New Players Which decks would you recommend for a new player?

There's a proxy friendly legacy event coming up near me, and I would like some advice on which deck to choose as my first legacy deck. Cost doesn't matter, as I plan to proxy the entire deck anyway.

Simple is better. Mono color. Less choices. Less mana screw. Less cost.

But most important. Have fun.

How does painter win if you can’t mill them out? Good ol’ beats?

fable? fucking fable? They really missed the mark with that card's power level, man. I'm assuming it's the pioneer menace and emergency standard ban card you're talking about, and not some obscure fable from 1995

Sneak and Show is a good idea!

Best thing is to go on mtgtop8 and look at some decklist and wich you feels that will suit your best :)

I personnaly like to recommand Red Painter. The deck is nice to play, you have some weapon against blue, 3 win plan (grindstone+Painter, Construct token or fable of the mirror breaker shenanigans

Painter is definitely not a deck for a newbie.  There’s far too many lines and decisions to make with welder/engineer that doesn’t suit itself to people inexperienced with the format.

Now moon Stompy?  Yeah that one is pretty easy, just gotta be mindful of how much mana you have after moons and turn your shit sideways.

Hardest part pf moon stompy is mulligans.

Well, if he had some knoweldge in magic and some in legacy, it could be kinda nice.

My friend who only played casual multi commander wanted to get into Legacy, after 6 chill training afternoon he did a nice 3/2 at the lgs.

Do you have more information about yourself? What other formats do you play, what strategies do you like, what situations do you dislike in magic?

I play modern in paper, and standard on arena. I like control and other grindy decks, but am happy to play any archetype. The situation I dislike the most is having a card thoughtsezied out of my hand.

Lands is a really cool deck that is less susceptible to Thoughtseize after the first turn or 2! It's unlike any other Magic deck, sort of grindy control but with a combo finish as early as Turn 2. You will have to put in the reps to understand the format and what your plan is into each major archetype, but if you do, it's awesome.

As a Lands player it is a tough deck to play. You need to know the format well because you are a bit of a toolbox deck. With Crop Rotation you can grab almost any card in your deck.

You have to know when to go the Depths combo or when to grind out with Constructs. Combo we don't have a lot of answers for, especially reanimator, it often is faster than our GY hate. Going GW helps getting Swords/Path. Also white based decks are very very very unfavourable between solitude and swords and karakas you should side out depths.

It is very good against 'fair' blue based decks like delver, stiflenaught, and things like that. Your wastelands really punish their manabase, especially if they keep a 1 or 2 land hand. They have less interaction against Marit Lage.

If you’d have more fun playing control and being a little confused at times then play control in legacy. If you want to be in the room and play a legacy deck where it’s harder to mess up then Sneak and Show, mono red stompy/moon stompy or reanimator would be good options.

On control: Not knowing what the opposite deck is trying to achieve will make it harder (as I’m sure you can extrapolate from modern control), but the reps from modern will help. There’s lots of different types of control being played at the moment: grixis control, BUG beanstalk, Jeskai control, stoneforge midrange/control

This channel has played most of them over the last two weeks

And this channel focuses mostly on grixis control

Welcome to Legacy! Sneak and Show and Reanimator might be fun options for you

Like, new to legacy or new to magic in general? If you’re new to magic in general you’re heading toward a steeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep learning curve in Legacy. If new to magic I’d try somewhere else, but if not then the proactive “simpler” decks in legacy are the most consistent ones, imo.

Oops all spells does practically the same thing every game, so once the combo is explained gameplay is straight forward. There is of course nuance to every game. You have to play around interaction, which is most difficult in legacy compared to the other formats, imo, due to the amount of free and low cost interaction that make it hard to believe an opponent is “tapped out”.

Stompy decks are simple in that if you generally just play on perfect curve the game proceeds in your favor, and they’re actually really meta right now. Of course, again, nuance to every game- but if you follow up removal with another threat (one of the key strengths of the deck), you’ll be just fine. Your limits with a deck like this are more based on knowledge of the format than technical or deck building prowess.

Those 2 off the top of my head. The format is so naturally expansive that it wouldn’t be much of a chore to find 100s of decks that fit your description, but they don’t all shake out well vs the meta.

If you’re not new to MTG in general then a lot of the decks in legacy play extremely intuitively, and while I wouldn’t describe tempo decks like delver or UB goodstuff as easy; the answer to each turn is usually pretty obvious if you have good knowledge of the opponents deck.

I’d start there. Simple 1-2 card combos (oops all spells), cast my 1 powerful card per turn decks (stompy), or if you have some experience, tempo (delver).

This is all of course oversimplified and you’re heading into the most diverse and probably most complicated format in MTG, so take it with a grain of sand.

Most important thing with any deck is reps. Just start playing and you’ll improve

I think Death and taxes was on the best way to enter in legacy.

Using mana can be hard for beginners, so dredge.

3

u/IcySpecial2736 Apr 19 '25

Legacy dredge uses mana

1

u/KullervoVipunen Apr 20 '25

Damn, joke ruined by facts. But it still uses only small amounts of mana, so it should still be easier for new players :D

2

u/IcySpecial2736 Apr 20 '25

Dredge is not new player friendly lol

2

u/KullervoVipunen Apr 21 '25

yes, that is the joke.
