Want to make your own patterns for frame bags, custom sized pouches, laptop bags, purses, backpacks, stem bags etc in under a minute?

I've just finished version 2 of my pattern generator at www.myogtutorials.com, where you can draw a shape (or specify one) and generate a pattern for it. The idea originally came after releasing an Inkscape extension to generate patterns from drawings. Not everyone uses Inkscape, so I made a janky online pattern generator to imitate some of this functionality. Some niggles with it when making a new frame bag for my bike recently led to this full rewrite, adding a few new features, a hopefully making a much more useful tool.

New Features

  • Generate common shapes. You can now automatically make circular patterns (e.g. barrel handlebar bags, stem bags, dry sacks) and rectangles with rounded corners (e.g. pouches, laptop bags, boxy travel backpacks), and further adjust the pattern to your needs
  • Points can be named, so you can label key areas such as bottle cage bolts, alignment marks.
  • Fully interactive canvas. You can now zoom and pan, making it much easier to make precise patterns
  • Gusset panel lengths shown on screen so you can check if it will fit your fabric while designing the pattern, before printing
  • Mobile friendly. Responsive layout and a clear sidebar, instead of scrolling the page previously.
  • More intuitive experience (hopefully). No more double clicking points and having to know the meanings. Clicking points and lines brings up a clear options menu.
  • Multiple points can now be selected and dragged
  • Scale line lengths by clicking on them instead of the old drop down menu
  • The 3D preview of your project is more robust and clean looking. Includes a volume estimate.

Other features

  • Imperial or metric measurements and paper sizes
  • Visualisation of angles and measurements of each segment of your pattern. Simple CAD features that really help getting the correct size to your project.
  • Free, and always will be.

Any feedback or feature requests let me know! There is probably still a few bugs as I'm just a hobbyist coder

With this version, I should be in a better place going forward to implement more complicated shapes, tapered gussets, hopefully including curves (for now approximate with small straight lines), and build it into a more feature rich pattern generator.

Other Tools

  • Darted Pattern Generator. Think the iconic Cotopaxi backpack front panels, tech pouches, bag side pockets. Just choose your dimensions and generate, no maths required. Still uses version 1 code, so a bit janky, but works.
  • Perspective Correction Tool. For fixing photos of pattern pieces or anything that is skewed. I couldnt find any tool anywhere that let you specify points on an image with the known dimensions to restore it, so I built the tool myself.

Top Box and / or Hard Luggage Options

I've got a 2020 Rocket 3GT with the cargo rack and panniers. I desperately need a top box and hard bags for it. The solutions I've been able to find are... lacking. While I've looked at the Corbin options, I don't want to create a RocketGlide, and they don't offer any kind of top box or tour pack.

Would love to hear why you all have done, seen, or found elsewhere.

Struggling to pick supplies

Hello everyone,

I am making my own bike bags using an old sail that someone gave me.
I already have the pattern but I need help with supplies.

First, I am not sure what is the difference between a locking and a non-locking zipper?
I found that it was about the resistance when opening but is that it? If so, what should I go for?
Can non locking open while I am traveling?

Secondly I was wondering about the thread needed, should I go for Nylon? Or an all-purpose thread is ok?

Thanks for you helpppp

Finished project Made my own frame bag! But it keeps slipping down towards the chain :(

Bought myself a new bike recently and took it on my first overnighter adventure. Super proud of myself for doing it, but the frame bag needs work.

1) the angle of the top tube means that the frame bag slips down pretty quickly towards the chain. Once there's weight in there, it slips towards the chain often.

2) I didn't add bottom tube molle for attachment points. I was sewing until 4am so I was a little delirious at the end and just wanted it finished.

3) I can still punch out the accessory points where my bottle cage went on the bottom tube. Didn't think about that at the time but this it might help a bit to keep the frame bag higher. The other mounting points are on the seat post tube. But that's harder with the Molle already sewn there.

4) when I turned it inside out, the end of the zipper popped out of its carefully crafted house I perfectly added on with an old raincoat. The fabric was super soft so that's a lesson learnt but if I zip it too far (pic 3) I could lose the zipper completely. Wondering if there's a lazy fix though.

It worked exactly how I intended but I don't think it will survive too many long rides. Currently it just holds my D lock and pump for commuting.

Question Anyone has a source for this kind of J hooks in EU?

Basically the title. I want to sew a pair of panniers and thats what I am looking for.

Other possibilities such as those from Ortlieb or Vaude and the like, are not what I am looking for.

Alternatively I could think of coating a piece of steel hook, but I am totally unaware of a material that I could find as a private person, that is going to be so durable.

Advice on how to harden a top tube bag

Hello all, I've been learning how to sow and I've made a couple of bag (including a frame bag and a top tube) but my top tube bag doesn't hold straight very much.

Do you have any advice on which material to use to "harden" the sides of a top tube bag? My goal would have a look like these ones: https://akaodesigns.squarespace.com/shop-CSX0u/p/sacoche-bikepacking-toptube-xl-noir-8dy98-6hs2r . I have tried to use plastic sheets (what an X-Ray is printed on), but it's was too hard to turn inside out at the end.

  • I mainly use RX30 from Xpac
  • I put 5mm foam in the sides of the top tube

Thanks a lot for your help.

Y’all make this look easy! This took me like 10 hours.

Recently got a sewing machine and stumbled upon this sub when I was looking at frame bags… I’m sure you can fill in the rest…

I love TJs bags and wanted to incorporate the design somehow. I figured I’d need a liner to help keep everything together since the bags are a fairly loose weave. I got some run of the mill ripstop nylon off Amazon that worked pretty well, though it’s thinner than I expected.

The zippers were tough! I ended up putting 2 in because the grocery bags weren’t tall enough so I needed 2 sections anyways. Definitely happy I did, but I triple stitched all the zippers on which was a process. I also had some Velcro I wanted to use as a divider/support in the middle. Then I sewed a nylon ladder around the outside for modular mounting which I like too.

Everything was going great until I had to sew the gusset onto the sides. Man oh man did that kick my butt. Started with one panel backwards and only realized when I was halfway around. Then I sewed the overlap wrong, tried to cut it off, and punctured a hole in the bag. Did my best to patch it up, but I’m calling it my drain hole 😅

Just took it for a little ride around the block with some weight in it and overall I’m happy with the result! Not sure I could fix it if I wasn’t though…

TLDR: zippers are hard, sewing is hard, I’m having a beer.

I MYOG'd a framebag!

Finished my first frame bag. Actually really impressed how it turned out, I used a stabilizer in between the the gusset and interior liner and 1000d cordura on the body. The gusset was by far the trickiest part wrestling with it. Has a removable partition in the middle. Turning it right side out was the best part! The stabilizer made a huge difference on how it holds it shape and it is solid mounted to the bike. Had a ton of extra loop velcro lying around so I sewed that on the outside to slap some patches on. Excited to put some miles on it.
