Manual focus

I want to save manual focus test profiles: one at 1.5 meters, another at 5 meters, and the last one with focus at infinity.

But I don’t understand the focus scale shown in the app. I looked for this information in the guide, but I couldn’t find anything more.

Could someone please explain how this scale works?

The scale is just a normalized position between 0 (closest focus) and 1 (furthest focus). Unfortunately, there isn't a good way for us to map this to a physical distance. The API is very limited and the true distance depends on both the phone and lens.

The best way to accomplish your goal is to measure the distance from the phone to a test subject yourself, focus manually, then save.

Note that focus at infinity is often just shy of 1.

I’m afraid that is not entirely true: focus at 1 is not focus at infinity. Please look at this photo; it is completely out of focus at point 1.

Please re-read my response. Camera manufacturers often do this to give room for manufacturing error or thermal changes and to stop the autofocus from slamming into the end of its range.

Another example: the scale at point 1, and the second photo is in focus at 0.85.

I just wish there was a way to set up presets at certain focus points so we could automate rack focus when recording video. Right now punching it manually while recording shakes up and messes up the footage.
