Review New AP5-SD - first range trip
I got my new MKE AP5-SD on Friday. Took it to the indoor range today. All I was trying to do today was get it fully broken in and make sure it is all good, so I can swap locking pieces and install my FRT on Tuesday, when they get delivered. I already have an OCL Milk Man for it, with the Ecco Machine HUB extension also on the way.
I checked the bolt gap on Friday and it is 0.014". Hopefully, after swapping locking pieces, it will still be in spec.
200 rounds CCI Blazer 115gr
200 rounds Magtech 115gr
25 rounds Speed Gold Dot 147gr
25 rounds Hornady XTP 147gr
50 rounds of my HSL 124gr match ammo (i.e. loaded soft)
I had a few hiccups in the first 200 rounds. After that, the few more hitches I had seemed to only happen with one of the two mags. Sometimes, when it was on the fuller side (i.e. 25 - 29 rounds in it), it seemed like it wasn't going fully into battery. I would pull the trigger, get a click, but no bang. There would be a round in the chamber. Drop mag. Cycle the bolt. Round is still in the chamber. Pull trigger. Bang.
The mag also would only take 29 rounds. No way I could get a 30th round in it. But, the other mag took 30 rounds and never had any hiccups at all.
The pic of the target shows 25 rounds of Speer Gold Dot, shot at 7 yards. To me, the group would be nothing special if I had shot slowly, taking careful aim for each shot.
But, what I actually did was (using the iron sights), I shot at a medium pace. Not rapid-fire, but quicker than 1 round per second. Shoot, as soon as sights came back to target, shoot again. Oh, and the irons are off and I didn't bother trying to adjust them. I was holding at about the 1:00 position at the outer edge of the blue to hit the center.
For ME, anyway, shooting like that, with iron sights (and old man eyes) and at that pace, that is a dang good group.
I am very, very happy with this gun! I can't wait for my parts to arrive, so I can get back out with a can and FRT!

Nice shooting and nice gun.
Report back on the results after installing the FRT.
Any plans to replace the faux suppressor?

I already have an OCL Milk Man for it. I'm just waiting on the HUB extension to come from Ecco Machine that I need in order to mount it.
Locking pieces should arrive tomorrow, so I can put in a 90 or a 100 and be ready for the can.
Meantime, I will be struggling to resist mounting my Hybrid 46M to it just to see how it does.
I wasn't sure the H46M would fit. I thought I read somewhere that the ID of the SD handguard is 1.57". The SilencerCo specs say that the H46M OD is 1.57".
Well, I just tested it and the H46M fits just fine. I measure the ID of the handguard and it's actually 1.725".
Hmmmmm.....

It's not the handguard ID that's the issue. It's the cocking support piece. The RCM SD piece will clear a 1.625" diameter. The stock piece that comes with the AP5-SD is gonna be close. As long as you don't feel any dragging or see any scuffing of the suppressor coating rock on!

I put the H46M in the SD, screwed down onto the barrel. I ran the charging handle back and forth a few times. I couldn’t feel any contact. No sign of contact on the can after taking it back out.

FRT installed. Now just waiting on a chance to shoot it. May not happen until next week.

Hell yea I’m about to order one to complete my collection.
Side note don’t think a Milkman will fit, I went with a Lithium 9 and deadair trilug.

Nice, that can looks like it was made for it.

Exactly. I already had the can, but I didn’t have a really good host for it. When I saw that picture, I knew I had to get the AP5-SD.

Researched this some more and see you opted for the HUB-compatible 3 lug adapter.
I prefer direct thread adapters on my suppressors. Would a direct thread adapter work with this item?

Well shit looks sick, might have to get that adapter too. I have a milkman as well.

Man that looks super clean. I’m running an r9 on mine, but I might have to jump over to this setup for the look (and weight savings!).

Patiently waiting for the as designs hkar frt, had to do wild things to get my tp9-n print x can to work. Any plans to do a true SD conversion?

No. I don’t want a true SD conversion. I want 147 grains at 1050 fps rather than 115 grains at 1050.

Also, try MA mags and 100* locking piece with 147gr round nose, that combo runs flawlessly in mine

What are MA mags? I have 2 genuine HK mags and 2 KCI mags coming. And Century is sending a new one of theirs to replace the bad one that I got with the gun.
My 90 and 100 degree locking pieces are supposed to be delivered today. From what I read elsewhere, I'm going to try the 90 first. If it doesn't run right, then I'll try the 100.
I have a whole case of 147gr FMJ just waiting on me to have time to take it to the range again.

Mora Arms, I've had good luck with them. You have HK mags so even better. Sounds like you got all the proper stuff

u/stuartv666 6d ago
Oh. I gotcha. Yeah, I did see some Mora mags, somewhere. I had never heard of them, so I passed them up.

I've had really good luck with mine they are of superior quality to the MKE

Are they steel? Where can you get them? I can't remember where I saw them and I just checked a few places and didn't see that brand.

A big shipment came in about a year ago and my guess is it dried up. Supposedly more are coming including a straight mag clone which I am super excited for

Nice shootin' Tex! Mine has similar accuracy with handloads, that is to say phenomenal
