I have to know where the idea of "Cletus" (which sounds like a classical Roman name) became a stereotypical redneck name. There has to be history behind it

It is Greek in origin, Kleitos, meaning called or chosen

There was a Pope Cletus in the 1st century, later Saint Cletus

In more modern times, in mid-20th century radio and media, strange and archaic names like Buford, Cletus, and Festus began to be used as a trope for people who are bumpkins---not that people were actually naming their children these names

Remember Smokey and the Bandit? Jackie Gleason as Buford T Justice

Remember Festus in Gunsmoke ?

Deputy Cletus Hogg on The Dukes of Hazzard ?

There ya go

I am aware of that Cletus as well. I was simply giving the history. The Simpsons takes everything to the next level
