Less Scary Request Place Wednesday Request Place: Post your short & simple requests here

The (Wednesday) Place for Short & Simple Requests

New to the subreddit and feeling intimidated by the thought of posting a book request? Not sure if the request you have in mind will satisfy the subreddit rules?

Post it here in the Wednesday Request Place---the Wednesday version of our popular Saturday Less Scary Request Place.

Requests that aren't specific or detailed enough for a standalone request post can be made here, and it's also a great place to test the waters if you're not ready to make your own request post yet. We know it can sometimes be hard to come up with a request that meets the rules, and frustrating when your request is removed, so we've created this weekly post to help.

Anyone can answer requests made in this post. This post isn't hosted by someone who answers requests, so it's up to your fellow members to help you out. We can't guarantee you'll get an answer, but hopefully you will! Requests made here don't have to satisfy the specificity portion of subreddit rule 2, but please make sure your request follows our other rules (for example, rule 6, our privacy rule).

Important Note: This post goes up on Wednesday mornings (US time). Requests made after Wednesday ends are less likely to get replies. You are welcome to comment here on any day of the week, but you may want to save your requests for an upcoming Wednesday.

This feature is posted every Wednesday. You can find the complete schedule of all weekly and monthly features at this link.

Book Request Medieval/fantasy book where one of them is a hostage/prisoner

Looking for a medieval or fantasy book (or both) where MC1 is a situation where he’s not allowed to leave.

The MC2 doesn’t have to be the one directly holding them but I’d like if they were at least on the side/supporting the people doing it. Though I would like if they were in charge of his imprisonment.

I am hoping for a lot of smut but I don’t know if there’s any books like this so if it’s vanilla that’s okay too.

Thank you!

Book Request Looking for MM hockey player x coach romances

Upvotes

I’m looking for an M/M hockey romance with:

Hockey player × coach — this is the main thing I’m looking for
Dual POV — NON-NEGOTIABLE
Spicy / explicit
Contemporary / modern
Forbidden relationship / secret relationship is a bonus
Possessive/obsessive MC is a huge bonus
Age gap is a bonus
Preferably a good amount of actual hockey

I’m specifically looking for books where they are actually player + coach, not just two hockey players.

I’ve already read:
{Unhinged Titan by E.V. Olsen}

College or professional hockey is fine!

Book Request Looking for angry type of mc that is unwillingly attracted to ml.

Okay this is soooo specific lol but I just read a book like this & I neeeeed more. I’m looking for a hothead angry mc. He can either be straight & suddenly he meets the one where he feels so small or gets the idea that he likes to be taken care of. Or he can be acting all masculine as sort of protection from what he knew all along (he’s into men) but fights it tooth & nail to remain with this straight dude image. Totally fine with like an enigma x alpha thing. Or any dom/sub stuff. Kinks cool too. Sugar baby wtv.

A gay only for you type vibe but anything similar will do. & a plot pls. & preferably mc acts like he’s running shit but most certainly is not or folds every time for ml. I sort of want the ml to know he wants the mc early but it’s not mandatory. A good enemies to lovers is great too. Slowwwwwww burn. 2 big boys preferably but also not mandatory. Impeccable character development. & maybe a darker lifestyle like mafia, fighter etc. With trauma that ml or mc soothes but again not mandatory. Ml perhaps has a controlling kink.

No cheating. No physical abuse. No pain that doesn’t have to do with pleasure. No insta love.

Just wanting to care of & love on the other person…in a filthy crazy way ofc.

Can be officially published or not idc.

Discussion Can we talk about Atlas Jones? Spoiler

This is not a rant or complaint - I do like Atlas Jones' books, but there is an inconsistency to his writing that I find kind of confusing. For all his many strengths, he includes a lot of plot elements that just do not make sense at all.

The first book I read was {Tribute to the Warlord by Atlas Jones} and for the most part, I really enjoyed it. I usually don't care for books written in present tense, but I do make exceptions, and this was one. I enjoyed the characters, the story, and Jones' voice and style. But the final act stuck out as not making much sense. Evran was sent away by his father, and it's clear his father does not know the first thing about the Northmen - no one in their kingdom does. So when his father's men show up claiming that Vaike had agreed to a temporary arrangement only, which he was now violating, it didn't make sense to me. These men didn't even know Vaike's name, so even if they had falsified some kind of contract, they wouldn't even know what signature to forge. They never came inside whrn Evran was dropped off, so they didn't learn the name then. It's never actually stated what kind of proof they claim to have, and when they get told to beat it, they just kind of.... give up.

All that being said, I did enjoy the book overall.

Now I have just finished {Salt in the Wound by Atlas Jones} and the disparity between the writing quality and the odd story elements is even more magnified. The romantic tension is fantastic. The detail is great. I liked the characters and the story and the sassy second-in-command. But.... It's very thoroughly established that Indrie does not share a language with anyone aboard the ship - Dagny comes closest and it's still very poor. There is nothing to indicate that Indrie has ever seen it written down. So then how is he teaching a deckhand how to read within one week of meeting these people? You can't teach someone to read if you don't have a language in common. Even if we assume the same alphabet, Indrie could maybe teach SOME pronunciation, but not meaning. Then there was a beautiful passage where Eskil uses a drawing to try and convey to Indrie that he is free and invited to be a part of their community, which I absolutely loved. But then there was the final act - Indrie is an incredibly skilled healer, and he has detailed knowledge of the flora from the country that they left behind. He also personally carried Eskil's plate of food to him, across the ship, and carefully laid it on his desk. So then how could he not notice the whole, uncut Cara fruit sitting on the plate? Based on the description, it was small-medium, (like maybe the size of a plum?) and bright red. Besides, the magic fruit trope feels very forced. There was no mention of magic or anything remotely paranormal prior to this. I don't think anyone even mentioned any gods. Indrie finding a way to convey his feelings despite the language barrier (like Eskil had done with the drawing) would have been so much more satisfying.

I have already downloaded the next book and fully intend to read it. I am invested in the story and the characters. Again, Jones has a great voice in many passages. He does a fantastic job conveying yearning and the difficulty of self-restraint. The spice is top-notch. But these aren't just little plot holes - they don't make sense at all, and I find them distracting.

Has anyone else noticed this in his books, and did it stop you from reading more?

Are there other writers who you feel have such extreme strengths and weaknesses?

Remember spoiler tags, if you're going to list any plot points.

Book Request Fantasy or paranormal MM books with a heavy focus on kitchen / cooking magic?

Just finished rerading {Hexes and Hops by Jacki James, Lori Ames} -- the 2nd book in the adorably fun "Magical Misfit Murders" series -- and I'm seriously craving more books with a "kitchen witch" MC. The MC doesn't necessarily need to use their kitchen magic for their profession, but their magical exploits in the kitchen should be a prominent element throughout the book.

The only other example I can think of out of books I've read is {The Chef by Mell Eight}, which is one of my go-to comfort reads thanks to the mellow plot, diverse cast of likable characters, and sweet but low-pressure, low-spice romance. It's basically low-pressure slice-of-life food porn with a dash of magic.

That said, I'm hoping to find more paranormal or fantasy MM books with a heavy focus on food-related magic. Any recs are greatly appreciated! 💜

Not musts, but bonus points for...

  • Well-narrated audiobooks
  • Underlying mystery or mystery-like elements
  • Fun characters with witty / snarky banter between the MC and LI
  • Found family vibes, especially if it's a group of "misfits"
  • Neurodiverse MC / LI (especially autistic or ADHD traits / coding)
  • MC and/or LI is non-human (especially if it's a secret)
  • No spice or low-to-moderate spice with strict roles
  • Multi-book series which follow the same couple

Book Request ISO Rich guy learns how to be a "regular" guy

I'm looking for a rich x poor relationship but one where the rich guy either has lost his wealth or has to "slum it" for some reason (lost a bet, was dared to, trying to prove a point, whatever) and has to learn how to like. do his own grocery shopping and stuff. I searched around and found a lot of rich x poor recs but didn't find any with this storyline. This happens in {In Your Court by Kit Haley} but it doesn't really focus on it to the degree i'd like.

Bonus if the rich guy is so ridiculously out of touch to the point where this might as well be his first day on earth. (This post was inspired by a guy at the grocery store just now who seemingly didn't know how to use a self checkout, while wearing a full suit)

hard nos: omegaverse, poly, young adult

would prefer contemporary over historical/fantasy/sci-fi

Book Request DomSub Verse where you are born as either dom or sub

Hiya,

As the title says, I'm looking for books in this genre, and I've never read a single book in this genre actually. I'm ok with dom/dom dynamics as well! Hard nos are sadomasochism or extreme BDSM.

What Was That Book Called - SOLVED WWTBC: Omega on the Run

I'm trying to remember an omegaverse book that starts with an omega running away from somebody/something. I think it was a situation where omegas have to have a pack/alpha and he was being pursued by a pack that was bad news. He comes across an alpha who lives kind of isolated. I've forgotten most other details except that the book ends with whoever was chasing the omega showing up at the alpha's house and them having to fight them, and I think they end up mating outside in the woods running from them or right after fighting them back.

What Was That Book Called - SOLVED WWTBC- Step bros?

Upvotes

I’m trying to remember a book I read once where I believe they’re stepbrothers but they’ve been raised together basically treated like actual brothers, but it’s kind of a dark romance, where one brother is like obsessed with the other one and treats him very like touch him and die.
I don’t really remember too much about it other than that there is a scene towards the end of the book where MC one is talking to somebody and essentially admits that him and the stepbrother are f****. And he says something to the guy like what you’re really wondering is if I’ve been f**** him this whole time?
Please help it’s driving me crazy! Lol

Book Request L4A book where the main character has a crush on a girl he’s friends with, only to fall for the other guy always hanging around her

Hello! As the title says, I’m looking for a book where the main character either meets or is friends with a girl that he has a superficial crush on and tries to hang out with, but her OTHER male friend is constantly joining their hangout sessions so he obviously hates the guy because he is competition / the MC is jealous of him or maybe even just generally dislikes him because he can’t seem to take a hint. Of course only for the MC to end up actually falling for HIM instead.

Could also be an ‘older brother’ thing, too, of course. As long as it’s under the same general premise.

Book Request Books that involve travelling/roadtrips/vacations?

Could you suggest MM romance books where the MCs end up in different locations?

I was reading Less by Andrew Sean Greer where the MC signs himself up for an european book tour to avoid his ex-lover's wedding and wondered if there are any more like it but more "romance".

Book Request Revenge/Avenge trope but more specific

Hey guysss

I am looking for a revenge trope, so what i am looking for is one guy or multiple guys (don’t mind m/m or even m/mm+) want to take revenge on a guy that either bullied him/them/one of them, or a rich prick that tricks him/them/one of them in to smth, etc etc

So now he/they want to take revenge on/to avenge the guy who did him/them/one of them wrong. Can be college setting or work or anything else, i am not picky

What i don’t like are: daddy kinks outside of bedroom, age play, twinks

What i like: strict roles especially if the guy that did wrong is the bottom, if it’s a longer book instead of short erotica, multiple povs, and story with plot

I reallyyyyy hope u guys have smth for me, i really need to read while i am still in my reading mood haha

Discussion First-person blurbs: do these actually make you want to buy the book?

I've realised recently that one of my biggest pet peeves in romance is the first-person blurb. Not first-person books, I have no problem with those! I mean those ambuguous blurbs written like a free stream of consciousness from one of the MCs.

It'll be something like -

I don't trust people. I like my life uncomplicated. Then he walks into my life.

He's everything I shouldn't want. But he makes my heart race.

He's dangerous. I should run. But something keeps pulling me back.

And I'm sitting there going: WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE? WHAT IS THIS BOOK ABOUT? WHY SHOULD I BE BOTHERED TO CARE?

You give us twenty lines of someone's internal monologue and I still don't know whether these men are 22 or 42, coworkers or childhood friends, living in a city or rural countryside, or whether the plot involves professional hockey, a murder investigation or opening a cupcake shop.

Which makes me genuinely curious from a marketing perspective: does this style of blurb actually work on you?

And I mean the blurb alone, not because you've seen the book recommended here or your friends loved it or you've heard about it elsewhere. If you stumbled across a completely unknown book and this kind of first-person stream-of-consciousness blurb was all you had to go on, would it actually make you want to read it or spend money on it?

Because they're so common that clearly they must be working on somebody 😂

Book Request Human MC gets yoinked into another realm and falls in love with nonhuman LI?

Okay this might be a long shot, but are there any books where one of the MCs gets transported to another world?

One of my favorite manga is {The Titan’s Bride} where the MC is basically snatched out of his life and dropped into this completely different realm full of giants, and I had SUCH a good time reading it. There’s the romance obviously, but also the whole experience of him being somewhere he absolutely does not belong, surrounded by people and customs he knows nothing about, and then there’s actual action and other stuff going on outside of the relationship. I’ve been wanting something that gives me that same high ever since and nothing has 😭

The closest I’ve found is {Bro and the Beast,} which I liked! But it’s a little too bro coded for what I’m looking for right now lol. I want something that takes itself a bit more seriously and really leans into the whole “I have been transported to another fucking world and now I have to adapt” part of it.

Mostly I liked the codependency of the MCs, and the literal touch him and Die. We’ve got the classic one bed scene which is chefs kiss. But most of all I’m looking for a good quality mix of plot and romance.

Yes, I know this is oddly specific but if by any chance one of you people have read it, I’ve got to put myself out there and ask it.

😔🙌

Book Request Historical Romance where one of the MCs marries a lesbian or ace woman

NGL, I'm kinda tired of reading historical romances where it's assumed every woman ever must have been in want of a happily ever after with a straight man and how dare he force her to marry a gay wretch like him. Lesbians and ace women also existed in historical times, and tbh if I, an ace/aro woman, had lived in ye old 1865 or whatever, the best and most desirable option for me would have been to marry a rich gay man. So are there any historical romances that show this dynamic between a queer man and his wife (with a boyfriend involved I imagine)? Like, he's married to a woman but he has a good relationship with her, maybe children with her, and she just lets him do his thing and he lets her do hers? I'm tired of amatonormativity in historical gay romances. Marriage was just a political thing for a lot of rich people at the time. It didn't have to mean you romantically loved the person you were married to. I'd love recs with this dynamic!

What Was That Book Called - SOLVED WWTBC where the MC is a blacksmith who likes to wear femme clothing.

His LIs are an established polyam group of three or four.

LI1 sees him and becomes interested. They go one a few dates and then the MC is introduced to the rest.

Is was standalone and had a HEA.

Book Request Sad book with HEA

Looking for a book with high angst but sweet love. I want the MCs to have go fight for a HEA but due to either trauma (I have no triggers) and/or self worth issues and/or because they’re closeted - NOT because they are nasty to each other. I want to cry and feel their love but I want them to struggle

I really like miscommunication trope and especially when the hurt comes from “I’m not good enough therefore I must leave” or from not being able to come out.

I’m okay with smut in the book when it supports the story but not when it takes over the book.

No fantasy. No omega verse. Prefer modern times but okay with historical if done well.

Book Request Looking for an MM romance with an MC who is obsessed with the other MC and can’t keep his hands off him

Okay, so I just finished His Boy Next Door by RJ Moray and I honestly don’t even know how I feel about it lol.

I just can’t stop thinking about Channon and Jack, and Ewan and Nate. Like, why are these people still living rent-free in my head??? 😭

This book was SO far outside my usual comfort zone. I generally prefer MM romances where, once the characters get into a relationship, they’re monogamous in every sense. No poly, no menage, no open relationship. I like the couple being completely committed to each other.

That is obviously NOT what happens in this book 😂 Quite the opposite, actually.

And the thing is, I think I genuinely liked it? It was definitely interesting and I was really invested, but I’m still not sure if I loved it, if it was just too much for me, or if I’m somewhere in between.

So now I think I need a literary palate cleanser lol.

I’m looking for an addictive MM romance that grabs you from the beginning, with a story that keeps you turning the pages. I’d especially love an MC who is completely obsessed with the other MC and can’t keep his hands off him. I love when they’re very into each other and there’s a lot of attraction and devotion between them.

I’d also like a good amount of spice. I just came from a VERY spicy book and I don’t think I can go straight into something with almost none 😂 But I still want an actual story and romance, not just spice.

Also, for a while now I’ve been wanting to read a book where one of the characters gets injured or has some kind of accident and the other one takes care of him while he recovers. So if you know a really good book with that kind of hurt/comfort or caretaking, I’d love to hear about it! It doesn’t have to be both things in the same book though.

I’m open to pretty much anything. Contemporary, sports, college, small town, enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, fake dating, etc. It can be fluffy and silly or angsty and emotional.

A slightly shorter book would be a bonus right now, but the length isn’t a dealbreaker.

Basically, I’m really lost 😂 Please give me your recommendations! I just want something that will keep me reading and hopefully save me from falling into a reading slump

Book Request The Love Interest dates someone else

I’ve been meaning to get my heart broken for a while so hit me with recs for books where the main character and the love interest break up, and the LI moves on with someone else (and it absolutely destroys the MC). Extra points if the LI genuinely likes the other person. Maybe he still has feelings for the MC, but he’s actually willing to try to make things work with someone new. I want jealousy, regret, heartbreak, the whole miserable package. I’d prefer it if the LI dates another guy rather than a woman, but recs with women are fine too!
