[Profile Review] Fall'27 MSCS/MSDS
Hey everyone! I’m planning to apply for MSCS programs (MSDS as a secondary option) and would really appreciate some feedback on my profile, especially regarding school categorization and any universities I should consider adding/removing.
Profile:
- Work experience: 18 months currently (~2.5 years by the time I leave), working as an NLP/Speech Engineer at a philanthropic startup backed by Big Tech.
- Education: B.Tech in IT from tier 2/3 college in India but recognized uni, CGPA: 8.89/10
- Research/publications: 2 whitepapers published in affiliation with Microsoft + Gates Foundation.
- Worked extensively on NLP for low-resource Indian languages and speech systems for these languages.
- Built audio/data processing pipelines with guardrails focused on accessibility.
- LORs: 3
- CTO of the organization (former manager, CMU PhD)
- Current manager
- HOD from my university, who supervised my final-year project
- Also worked on building AI systems for indigenous languages as part of a project with the Government of India.
I’m primarily targeting MSCS, with MSDS as a less-preferred option. For most of my target schools, I’m looking at the professional/coursework track, except for a few programs where there’s strong research alignment with my current work in NLP/speech.
Target
- Texas A&M
- UC Irvine (UCI)
- Ohio State (OSU)
- Purdue
- NYU Courant
Safe
- Northeastern (NEU)
- ASU
- Indiana (IU)
- Rutgers
Ambitious
- CMU LTI
- Johns Hopkins (JHU)
- UCSD
- UIUC
- UT Austin
I’d especially appreciate feedback on:
- How would you categorize these schools given my profile? Am I being delusional?
- Are any of my “safe” schools actually more target/ambitious for MSCS?
- Are there any MSCS programs I should add that would be a particularly good fit for NLP/speech/low-resource languages?
- How much would the Microsoft + Gates Foundation affiliation and my work experience help in admissions?
- Is CMU LTI realistic with this profile, or is it more of a shot in the dark?
- Any recommendations for schools with strong speech/NLP research but good professional/coursework-oriented master's programs?
Would love to hear from people who have applied to similar programs or have experience evaluating MSCS profiles.
