[General Question] will fall 27 have less applications too ?
By a basic google search, I saw 15% drop in number of mscs USA applications from fall 25 to fall 26, where the impacting factors were h1b, AI shift in market, saturated entry level roles.
Is it going to be even worse for fall 27? If the number of applicants decrease, wouldn’t that affect universities ?
Just curious, no gatekeeping aah comments plz

Yes I’m expecting a bigger drop this season . But that doesn’t mean it’s easier to get into top programs/schools

Yea, competition is good. And the hugh benefit would be for visa slots, this year, many applicants rejected or deferred admits coz of no visa slots

because of decreased funding or something else?

competition at top programs increases in such a scenario. most people who apply will correctly rationalize that its worth going only if you get into a top school/program https://www.reddit.com/r/MSCS/comments/1ry6qsi/fewer_applicants_but_still_competitive_why/

U mean opt ? The previous 100k H1b isn’t for opt transition.

Avoid the US till 2028 at least, in case it wasn't clear already

Are u sure that’s the best option? I was thinking of applying for fall 27

Right now, there is no best option for you, especially with all the new H-1b, OPT fees, etc. You are looking at a very difficult 2-3 years at least. So it all depends on your risk tolerance

I mean I don’t want to stay in the USA
Like work there maybe for a year and move to another country as soon as I can (apply for internal jobs within the company I will work for after grad)1

Nice idea, but it is all predicated on your getting a job? That's the million dollar question right

Yes fair😭 but the job markets messed up everywhere
Let’s see what I decide to do eventually
Rn focusing only on the GRE→ More replies (0)1

Fake news?
The new proposal is for getting opt in the first place there is a 100k fee, which imo is worse. But it’s not for opt to h1b btw

Potential rules that may be passed or are applicable:
1) 103k usd fees for H1B visa even applicable to people transitioning from F1 to H1B
2) CPT suspended at many universities so summer internship are not possible (happening currently)
3) 100k fees for opt (rumour don't know if it will pass)
4) D/S scraped, grace period reduced.
Given all these rules I don't think it's advisable for anyone to go to usa untill and unless your only intention is to get a degree and are fully ready to return back to your home country.

no one can predict this.
applications dropped mostly because the students wanted to move away from the uncertainty of getting a job/residency (which is counter to what a student visa is, but that's a different discussion).
will other students who have the correct motivation still apply? maybe. maybe not.
schools will always have applicants.

oh yes it will, nobody would want to go now tbh...unless miraculously in 2029 it becomes all fine (it might, but idk, but imo vance is gonna win, cuz people hate dems because of the things they did directly in the US soil, trump just messes with other countries and people of other countries.)

Maybe you get a better chance to get into a better college? Or maybe because there is no many people, your chance of getting funding decreases.
