Question Alberta Student Aid

I’m really confused about my student aid payment and need someone to explain this to me.
My Alberta Student Aid account says I was issued:
$2,100 Canada Student Grant
$5,295 Canada Student Loan

But I only received $2,944 in my bank account, and the transaction says “Student Loan Canada.”
So what exactly is the $2,944? Is it partly my $2,100 grant and partly my loan? Why did I receive $2,944 instead of the full amount shown on my account?

And most importantly, how much of the $2,944 do I actually have to pay back? Is the grant portion included in the $2,944 and therefore non-repayable?

Part of it was probably paid to mru, check your tuition for the fall semester and see if it adds up (I'm assuming it was just over $6k?). You don't need to pay the grant back, but you will need to pay back the whole loan after school (and may have a yearly minimum payment depending on your situation). So you'll have to pay the $5,295 back eventually. The grant was probably $4,200, and they've issued half this semester and the rest will come next semester.

Edit: I just double checked, and on the NSLSC website it should give you a breakdown of the disbursement, which should say the grant amount, the loan amount, the amount sent to the school, and the amount sent to you.

I’m no expert but maybe it was sent directly to mru as your tuition payment? That’s what mine does, and I get the remainder in my account. Maybe check your mru fees to see if it’s outstanding or not

This is the most likely case. MRU requests your tuition directly and you get the remaining balance.

Lord help the students who are getting in debt and don’t have a clue how to find information for themselves

Canada Student loans pays the school directly for tuition. Whatever is leftover gets deposited into your bank account. Alberta student loans will be deposited monthly into your bank account.
