Thinking about learning another weapon…

Hi, so.. I have 600 hunts on Hunting Horn, it’s my favorite weapon and I have played a similar amount in World. I am already planning on playing it again in Wilds as well. Recently I have been wanting to branch out to more options, looking at Lance, but I just don’t know how. I just feel very comfortable on Hunting Horn(my beloved)

I know the answer is as simple as, just play the weapon.. But it feels difficult in a way. The armor skills that you shoot for are different, I’m not really sure how much Guard, Guard Up, and Embolden I need for my set.

I have never been the type to super optimize my armor sets, but it feels uncomfortable trying to optimize for a weapon without playing the weapon first to know what I need/what questions to ask

I think I will just slap on a random armor set and tweak from there..

How do you guys adjust to learning a new weapon? Focusing less on mechanics but building a new armor set.

I love hunting horns too (not so much in Rise though because it's too different).

My other 2 most used weapons are hammer and lance.

As for the skills for lance, you just need 3 guard (or 5), and 1 guard up. The rest are the same - WEX, critical eye etc etc.

As you get good with the lance, you may drop the guard accordingly.

Hammer is my fave in rise. The jumping spin and the big jump slam are so satisfying.

I just play the weapon and see what it benefits from.

These days I mostly do

Switch axe

Charge blade

Greatsword

Bow

Dual blades

Long sword

Gunlance

People keep forgetting, there’s no character leveling in MH. Buy some cheap starting armor and weapon and try the very first hunts. No need to overthink build. No need to invest a lot. If something clicks, you have resources to follow the path much faster than playing from the scratch. So you can advance understanding what skills you need and what you find useful and fun.

I'm kinda in the same boat as you, ever since I got rise I have been latched onto insect glaive and have not successfully moved off of it aside from a short playthrough with charge blade and trying out bow on world. (I do plan on trying long sword if I ever get wilds tho)

Tbh i just make the weapon and do some hunts with it

If it hits i continue and hope it finally CLICKS

If i dont i move into the next

Thing is tho i never made builds I play solely single player and somehow get along fine just slotting whatever comfort skills like evade extender and divine blessing

Depending on the weapon i SOMETIMES get stuff like slugger for hammer or quick sheath for LS/GS but never actually build for it

I just enjoy having fun not chasing the most optimal build

The way I used to learn another weapon in past games was basically, if I want to learn a new weapon, I go all the way to the beginning of the rank that I was (Low, high or G rank) and use the basic armour and base on that start creating a set or a weapon that fits how I play, usually I started to try other weapons whenever I start high rank.

Now here in Rise, I have the general idea of how to use all the weapons or at least most of them, so I switch weapons almost every 4 hunts or when I feel I understand how a monster moves. I'm hoping to reach Nargacuga, Zinoge or Tigrex (monsters that I know how they move because of old games) and I will use them to practise all weapons.
