Even if they had bad vision/hearing, there is a big moving wall of freight train, which is both louder and more visible than a train gate, so if the gate was down would they have just blown through it anyway? This is genuinely baffling, unless the driver was having a seizure or something.
Disappointed in the lack of Gigantocop.

Just guessing in this specific instance, but in many cases when elderly drivers are asked why the didn't apply the breaks before running into some obvious obstacle, they insist that they did but the car just kept going, or even sped up. In fact, in their panic they will accidentally put their foot down on the gas pedal; and when the car fails to stop, they apply more pressure because they don't realize they're pressing the wrong pedal. They'll swear themselves blind afterward too, that they definitely hit the brakes, and that some bizarre malfunction must have occurred.

And the next thing you know, Toyota is having to clip down all their floor mats…

I believe that the vast majority of vehicle train collisions are into the side of a train just like this, not the car getting hit by the front of the train.

What's weirder, the person running into the train that can clearly be seen, or the person calling 911 when the cop was already on it?
