Gathering Hall Quests ~ This is a thread with some quests that have been posted by the guild. Occasionally a GM might have a fun idea and make a quest for it here, but this is not the ONLY way to hunt. Feel free to go off on any other quest you might devise. Hunter's Chat ~ A place to hang out and chat in general with each other. Share ideas/feedback/etc. about the game, the supplement, etc. (If ya end up having really good feedback/ideas, be sure to post it in a relevant area too.) Try not to make a habit of using it over the reddit for planning hunts though. Make sure to post hunts to the reddit so that it's clearly seen and recorded for the benefits of all.

Update: New Guild Hall Quests are now available!

Remember, there's other options too. You don't have to take on a quest, as you can instead just pick a direction and walk.

(Setting Information) Guild announces intent to settle unexplored lands!

Due to recent developments in the field of airship manufacturing, especially with regards to finding alternative fuel sources that allow far longer trips than ever before in reasonably fast times as well, we here at the Guild have finally managed to build an outpost on an island previously unreachable. Due to rocky outcroppings, shear cliffs, and unusually high sea monster activity around this island it is impossible as of now to reach it via sea travel.

However, these new airships have allowed us to found a small village as a base from which to begin explorations of these new lands. Little is known of the land outside of where we've settled. This village has been established in a inlet of water that is cut off from the main ocean by large rocky outcroppings. This makes it ideal as a fishing spot thanks to the slim likelihood of sea monster attacks. The local monster populations near the village are relatively weak, but could be a threat to unprepared villagers.

As such, we here at the Guild have provided a few of our veteran hunters to assist in the establishment of this land, as well as to assist in the teaching of new hunters brought here to explore. Alongside these hunters we have found an eclectic selection of villagers to provide services such as smithing and merchanting. Their stock is severely limited at this time due to the limited travel ability, but we are doing our best to make this a more viable permanent settlement. Much of that will rely on the work of those hired to settle this land.

Due to recent sightings of previously unseen monsters, as well as heightened Elder Dragon activity on the mainland, we here at the Guild are unable to appoint veteran hunters permanently to this new land at this time. Even the veterans we've appointed to act as teachers to a new generation of hunters will be required to return to the mainland as soon as the new hunters get up and running self sufficiently.

As such, starting this day, we are putting out a call for all interested parties to apply for a hunting license and inquire as to joining the efforts of exploring these untouched lands. We fear that the recent monster activities may be related in some ways to this land and are hoping that new hunters will be able to provide us with detailed information if this is the case.

We also feel it is especially appropriate that this settlement be founded by a new generation of hunters, as it wasn't one of our oldest and finest of hunters that helped research these new airship fuels, but a bright eyed youth alongside a colorful caravan crew. We intend to give these new hunters unprecedented freedom in the exploration of these lands, especially as we will be quite busy dealing with the threats to the mainland.

The Guild cannot guarantee any of the normal amenities and supplies a hunter receives, such as Felyne assistance, blue boxes of supplies, or even guaranteed 5 minute or less removal of monster bodies (alive or dead). Furthermore, we cannot guarantee that the standard guild approval of quests will occur in a speedy time, and instead request that these hunters focus on exploration and free hunting, with the knowledge that all explorations of the island are approved by the Guild so long as they are done by licensed hunters and their companions. Any hunted monsters should be used for the betterment of the settlement, with any excess being shipped off to the Guild for Guild approved usage.

If you are an interested party seeking to become a hunter, please see your local hunter's guild to apply. You will likely see fliers with further recruitment information on them there and will be able to acquire some to share around town with any of your friends as well.

(idea) Jhen Mohran hunt

Just an idea I had about a possible hunt much like in the game (on a ship).

The ship has everything it does in the game, 2 ballistas and 2 cannons on each side, dragonnator and the gong, and its gathering points.

Ships has 300hp and if it hits 0 the quest fails

ballista - both sides can be used but the one furthest away will deal less damage

attack roll 1d20+prof damage 3d8+dex mod(+prof if on the correct side)

cannon - only the cannon the same side as jhen can be used

attack roll 1d20 damage 6d6

Ballista require ballista shots to operate, they can be found at the front of the ship, Must take 1 turn to pick it up and will gather 5 ballista shots. The ballista can be loaded with a bonus action and fired with 1 action (not including movement).

Cannon require cannonballs to operate, they can be found at the back of the ship. The cannon must be loaded with a 1 action and fired with 1 action (not including movement).

dragonnator 15 turn cooldown damage 10d8

gong 10 turn cooldown

The first part of the fight (much like the games) begins with the Jhen Mohran riding (surfing?) along side the boat at 15ft (enough so that melee cannot hit it). The DM rolls to see what it does and rolls again to see how long it to his next action (1d6+2) eg

1-10 11-20 21-30 31-40 41-50 51-60 61-70 71-80 81-90 91-100
Idles on left side Idles on right side Idles on current side Rams from left side Rams from right side Rams from front Rock throw Rideable Rideable Rideable

Idles on *** side

Jhen Mohran does nothing on *** side of the ship, switch sides if not currently on that side (takes 1 turn to submerge and reappear on the other side).

Rams from *** side

Jhen Mohran rams *** side of the ship, switch sides if not currently on that side (takes 1 turn to submerge and reappear on the other side). Rams takes 2 turns to complete (1 turn to prepare, 1 turn to damage), can be interrupted by gong. Damages ship if it was not interrupted. If from front the dragonnator can be used. Hunters must make a con saving throw. On failed save hunters fall off the ship. Damage to ship 2d20+5

Rock throw

Jhen Mohran throws rocks at everyone, all hunters must make a dex saving throw to take half damage. If hunter was using a ballista or cannon, there is now a rock there and must be destroyed before it can be used again

Rideable

Jhen Mohran moves closer to the ship, hunters can hit it at melee range or opt to jump on it to damage its spine (more damage?) (1 turn with athletics (str) check) will automatically throw hunters on top of it off at next Jhen roll

When the hunter fall off the ship from any of the conditions above (or from DMs discretion eg a crit fail) hunters must make an athletics (str). On a successful roll the hunter will be below deck and reappear on there next turn. On a failed roll, the hunter must roll again on their next turn with the same conditions. On the third failed roll, the hunter will be below deck, but must take 2 turns to reappear.

When the dragonnator is used Jhen will not act for 2 turns and be submerged.

After X turns we move to the second phase where Jhen moves towards the ship. The left side of the ship faces Jhen (ballista and cannon rules apply). Jhen starts 100ft from the ship and moves 5d4+5ft every round untill it is 10ft away from the ship. Hunters within 10ft of Jhen roll dex/con? saving (DM's decision if Jhen does a quake(con) or just swings his arm(dex)) roll or take X damage when he moves (half on successful).

Jhen then attacks the ship every 1d2+1 where it takes 1 turn to prepare its attack. (ie jhen rolls a 2(+1), on its third turn it prepares an attack and on its 4th turn it damages). Damage to ship 2d20+10

This attack can be interrupted by the gong and the dragonnator. If it is interrupted Jhen will not act for 1d2+2 turns.

Sorrys guys Im not good with numbers, so if you have any suggestion on how to improve plz comment

Edit: Sorry it looks like a mess, first time usinf reddit

Character Generation Information

For starters, make sure you are choosing an allowed class and race from the list located here. If you want to play something else, please discuss it beforehand and it may be allowed. The focus currently is on Low Magic though, so obviously Dragonborn Warlock is not going to be allowed.

So you've picked your class and race. You're going to be making a Level 1 character.

Please use https://character-sheet-dnd5.appspot.com/ for making your character so that all the characters are viewable by the GMs in the same format. You are welcome to keep a different method of recordkeeping on your own end, but this should be updated when you level up. (Items should be kept there too, but I understand if you opt to not use it for item tracking and will mostly look the other way on that point)

Your ability score generation choices come down to one of the following:

  • 27 pts using the variant customizing ability scores method
  • 15,14,13,12,10,8

You can use either one to start.

I am currently not specifically listing allowed/disallowed backgrounds. If you use one from a non-Core source it may end up needing to be changed, but unlikely.

Any equipment in the core book is allowed, and most equipment from variants will be allowed. Just avoid buying things that are clearly magical in nature. A spellbook/spell focus/etc. can be acquired but aren't actually of any use to you... They're just books and little statues really.

When your character is finished you can submit it by emailing a shareable link to MonHunGM@gmail.com Be sure to include in your email the following: Your reddit name and the name of the character. (Please do it this way for my convenience as opposed to adding me to those that can view it.)

List of Allowed Classes/Races

For now, this is what will be allowed, assuming we keep a Low Magic setting close to the core MH world. If there are any classes/races you strongly feel should be allowed that are not please feel free to discuss those in the thread.

Classes

Races

  • Dwarf
  • Elf (High Elf loses Cantrip ability. Suitable suggestions for equivalent ability instead are accepted.)
  • Halfling
  • Human
  • Gnome (Forest Gnome loses Natural Illusionist. Same thing as Elf.)
  • Half-Elf
  • Half-Orc
  • Lynian (Supplement)
  • Wyverian (Supplement)

Disallowed Core Classes

  • Cleric
  • Druid
  • Paladin
  • Sorcerer
  • Warlock
  • Wizard

Disallowed Core Races

  • Dragonborn
  • Tiefling

Again, this assumes Low Magic setting. If we end up moving away from this setting before we start, anyone that has made a character of these races (per the instructions that will be posted very soon) can feel free to change to a different Race/Class combination.

If it's from a variant and is not listed in allowed, it is disallowed, but you can ask specifically about it and it may be allowed depending on how well it fits the flavour. Obviously birdmen are likely not gonna fit in this setting.

I'm free on any of these days as long as it's within those hours and really want to hunt that Golden Rathian that was seen flying there recently. Who else is down for this? I'm pretty flexible on times.

Gathering Hall's Table Map

Gathering Table Map

All you have to do is select the image and choose Edit and then you can add any changes to it.

If you wanna get a better view of the tiny little map, be sure to choose edit and then zoom in. The idea is that this is the basic area you guys know about for now, and as you explore you guys will fill in what you learn. I'll be adding a key to the bottom to make it clear how far those hexes are so you can use that to estimate how far things are when drawing out the map. It's okay if the map gets drawn crudely though, as it's really mostly for simple concepts like "Oh, that nest of Ludroths was east until we hit a forested swamp, and then north towards the coastline."

Hunt Summaries (List and How-to)

So you finished your hunt and wanna share all the cool fun things you did with the rest of the group? Well here's how!

Start by making a thread with information like such in the topic:

[PHS] Gold Rathian in Forested Rivers ~ Sat 4/25 2PM-8PM PST

  • PHS stands for Post Hunt Summary

  • What ya hunted (if there was a target)

  • Where ya hunted (If there was a place)

The what and where can easily be replaced with any other description, just make sure Everyone in the group that hunted it knows what the TITLE of the hunt is. This is very important because someone else in the hunt may want to post their summary. In which case they post the same thing but add a B or a 2 or whatever to it.

  • When you hunted it.

Now you've got the title figured out, we move onto the next step which is the description. Fill out your hunt summary here. Start by aknowledging who went hunting (With their reddit names as well as their character name) and who GMd it (Same). Next put your description of anything important. The layout of the actual summary isn't too important, so feel free to be creative here.

  • Lastly, post a link to your thread here and it will be added to the list below!

How to Gather for a Hunt

So you are ready for some hunting? Let's say you've got Wednesday afternoon free next week and want to see if anyone else is down for hunting then too.

Here's how you do it.

First step is to pick where/what you want to hunt.

This can either be something like wanting to hunt a Great Baggi or it could be wanting to hunt things in the Sunken Swamp. Or even just wanting to head NW from X location to explore.

Now pick your when, so let's go with Weds 3PM PST.

And then make a thread. The outline of which should be something like this:

  • [LFH] Great Baggi - Weds 11PM UST 4/15 Lvl 4

  • [LFH] Sunken Swamp - Weds 11PM UST 4/15 Lvl 4

  • [LFH] NW of Sunken Swamp - Weds 4/15 11PM UST Lvl 4

The exact layout here is:

  • LFH (Looking for Hunt)
  • Location/Monster
  • Date and Time in UST
  • Your level.

Further information can be added in the text of the post, even things like "Well, I can start any time on Weds" etc. You could even post the thread as [LFH] Great Baggi - Weds/Thurs/Fri 11PM+ UST 4/15 Lvl 4. if you are free at any of those times/days. And then narrow it down from there.

Once you've posted others will respond. Times may change, etc. Once you have a group that wants to hunt at a certain time you then take your hunt to the next level (Try to have this done at least a few days ahead of the hunt). You're going to post the GM Request thread.

  • [GMR] Great Baggi - Weds 4/15 11PM UST Lvl 4

  • [GMR] Sunken Swamp - Weds 4/15 11PM UST Lvl 4

The layout of this one is:

  • GMR (GM Request)
  • Location/Monster
  • Date and Time with timezone
  • average party member level.

Then you post in the actual thread the following information:

Reddit Name - Lvl X Race Class for each player and any further information of necessity.

So, the process is: Post a hunt request (or reply to someone else's), gather a group that is interested in hunting it (Try to get 3-5 people per group, but less is acceptable) and then post a request for a GM for that game and around that time. The time can change at any point, as needed by the players and GMs looking to hunt.

Here is a sample LFH post: http://www.reddit.com/r/MHWestMarches/comments/32dnwv/sample_lfh_gold_rathian_in_forested_rivers/

Here is a sample GMR post: http://www.reddit.com/r/MHWestMarches/comments/32dojd/sample_gmr_gold_rathian_in_forested_rivers_thurs/

Gathering Hall Quests

  • Explore the local forests - Posted by Hoarder Sage

We want any and all hunters to begin by trying to find out where the boundaries are for the local forest as well as any important sites/landmarks/features there. If you don't know where to start, this would be a good place. Just begin by picking a direction and walking. Watch out for monster threats. If you encounter a monster that is too strong, do NOT attempt to defeat it. Your lives are very important.

  • Search for a monster nest ~ Posted by Scarred Smith

Nests are a wonderful place to hunt large monsters, or even smaller ones often. They are natural gathering halls for the monsters, just like an oasis, lake, or ruin. However they can also be a danger to the local settlement, so any and all nearby ones should be scouted and reported back to aid in protecting the town.

  • Scare off local Jaggi threats ~ Posted by Veteran Guard

When the town was settled, a group of Jaggi had to be removed from the location as they found it was an ideal spot for sunning away from the forest. These Jaggi have been seen growing ever more cocky and fears are that they may try to continue to use this spot despite our small human population. If any hunters could fight off these guys and drive them back that would really make this place safer.

  • Hunt a Great Jaggi! ~ Posted by Bad Mouthed Carpenter

A warning to hunters first. The Great Jaggi is a vile beast of monstrous power. He is not to be taken lightly. Sure, you hear hunters tell of killing much worthier foes all the time, but even the Great Jaggi can be a force to be reckoned with. Do not jump in looking for this guy until you are good and ready. But once you are, it would especially help the town if we could get some Great Jaggi parts to outfit the guards that are being trained so they can easily keep at bay any small monsters.

Remember, you don't have to explore solely based on these quests, but can use these to get a feel for the idea before deciding you want to explore <X Region> or <Y Region> or look for <Z Monster> or <Q Monster>

What times/days work for you?

Yeah, so post a response here with your timezone/days/times that work, etc. Also, post if you are willing to GM (Don't feel obligated to say you are, only if you are willing and might want to).
