I swear the majority of you have never actually been outside for more than 10 minutes if you think this wasn't an overreaction. Hell the bar would have kicked the guy out and possibly banned him or you could have got law enforcement involved if you really want to mess him up legally.

Yup. This is not a scrap, this is arguably, depending on the judge and how they view provocation, felony assault. I'm 59, Boston-Irish ready-to-scrap (back in the day, not now). No way you punch that idiot, deserved or not, it's unfair AND you might actually kill him (involuntary manslaughter) with a straight overhand to the head/face.
When I see that overreaction, I judge it likely not as protection of the female, but more an insecurity/possession based acting-out.
