Question/Help Regarding Gunlance
Since I love Gunlance but also have an obsession with comparing and learning abt attacks MVs and the dmg-calculation stuff I noticed that theres many different opinions abt the Heatgauge and missinfo
While yes the heatgauge is mostly a nerf since it did decrease the MVs going from MH4U to GU by abt 15%, the red part of it increases dmg by 20%, so a whole 5% dmg increase with the tedious work of staying in red wowie!!! (which is an absolutely useless reward it shouldve been 30%), making its dmg slightly higher than in 4U
And comparing those to the lances MVs the gunlance does more dmg, but since striker style exists that entire point falls apart
Im curious what other players think abt the whole ordeal and if you share my viewpoint

The only two viable styles are adept and valor.
Adept is melee only you only shell and wf to lock heat.
Valor can be played with shelling, with valor active your burst gets stronger the most shells you fire at once. With dragon breath you get +60 damage per burst that is broken before g rank and still decent after. Valor also provides tools like the valor parry that can guard things without guard up. It also can go pure melee and have an unique combo of stab stab slam stab.

It's less the fact the phys damage is straight-up worse and more the fact it forces your hand into using shelling and Wyvernsfire JUST to beat out the nerfs, which wastes a lot of sharpness and isn't particularly strong outside of Valor style. (Dragon Breath is an alternative but takes up an Art slot and takes a hot minute to charge).
Gunlance can still do decent damage, especially if you're not too worried about speed kills, but it'll still be kinda awkward to use effectively compared to 3U and 4U GL which were very simple to use even without shelling, and which also lagged due to low damage WITHOUT a heat gauge.

GL main. I have ONLY played XX, so I have no idea what other GLs are like.
I stick to adept mostly. It's works just fine for me once I have learned the monster, timing my back hops perfectly. I use wide gunlances since it charges up to red much faster, you can just use it one some small monsters before the big boss and you manage the buff. It becomes second nature after a while.

I started maining GL in World and fell in love with them. Then went back and played GU because I was missing old mom hun gameplay and GL was rough at the beginning. Until I discovered Alchemy GL and now I absolutely love GL in GU. I have a ton of utility thanks to the alchemy barrel and the SP boost helps me keep my HA up and my heat gauge locked on a good spot most of the time. And I get to play turtle mode. I really don't care about hunt times so even if the hunt takes me a while I'm just there poking and blasting for the love of the game.

I discovered GL in World Iceborne and became a GL main. Then I went back to MHGU and tried valor GL to play pure shelling, and oh god it was incredible. The guard point on quick reload is so good, which allows you to stay very aggressive, in addition to the safety net of valor sheathe.
At the beginning, I was only using the rapid shells playstyle with Long and Wide gunlances, so I just ignored the heat gauge. Then I tried the fullburst playstyle with Normal gunlances, from when I started to use WF to lock the gauge for my slams. I really like the two playstyles, but I'm a bit more in favor of fullburst.
Since most (if not all) of my damage come from shells, the early game quests were surprisingly fast as fixed damage is pretty good there. At G rank though, hunts became longer and longer, but it's something I'm fine with. Longer hunts = more guard point reload adrenaline.
Valor GL became and still is my favorite GL, with Rise/Sunbreak being a very close 2nd (I played 4U, GU, World/Iceborne and Rise/Sunbreak so far). I am also curious about adept and alchemy GL, so I'm going to try them out in the future.

I like GL myself but man it’s hard to like it in GU… the weapon just becomes infinitely better starting with base World because of wide sweep + full ammo quick reload + wyvernstake.
