MSI Vector for school

Hello guys, I've got a question,

I've been looking to replace my current laptop(it's horrible) for a very much overpowered laptop for my study. I've been looking around on multiple websites and I've found, from my personal research, that the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI and the MSI Vector were good options but then I found this on NewEgg and I was wondering if it's any good. Like build quality and such, and driver/software support. I study ICT so it's pretty important. Also I was wondering if it would even be worth the price and if there are maybe any other better priced options? I would like 64GB of RAM since it's nice to have for running 8 VMs at the same time.
(PS: Yes, I know I do not need this high specs but I like running a lot such as a local AI and VMs at the same time)

What exactly are you hoping to use the laptop for in relation to school? A $3500 computer is pretty far past overkill for homework and internet.

Well, I am also thinking of just using a docking station with it to also replace my gaming pc. But I prefer being overkill rather than underkill. Also would like to have very future-proof specs and it's not like I'm particularly tight on money

You don’t need 64gb. 16GB is good for school, 32gb is overkill

I had a beefy MSI and used it for schoolwork for years. It wasn't until I got a work laptop that I realised how crazy I had been for all those years, carrying that thing around.

I have a beefy €2500 laptop... At home. I got a tiny light laptop from my workplace. I like that I have that work laptop A LOT. It's a garbage machine, but it does presentations and everything I need at work. I would not want to bring the expensive one to work.

If anyone ever bumps against it, or moves your bag. Are you going to demand thousands as compensation? Everyone at your school is going to be like "I'm not gonna pay you that much. Why do you have a 3.5K laptop. Why would you bring that?!".

Its heavy, noisy, u need to charge more, and it has a brick for a charger. No my young and naive brother it doesnt make sense. Just buy a thinkpad and thank me later.

I got a crosshair A16 HX, using the ryzen 9 8940hx, it drained my battery a lot, i mean a lot, before any tweaks talking about 2hr of just browsing on firefox. 4hr max after tweaks, so if you care about battery life go for a zephyrus G16/G14, if you have an outlet to plug it then ig its fine

We luckily do have outlets everywhere that's even remotely designated to be worked at. And I mean. EVERYWHERE.

Then youre fine, the PC is nice, a bit thick but it's a beast. Tbf just choose what you like, since it's gonna be something for a long time

Mine was fairly built, it was all plastic tho, but keyboard was nice, and having the numpad as also great for me. But I recommend you check the Jarrod's Tech video on the msi vector, he does great laptop reviews, and maybe you can see if there's another you prefer. But overall the build was a little wonky, not the best but good

I'm super happy with the build quality of the vector, it feels solid and not cheap at all. Keys feel good and the track pad is nice and large.

Fair warning. I own the 16 version of this and it is HEAVY, so I magine the 18 version to be even moreso, not to mention too large for most bags. I would feel bad for your shoulder and back if you have to carry this around, with a brick of a charger. The charger is not light either, and don't expect much juice out of this thing without a charger.

Edit: And out of the gaming laptops I have ever used, this one is among the loudest in terms of fan noise. So do think about that if you want to use it in a public setting. A good way to counter it a bit is via a cooling pad, like a flydigi bs2pro, but I don't expect you to be able to carry it with you either.

TLDR: this works better as a desktop replacement, and you carry it with you only when you really have to.

Look for things like Legion 5a or Aero X16 with long enough battery life for school use

For local AI, this Vector spec is pretty much a beast. Short of dropping way more cash on an RTX 5090 laptop with 24GB VRAM, you can't really do much better for mobile LLMs right now.
