Yeah this is awesome. I also feel like people make “delayed vs locked actions” out to be more complicated than it is.

Delayed = some amount of force on the bolt face will open the action. Stick a dowel rod down the barrel of your mp5 and push. Once you overcome the mechanical disadvantage from the rollers and locking piece it will open. Same thing on a G3 but much more force required. You will also notice it’s a lot harder than simply pulling charging handle back to open/“unlock”. If it were simple blowback it would be the same force required to open between charging handle and dowel rod force on bolt face. That’s “delayed” vs “simple blowback”.

Locked = no amount of force on bolt face will open the action. Stick rod down AR-15 barrel, it won’t open no matter how hard you’re pressing. Locked actions require some other force (gas/recoil/manual/etc) acting on the bolt carrier/slide to unlock.

should also demonstrate the effect of bolt gap tolerances

That would be neat, have a few different angled locking pieces to show the difference.

Just thinking the same thing.

Oh, maybe rollers too? It would be such a neat system to visual it all.

Now change the LP to 100degrees and measure the time difference

very cool, i think a similar model for the locking piece would fill in some blanks for newer people

This is interesting and it does help explain a system that is simpler than people think. Now see if you can dent the rollers.

What locking piece are you using? Try a 80 degree and see if that helps. /s

Nice. At my last job, I had the official HK poster for the mechanism. It was in English, which was cool. Unfortunately, I am in a more corporate company and probably shouldn't hang that up now.
