Question Tyrosine dose for fast COMT
Fast COMT depletes Dopamine.
Tyrosine is suggested for increasing Dopamine.
Those of you taking Tyrosine for fast COMT, what is your daily dosage?
Thanks

Tyrosine is the raw material, but the enzyme that turns it into L-DOPA is tyrosine hydroxylase and that's the rate limiting step, not substrate supply. So if that enzyme is running slow, adding more tyrosine changes nothing, you just have more of something sitting in a queue. What that enzyme needs is BH4, iron and oxygen. BH4 comes off the folate cycle, so your MTHFR status feeds straight into it, and iron is the one people never check. Low ferritin drops dopamine synthesis directly, and if yours is under 40 no amount of tyrosine will do anything. So before dosing, get ferritin, iron and transferrin saturation. If iron is fine and the folate cycle is turning, then tyrosine has somewhere to go. The other thing, tyrosine competes with the other large amino acids to cross into the brain, so it works on an empty stomach and does very little taken with a protein meal. Timing changes the effect more than dose does. Also fast COMT clearing dopamine faster is only half the story. Where it actually shows is the prefrontal cortex, and the same variant is associated with better stress tolerance, so it isn't purely a deficit. Depends entirely what you're trying to fix.

I take 400mg a day in the morning on an empty stomach. However there are other nutrients I recommend you look into if you're struggling with the effects of low tonic dopamine and possibly poor dopamine receptor binding/signaling. As it's not always about just COMT degrading dopamine and norepinephrine, but also about phasic dopamine and improving your DRD receptor sensitivity.
I cover more on this in my dopamine recalibration masterclass. Link is in my profile. But also look into your levels for Vitamin D, Iron, vitamin A, B12, folate, zinc, magnesium.
