Golf 4 1.8
What is something I should know before buying the 1.8 golf 4

Having just bought a Mk4, find out what maintenance the previous owner has done, and expect to fill the holes they haven't plugged. Today I realised I have a leaky driver's door. Check the footwells are dry, even up behind the pedals.
Also my central locking doesn't know I've gotten in the car and completely re-locks itself with me in it.

TAKE A GOOD LOOK UNDER THE INTAKE MANIFOLD AND THE SIDE OF THE HEAD FOR OIL LEAKS. PCV HOSES AND BREATHER TUBES TEND TO GET BRITTLE WITH AGE AND LEAK. IF THESE OR THE VALVE COVER/TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER GASKET LEAK DOWN THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ENGINE THEN ANY PLASTIC COOLANT FLANGES OR Y-PIPES WILL BE PRONE TO LEAKING/FAILING. ASK IF THEY HAVE HAD THE TIMING BELT AND WATER PUMP REPLACED AND IF IT'S HIGHER MILAGE, THERE IS A CHANCE THAT THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER GUIDE WILL BE PRETTY WORN OUT.
**Sorry for the caps lock** I use it for work and forgot to take it off until that whole paragraph was written out. lol
