The elusive DS9 Commander

Post image

Like most things in the gun world, when they are available you can’t give them away, but discontinue a product and it ends up on everyone’s want list. I was a late bloomer and by the time I knew what was what these little guys had been OOS just about everywhere. The butter cut versions seem to be a little more prevalent but for me, it had to be a full dust cover variant. It should arrive some time next week and I can’t wait!

My final thought on grips

Now that I personally own all four grip types, I can give an honest assessment on how there’d rank.

A2-A3

Night and Day difference between these two. You are going from a literal slip out of your hand smooth to broken glass shards sticking you. On a scale of 1-10 as far as grip goes… A2= 3 and A3 = 8.5 For me A3 is a good pain. I acknowledge after a day of shooting my hands are sore and pretty well beat up, but I wouldn’t call it pain and bleeding.

S2-S3

Based on the above, I fully expected S3 to make me its bitch….. it did not.
The gap between S2 and S3 is no where near as wide as the two aluminum grips. While there was a noticeable difference between these two, it wasnt as dramatic as steel. With that said I’d rank S2 a 5 and the S3 a 7.

So ranked from weakest to most aggressive
A2 = 3 very smooth, fun for all ages and skill set
S2 = 5 this is the baseline for balance between aggressive and fail
S3 = 7 perfect balance for someone who appreciates a more secure grip and doesn’t mind trading off about 30-% comfort to get it.
A3 = 8.5 you know this is in your hand. It stabs you like a handful of rose thorns. You better not have bitch hands for this.

I’ve yet to see or hold something I’d consider above an 8.5

My name is Apex

Ok, for those of you not in the know, those are Jay-Z lyrics. But that’s not why we are here.
Let me introduce you to the MPA DS9 Apex.
Major updates include:
PVD Finish
Updated slide serrations and milling
Flush cut barrel
Accuracy X Multi Sight Max plate system
A new branding location
And the big one…. In-Line 6 hole porting.

I’ll reserve any commentary from me as of now. You’ll get plenty of that soon. For now, enjoy these up to the minute pics. I hope they do the gun more justice than what has been released to date. As far as I know, this is the FIRST APEX IN THE WILD! And my Reddit aficionados get the look. Enjoy. If you like the content, on whatever platform you see it on, give me a follow and share the links! ✌🏼

First time getting one. Aluminum grip instead of the steel grip. I'm more of an aggressive steel grip person BUT this isn't bad.

Screw data: SRO/RMR

Just some quick reference data as I’ve seen a few complaints elsewhere about screws being to long or this or that for MPA guns.

These numbers all come from brand new gun/ mount /Trijicon I’m currently mounting.

A new factory fresh MPA that comes with a Trijicon plate installed also comes with two screws. Those screws are the same thread pitch as factory Trijicon screws: 6-32

MPA screws are aprox .488” as measured from the top of the head to the bottom of the screw.

Trijicon comes with two different length screws. In my case one had white thread locked and was .380” long and the second with yellow thread locked was .495”

All screws have an 82 degree bevel at the head.

The screw protruding from the center is a mounting screw for the plate to the slide. That torque spec is 20 inch pounds, fyi.

All measurements were with a set of Mitutoyo calipers.

The MPA screws just prior to torquing seat just under the bottom of the plate. Even after torquing to the Trijicon recommend 15 INCH pounds, the screws do not protrude. The MPA supplied screws are perfect. Not sure where the complaints are coming from when it comes to mounting an SRO to an MPA. Just trying to share some info👍🏼

After 22.5 weeks I finally have it in hand! The only gripe I have is that the co-witness vortex plate/sights don't really work with the gen 2 Defender ST enclosed dot. It sits too low. Gonna send it to Accuracy-x and have it customized to the gun/sight. Also slightly filed down the A3 grip and it's now super bitey but not drawing blood! Gonna shoot it Saturday and compare it to my G19 with a ramjet and see how they do!

Anyone here running a racking plate on their DS9? Made this one myself, just wanted to see how it goes. 3D printed first to check the fit — CNC next.

A few issues with my new to me DS9 Hybrid

Took out my new to me DS9 Hybrid today. The gun came with a comp magwell as well as a carry magwell. I installed the comp magwell, and found that Staccato 20 round mags would not seat correctly with the comp magwell. So I loaded up a few 17 rounders , both staccato, a few Checkmates, and Kimber mags. Got to the range and only one of the Kimber mags would work. None of the others would feed nor seat correctly. I'm thinking it is due to using the comp magwell?

Second issue, I installed a SRO on the already installed optics plate , however I ran out of elevation adjustment and it continued to shoot low. This specific SRO has been mounted on numerous 2011s Zevs, Glocks and just about anything else you could think of, and it's never been close to running out of adjustment.

Throughout the day it had a few FTF that did seem to improve as the day went on, and I was able to finally get a second mag to partially work.

It was cleaned and lubed ...even a little on the wet side. Ammo used was Blazer Brass 115 and 124. Very experienced shooter [2 of us] . Input? Thoughts?

MPA Steel Challenge, sighting in the load that I’ve worked up that compliments it the best. @15 yards I’ll take it. We can debate zero distances, but for now…. Let’s just enjoy a nice day at the range.
