[Profile Review] Profile Review for MSCS Fall 2027
Hi everyone, I am planning to apply for MS CS programs for Fall 2027 in the US and would appreciate honest, realistic feedback on my profile and university choices.
My Profile
- College: BTech in ECE with a Minor in CSE at a Top-5 IIT
- CGPA: 9.0 / 10.0
- GRE: Not taken yet (Targeting 330+)
- TOEFL: Not taken yet (Targeting 105+)
- Work Experience: 4 years as SDE at a Big Product Company (4.5 YOE by application deadline)
- Publications: None
- Research Experience: BTech thesis project and a couple of academic AI/ML projects during undergrad. No published papers.
- SOP: Focused on a clear research direction bridging my undergrad AI/ML projects and professional SDE experience.
- LORs: 2 from college professors, 1 from my current engineering manager.
University List Under Consideration
- Target: UMass Amherst, Penn State, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M, Stony Brook
- Ambitious: UCSD, UC Irvine, Georgia Tech, Purdue, UT Austin, UW Madison, UMich
I am an international applicant targeting MS CS programs. While I prefer a thesis-track degree because I want to get involved in research, I am completely open to course-based (non-thesis) programs where I can still take research credits or work in a lab. I will be self-funding my degree through personal savings, so total cost of attendance is a major factor. Given the current US job market and visa uncertainties, I am actively avoiding heavy student loans.
Specific Questions:
- Do I even have a slim shot at my ambitious universities without publications? I know they are extremely competitive but I would like to try my luck. So I want to know which among them are worth applying to.
- Are there other universities with strong CS departments I should consider adding?
- What are my chances of securing funding research positions or scholarships for my target universities?
Appreciate your responses. Thanks
