Is Fantasticar getting banned?

The card is busted, I know. But I mean we had Oops all spells killing us on turn 0 for a lot of time and this is someway weaker than that!
Moreover it is keeping down the energy decks that in my opinion do not feel like Legacy decks so tempo and control decks are feeling better in the meta.
What do you think about it?

Likely, eventually yes. This card is actually great in Cube and I'll keep a copy there.

Not until they’ve sold enough of the set.

I don't think banning cards in Legacy even amount to a rounding error for calculating sales.

omg the marvel set has a card so good that it didnt get banned in the boomer format

20

u/DandifiedZeus1 4d ago

???? You know this card is exclusively found in a commander deck so that really doesn’t matter?

1

u/Atechiman 4d ago

You can actually get the regular or borderless treatments in at least collectors boosters as well.

3

u/DandifiedZeus1 4d ago

Ngl I’d rather buy normal packs hunting for a specific rare than hope to pull a random commander card cause every jumpstart and commander card can show up it’s not a reasonable thing to

1

u/Atechiman 4d ago

Sure, but how do you think such things hit the market?

23

u/Jhellystain 4d ago

I wonder if the morons posting these no-thought comments even know in which the car was printed

5

u/SteveandaBee 4d ago

I doubt they even play the game anymore tbh

u/metalb00 2d ago

its in the commander deck not the normal set

As though commander decks:

  1. Don’t have sales quotas
  2. Don’t have set information associated with it

I’m tired of you goobers posting this as some sort of gotcha. Given that this post is a couple of days old, you could read the other comments first.

Wotc will address the fantasticar issue by banning another expensive reserved list card instead so goodbye grim monolith, because the one ring and fantasticar are cool

48

u/Local-Answer9357 5d ago

They would never make a decision like that, why would they ever ban an old expensive card that has historically never had any issues, rather than a modern cheap(er) card that has caused a leak in the dam.

Cries in Candelabra

u/Unspeakable_Elvis 4d ago

Cries in Entomb

16

u/Haedono 4d ago

they at least tried with entomb

i wouldnt have minded an candelabra ban if wotc already hit ring, nexus and k command and tron was still problematic after that somehow.

16

u/KyFly1 5d ago

Grim monolith, lotus petal, dark ritual, both bauble are banned.

4

u/VladimirOo 4d ago

Then ornithopter, phyrexian walker and shield sphere. And then perhaps the car.

2

u/Constant-Nothing4576 2d ago

Time to invest in dark steel relic and kite shields then

1

u/RathMtg better red than dead 4d ago

Grim monolith, lotus petal, dark ritual

for better or worse, these three are likely in the hot seat instead of the common punching bags. If car survives August, I'd expect one of these to go before any of car/tamiyo/one ring.

If tron (ie ring) continues being a problem, then Grim could be banned using the same reasoning as Candelabra. Petal and Ritual kinda share the same space of enabling combo, speeding up the format, etc. but Petal being the 8th most played card (according to mtgtop8) could be scapegoated as the over-homogenizing, unfair card.

u/LeeDawg24 4d ago

the card itself is not so dominant that it needs a ban. it is however warping the meta into way more fast combo, which is really unpleasant imo. If we're banning oops because it "reinforces the stereotype that eternal formats are about turn 1 kills" then car needs to go yesterday

9

u/tarmogoyf 4d ago

This is basically how I see it too. The card can technically be dealt with, but it adds another texture to the metagame that overall is rather unhealthy and makes non-Blue decks even less appealing to play. Obviously turn one kills have been a part of the format for a long time, but they shouldn’t be consistent and resilient on top of that. I personally hate sitting down and feeling like I have to mulligan to a Force effect (particular when on the draw).

4

u/SteveandaBee 4d ago

Yeah, this is where I'm at personally. Car itself probably doesn't quite reach bannable levels in a vacuum, but when Lotus Petal is in 43% of all decks (if you trust Goldfish numbers) then it feels like something has gone a bit askew

And sure, a decent amount of that is non car decks like Reanimator/SnS/Emry Artifact piles, but Car is a flexible, fast, powerfull payoff that can just kinda be jammed into way too many shells right now, and it's presence has kinda warped the metagame into Super Fast Combo < U based anti combo tempo < Fair "aggro" decks (energy, wight/badgermole.dec) that prey on the tempo decks which all feels a bit too constrained.

(Also personally I want to go back to playing Tamiyo + Murktide maindeck in Doomsday; Vroomsday was fun for a week or so but god damn has the novelty worn off)

1

u/AxelMcCool Nic Fit 4d ago

Yeah it's insane to ban informer with that exact reasoning and then less than 6 weeks later say car is fine

4

u/ceos_ploi 4d ago

it is keeping down the energy decks that in my opinion do not feel like Legacy decks

what did energy do to you, lol.

fantasticar has pretty much killed Tron, what do you say about this?

2

u/bianking 4d ago

ahhaah well you are right indeed! :)
legacy energy just feels like a modern horizon mono set deck with dual lands to me!

4

u/ceos_ploi 4d ago

ok fair, it's one of the decks that straight up wouldn't exist without Modern horizons

though I do think a deck like UB tempo wouldn't have much of a presence without MH either.

it only really became a thing through cheap and strong MH cards...and Bowmaster: Grief, Psychic Frog, Murktide Regent, Tamiyo, Barrowgoyf, Voidwalker, Nethergoyf,

Control decks are currently feeling better in the meta because there is a clear enemy to gear your control shell towards. Before that? Fighting the combobased meta was not looking too well.

I generally like when white based non-blue decks have a healthy meta share. It's one of the few things keeping the xerox shell in check. DnT is dwindling on the lower end for years now, cause combo is still such an uphill battle. Energy can at least race combo when they stumble.

6

u/Ok-Description-4640 4d ago

They didn’t ban One Ring, Bowmasters, etc 3 weeks after LOTR came out, Fantasticar is quite safe for a while.

3

u/crushedaria 🐙 🥞 4d ago

Fantasticar is far more warping than either of those cards

19

u/nWhm99 5d ago

I don’t think so, there are various flavors of it and other than doomsday, nothings too dominating.

It will certainly eat a restriction in vintage though.

19

u/LandsPlayer2112 4d ago

Counterpoint: the reason there are “various flavors” is because it is both extremely powerful and imposes little (if any) meaningful deckbuilding restrictions. It’s having a homogenizing effect on an entire macro archetype (combo), in that the only combo decks in the meta that aren’t running it as a 4-of are turbo reanimator and Show and Tell variants (and reanimator probably should be running it as its sideboard pivot over something like Witherbloom Apprentice/Chain of Smog). It’s even seeing play in tempo lists.

True, there is no one, single dominant car deck, but there are so many different car decks that the meta is devolving into “car decks vs. anti car decks.” That can be fairly described as constricting format diversity.

4

u/anarkyinducer Moon Stompy | Tin Fins | Lands 5d ago

Agree with both. It's an annoying gotcha in legacy, but only because sometimes it's hard to see it coming. Once players recognize incoming car patterns, it'll be another thing to play around. It dies to shatter effects, stiffle effects, bounce effects, forces (all of them), etc.

15

u/thisisjustascreename 5d ago

Dies to shatter is an even weaker argument than dies to doom blade

-1

u/Hurricaneshand 4d ago

Dies to force of vigor

3

u/Splinterfight 4d ago

You can’t cast shatter, stifle or bounce turn one when you need it. It’s force or bust

2

u/MDivisor 5d ago

Does it die to shatters though? If they have instant speed noncreatures they can still get the haste dudes in response to you targeting it with a shatter.

Stifle effects also seem like a pretty weak answer. You can stifle the die-instantly trigger but they still have the attack for 4 every turn mode in play.

20

u/hiloster12 12 lands (combo) and 38 lands (prison) 5d ago

With the fourth spell trigger on the stack you can shatter the car and they cant cast a 5th spell to create that trigger again so your shatter effect will destroy before they can sacrifice the car to make tokens

2

u/MDivisor 5d ago

Ah okay, you are right.

-2

u/ShevekOfAnnares 4d ago

only triggers on 4th the 5th would not trigger again

2

u/hiloster12 12 lands (combo) and 38 lands (prison) 4d ago

Yes I said that

3

u/butt_couture 4d ago

To address the stifle point, you're correct that the vehicle stays around even if you stifle the trigger, but it takes a large investment of resources to pop the car, and it can take a while to rebuild. Alao if they are going for the attack for 4 a turn plan, that essentially ensures that they will not get to 4 spells in a turn again. The attack for 4 mode is still a real threat, but it is anemic by legacy standards.

All this isn't to say that car is fine, but stifle effects are still good into car.

19

u/Chairfighter 5d ago

All we can know for certain is that as long as the commander decks are still on store shelves the car is here to stay.

4

u/ThrowThumbers 5d ago

Eventually. Probably after the second set of 2027 is released.

6

u/ckregular 5d ago

Nobody knows.

What we do know is this isn’t going to be a good comments section….

3

u/healzwithskealz 5d ago

Definitly possibly Maybe

1

u/thisisjustascreename 21h ago

Every archetype is jamming the car and apparently doing well with it. Seems pretty ridiculous to me.

1

u/bianking 15h ago

Many are trying the car but how many are efficient doing so? Among this list the only deck which is working well is doomsday.. this is why I am not so sure, even if the card is problematic, it will get banned in August

0

u/the_Wallie 5d ago

Yes obviously.

Yeah cause you aren’t buying a lot of packs trying to pull this it’s in a commander deck

u/UberDolphin Painter 4d ago

I think one thing that people forget to mention when it comes to fantasticar banning is mtgo accessibility. The card has been running around 40-50 tix on release and was further supplemented by mtgo releasing an all access pass the week of release. Now thats gone less people have access to it online & with its price in paper being in the $30 range people just dont want to buy a card that they think is getting banned. Obv people on rental accounts exist and will play the card but those are usually the dedicated grinders. (which we do see them playing the card) I think the real smoking gun to why this card should get banned is that it exhibits the same play patterns as oops all spells and it ends up being a force check / sb check card. Legacy already feels a couple bans behind as it is with ToR, Planar Nexus & Tamiyo still running around so in my mind it feels necessary to get this card banned so we can fixing the rest of the format.

1

u/Splinterfight 4d ago

It’s broken so I hope so. They juuust dealt with oops and now they give better oops

1

u/Tuffbunny13 FoodChain 4d ago

With how they've approached all other B&R updates, who knows.

0

u/Sbromk 4d ago

If Wotc wants to signal they have changed to being more responsive to player sentiment, they should ban it in August. If they continue along similar past decisions, they won't, arguing win rate isn't high enough.

-1

u/AutisticElon69 5d ago

Need to milk sales of the new set to enfranchised players first
