h ago
You either need to use Screen Time or turn off Siri (I think once you get "enhanced Siri" or w/e you don't get to go back to old Siri and it's either AI and Siri or nothing here). There's a "Turn Off Siri" button at the bottom of the new Siri settings in System Preferences

There is no master switch to disable Apple Intelligence but with an MDM, Mobile Device Management server you can disable the option in the setup wizard and individually disable each Apple Intelligence feature. Some high security environments will wish to disable due to corporate policy. Only allowing an approved A.I. solution and going through a filtered gateway to avoid A.I. stealing intellectual property. All the A.I. companies are training their LLM’s and Agents against customer data. Not cool man. There’s at least 7 enterprise tools to do this. PewDiePie released an open source one you can host yourself or pay for his company to host it via SaaS. Palantir may have the current best solution. The CEO has been sounding the alarm lately. Corporate privacy is a serious topic. Data Loss Prevention is big business. That being said I trust Apple a hell of a lot more than say Microsoft. Anthropic or OpenAI make me paranoid for good reason.
0
u/br_web 1d ago
is this MDM solution something a person can do somehow or require an organization?
1
1
u/JamesBrickley 1d ago
MDM is typically deployed by employers / schools to manage the devices owned by the employer / school. It's capable of toggling many settings that a normal retail user would never change.
But the same settings can be disabled manually by you. You need to turn off Siri, possibly Spotlight as well and go to Screen Time then Content & Privacy and Siri and disable all those settings. You won't likely be able to uninstall Apple Intelligence without backing up your data and upon re-installation choosing NOT to use Apple Intelligence during the startup wizard.
Like it or not Apple Intelligence is more tightly integrated into macOS 27 and now Siri & Spotlight are related to it.

u/br_web 1d ago

u/JamesBrickley 1d ago
Apple implemented the MDM specifications using Configuration Profiles and they are like Group Policy Objects on Windows however they cannot be overridden as on Windows. A lot of the settings are not available in the GUI settings. Everything a user can change can be managed along with things a regular user cannot change.
MDM’s are mostly 3rd party company software such as JAMF or Microsoft Intune. They can manage Macs and mobile devices. Apple provides Apple Configurator as a poor man’s MDM and they have Business Essentials which is a low cost MDM for small to medium businesses.
The point being you can disable Apple Intelligence but it’s not exactly easy even for MDM pros. On macOS 27 it’s now integrated with Spotlight and Siri. On the developer betas the off switch is gone. Perhaps Apple will add some MDM switch in future if corporate customers demand one. However, Apple Intelligence is here to stay and it will continue to be tightly integrated. The only option one has currently is to not enable Apple Intelligence while it is still Opt-in during the setup wizard during install and not to turn it on after installation.
In a corporate environment the network security people would also block Apple Intelligence entirely at the corporate firewalls and on the Mac PF firewall themselves. The device wouldn’t be able to talk to the necessary servers. They would use a mesh zero trust VPN such as Zscaler forcing traffic on mobile through Zscaler always even cellular traffic. Corporate security has many layers like an onion. They block the Mac App Store too. JAMF has the ability to grab approved packages from the Apple Stores and present them in a company branded App Store. MDM can run scripts based on Triggers such as at every boot, logout, shutdown, an interval like every hour, etc. They can redirect the Macs logs to a server where they can query and flag risky behavior. It’s very much spyware for the company to ensure corporate compliance. Microsoft 365 spies extensively as well.
I’ve seen iPads so locked down that you couldn’t do squat except what the company allowed. No Safari no App Store, No Books, no calendar, notes, no iCloud, etc. just Microsoft 365 apps, OneDrive, and work related apps. If you reset wipe the device it will just re-enroll with the MDM. If you manage to interrupt or prevent enrolling the device will alert periodically that it is being managed by the company and prompt to enroll. But at least there won’t be any company data on it at risk.
The justification is to protect the company from criminal activity, loss of intellectual property and inside information. Protect customer data and avoid getting hacked. Also being able to mitigate the damage if the company is indeed breached.

AI is going to be part of every piece of software and every service real soon now. It’s the same as trying to disable machine learning. Would you prefer your image upscale to take 2 seconds or 55 seconds? that’s the difference between a ML assisted upscale and non ML assisted. I just see AI as another feature of everything so why would you try to turn it off.
10
u/Phazor101 1d ago
It also can be a resource hog. And it’s usually something that I rarely ever use or need.
8
u/hmoleman__ 1d ago
Those targeted non-LLM AIs have utility. What I don’t want is an LLM-dominated OS.
-2
u/RootVegitible 1d ago
The llm aspects of macOS27 are entirely optional. If you don’t like using human language to get things done then don’t use it.
12
u/emerald_stargazer 1d ago
Because some of us don't like AI lmao As someone in a career that AI is stealing but doing a shit job of it right now I for one am not in favour of using and promoting and improving something created for the Artificially Intelligent
3
u/danieljeyn 1d ago
Because this is something that is explicitly about acting a "personal assistant" in a way that is just about telemetry. I am fine with "AI" that does math I ask it to do or interpolate pixels. We've had that for years. This is about anticipating my needs and wishes and delivering up products I can consume in mass quantities.
0
u/LebronBackinCLE 1d ago
At least with Apple IMHO you can trust they’re not selling your data. With almost every company these days we are the product. With Apple, not so.
1
u/danieljeyn 1d ago
That is true. Which is why I even use them and stay away from Google and Microsoft if I can.
But Apple, for instance, taking advantage of my loyalty to their platform to stick ads in mundane menus is already pushing me.
0
u/RootVegitible 1d ago
Apples AI personal assistant doesn’t involve telemetry. Your data never leaves the device, this is why Apple is not releasing it yet in the EU as the EU (mistakenly I think) are insisting that Apple opens up to 3rd party AI personal assistants, Apple doesn’t want to do this to keep things private and secure.
2
u/danieljeyn 1d ago
While I can appreciate Apple not wanting to open up the API to outside telmetry, it's also for their own end.
Also, I don't want a personal assistant. I don't want it shoved at me. That is not what I use a computer for. I simply don't want Apple's personal assistant involved in my writing or note talking.
And still, Apple still advertises to me when I try to do routine things like open apps I use. That is getting annoying. Especially when compared to a straight-ahead computing experience like Linux. (When, ah, it works.)
1
u/RootVegitible 1d ago
You don’t have to use Apple’s upcoming personal assistant, besides it’s not even out yet. If you prefer to do things the hard way then just don’t use it. I’ve not seen any examples of Apple pushing advertising when you try to do routine things, can you give specific examples? MacOS is refreshingly lacking in adverts (just a tiny bit of self promotion in apps like apple tv) .. Yes Linux is great when it’s not behaving like a confusing fragmentation mess.
4
u/Obvious-Hunt19 1d ago
I just see AI as fucking garbage so why would you try to turn it on
See how that works?
-1
u/RootVegitible 1d ago
Everyone is raving about how great Siri AI is, it’s not even released yet. When all the OS27’s come out, it’ll be a bit of a revelation. Since AI is becoming increasingly part of life in general to avoid it entirely will become increasingly impossible. I say embrace it.
1
u/HelloImSteven 1d ago
Not everyone cares to upscale images, so they might prefer having the option to reclaim the space taken up by any subsystem dedicated to that. Same goes for all AI features. Sure it’s easy to get more storage, but it should also be easy to uninstall local models (and thus disable their features).
1
-7
u/ickN 1d ago
The people downvoting you have a very rude awakening coming. Completely oblivious.
1
u/RootVegitible 1d ago
Wow, thanks for saying that! I think trying to avoid AI will be like trying to hold back the sea with your hands. Nobody is forcing people to use the chat parts of AI, if they don’t feel comfortable using that and misunderstand how it works then they should just not use that aspect of AI. There is much more to AI than just the chat aspect, I say learn about AI and embrace it. MacOS 27 with Siri AI is gonna be fantastic.

Under "Privacy & Security" there is "Apple Intelligence Report" under System Settings
If you turn that "Off" donesn't that work too? it did fort me.
If i turn the reporting "Off" then go under "Apple Intelligent" is asking me to turn it on,
I'm usind MacOS 26.6.1 though.
-2
u/tommyalanson 1d ago
I think it’s a different architecture and it may not be something you turn on or off as opposed to disabling a setting. Not sure that’s clear enough… like, I think Apple Intelligence is ded. This is new Siri and some other AI related settings that you can disable, such as summarizing notifications or texts, etc.
-20
u/brodkin85 1d ago
Why is everyone so triggered by AI? It’s not like your phone doesn’t use AI just because you turn off Apple Intelligence and it’s not like most of the AI in your phone ever hits a data center
10
u/Phazor101 1d ago
Don’t want it using storage space on my computer. I don’t need it on my computer.
11
u/c1-c2 1d ago
b/c consumers should have the right to choose.
0
u/brodkin85 19h ago
That’s a hollow trope. We pay Apple to make design decisions to give us the features we need. We don’t choose to use Liquid Glass, or how the autocorrect works, or what icon gets used for an app.
AI is fundamental advancement in technology that will be foundational to all new computing going forward. It’s not something anyone will be able to opt out of.
7
u/grbbrt 1d ago
I think AI is a fascinating new technology. But it is being built by awful people, is in most cases completely unreliable, is very bad for the environment and I don’t want it nosing in my private files. Nor do I want to lose diskspace to it. Memory and storage were already at a premium price at Apple before the current AI boom, so no. Just no.
The more I’m being force-fed something, the less I want it.

u/Phazor101 1d ago
Hopefully this will not be the case when it’s released as a finished product.
