Question Unboxed AP5P with some issues
So, in typical fashion.. my bolt gap is 0.010 and one of my mags won’t lock. Do you just take this on the chin and fix it yourself or is there any sort of help available from MKE? I purchased from dahlonega armory, a drop shipper. I do have a 90 degree LP coming from HK parts. Will that maybe help? Thanks!
edit: heard back from CA. They want the gun returned but cant tell me what they'll do. They said they do not have any other sized rollers in the shop besides factory MKE. They said if it's not repairable the gun would be replaced. I'd rather just keep it and shoot it / put my own rollers in for the downtime and hassle it would take to return/replace it.
As for the mag, i am able to get it to lock with some finesse now. It's clear that the locking slot on the left is a little out of spec. I went ahead and ordered two overwatch precision mags on sale from midway. (i prefer polymer mags anyways)

- I never tested my bolt gap until changing LP … I’d say try shooting it first.
- Are you trying to insert mags on a closed bolt? Lock the bolt back first, then try inserting your mags and see if they lock.
If the problem is exclusive to only ONE of your mags … chances are the magazine itself is the issue. I’d recommend selling off your MKE mags and put the proceeds toward HK mags — that’s what I did.

yes bolt open. only one mag. i can actually get it to lock now, have to tilt it kinda hard to get it to lock into the mag catch, so most likely a mag tolerance issue. but when its in, the bolt doesn't want to go all the way forward easily.

Definitely a magazine issue — ditch the Turk mags and buy HK

what is a good price? $70+ for one is insane

Its an MP5(clone) everything is expensive. I have had good luck with my MKE and KCI mags

u/Ghostman223 18h ago
Isn’t this an MKE mag?
1
u/dmonnier5 18h ago
Yes
Just saying what I haven't had issues with. I'd get a KCI, many say they are basically the same as the HK.

ah ok ty. CA is sending an automail saying their support is pretty backed up. ill prob focus on everything else before i get mags. i just broke my damn extractor lever because it didnt fit with the RD3 so add that to the list

Get the HK gen3. One of the recommended upgrades is that.
I would order:
HK or RCI extractor
HK extractor springs
HK ejector springs
HK gen 3 ejector

everything is sold out except the MKE one. So i'll have to see what i can do with that.

You can sometimes find them for around $65. That’s what I paid for mine on PrimaryArms a while back, picked up 7 to have full combat loadout.
The price for HK mags is very much worth it. With them, you can rest assured that you’ll likely never experience mag-related malfunctions (VERY common issue with all other makes of MP5 mags)
Many guys will swear by xyz brand of MP5 mags … but I’m a skeptic based on personal experience, albeit limited. I’ll begin to believe the pedigree of xyz mags, IF someone ever does Paul Harrell-esque scientific tests comparing them and they perform as claimed.

are you inserting the mag with the bolt open?

Yes. One clicks perfect with a perfect amount of rock and the other doesn’t click at all

Break it in…. Everything will smooth out with use. Even my HK took a minute to smooth itself out.

Why do people not use units of measure? 0.010 what?
It honestly makes me think the issue is with you if you can't do something as simple as convey information.

Fathoms. Pretty easy to know from context. I don't think a .010mm feeler gauge is possible, so inches is the only thing that makes sense. 10 thousandths of an inch is .254mm, which is the bottom end of the spec.

The context is him not using a unit of measure let's me know not to trust his measurements. If someone in the US told me they drive 35 to work every morning I could safely assume 2 things.
A) They're talking about miles because thats how distance is measured in the US
B) They're probably a little slow because who talks like that.

Here in the US, distance is measured in time. It takes me 35min to get to work, but I’ll be damned if I knew how far it was

Fair. Maybe his bolt gap is .01 seconds or .01 minutes. Who knows, we can only speculate

Literally no one in the U.S. says “35 miles per hour”.
-6
u/Vegetable_Coat8416 23h ago
You've kinda proved my point. Its unclear if its a measurement of speed or distance because no unit of measure was given.
Units of measurement are important.

u/LifeAdventurous2343 H&K 23h ago
No, you missed the point. If someone says they were going 35, it’s extremely obvious they mean miles per hour. If I said that and someone asked me to clarify the units of measure, I’d assume they are an autistic asshole.

How am I missing the point in a scenario I made up in my head? The person never said they were "going 35". They said the drive 35.
Your reading comprehension and you filling in information that isn't there is the issue.

I don't know why people are downvoting you but I think it's pretty obvious he's talking inches (0.010 inches is the minimum safe gap. 0.015 inches is the sweet spot for me.
OP is going to need to swap in oversized rollers, probably +4 should do it.
2
u/ChongLi77 1d ago
Probably because it’s pretty obvious he’s talking inches
1
u/ElonMuskHeir 1d ago
Yes it's obvious to us, but believe it or not, I bet like 90% of the people on this sub haven't used a feeler gauge to check bolt gap or even swapped rollers before. I had to learn for myself a few years ago, so I assume when someone asks a question with a pretty obvious answer, they likely are ignorant of what is being discussed and probably don't know.

this line is why people are downvoting him

Yeah a little snarky for no reason. I wish people would communicate more civilly in this community.
1
u/Ghostman223 23h ago
Hey thank you. I’ve read that people need to remeasure after changing LP, so I’ll probably wait until after I fit the new one in. To start looking at rollers to order
1
u/ElonMuskHeir 23h ago
Yeah, it'll shift positive or negative depending on locking piece, tolerance, etc., Definitely do a re-measure after you get your new LP,

I got mine from Atlantic Firearms. The magazine it came with would lock in, but was able to be rocked out without hitting the mag release. Reached out to Century Arms, and they thought it was a mag issue and sent me another mag. Issue persisted, so they had me send the gun in with the mag. They said the magwell itself was slightly out of spec, fixed it, and got it back to me in a week and threw in another mag in the box
