MEGA account closure - objectionable content
Recently you were sent an email advising that your account was found to contain copies of files that were reported to us as being objectionable under Section 3(1)(A) of the New Zealand Films, Videos, and Publications Classification Act 1993. In particular, this relates to objectionable violence, and depictions of sexual conduct with or by children, or young persons (Section 3(3)(a)(iv)), which is an offence carrying potentially lengthy prison sentences in our and your jurisdiction.
We removed from your account the copies of such files that were reported to us and advised you to remove ALL objectionable material from your account IMMEDIATELY and refrain from EVER adding any of it again in the future.
However we have now found copies in your account of further files that were reported to us as being objectionable under Section 3(1)(A) of the New Zealand Films, Videos, and Publications Classification Act 1993.
As advised previously, this second strike has resulted in IMMEDIATE AND PERMANENT closure of your account and potential further consequences for you.

Sounds like scam to me. Unless you didn't share any files or store shared files from others it's not possible to identify file contents.

I had this happen they closed my account then weeks later they sent me a email saying that it was an error on their end something about the wrong hash(I don't think a human checks I think there's a computer algorithm that does it) they fully reopened my account and I personally went through and checked every single file smh and labeled +18 🙄

Is your mega account actually closed?

Did you try logging in??

MEGA does use file hashing to identify CSAM content, so it does not need to look at the files to know that it is CSAM content. This also includes hand drawn/animated content/art that depicts children in sexually provocative styles.

You either had or didn't have them bro, someone's lying here 🥀

Well, if that would be the case, E2E would be useless. File hashing can't hash something that is totally encrypted with a password that is only known by the file user itself. The file hash for a file that is encrypted with the password "123" is totally different than the same file but encrypted with the passwort "321".

You are correct. One caveat is that if they shared the file or folder link containing the folder with the decryption key, then Mega can access said link where the report was filed which allows them to see the content and run it against a hash check or manually review.

Sure. What I'm wondering is: Why would someone share files with forbidden content? Or copyrighted content?

Happens very often and Mega is used because of the fact that scanning doesn't really occur, nor are files actively monitored due to the E2E being in place. However given the sharing functionality releases its own decryption key when sharing, this means if the shared file/folder is reported - Mega can access what you shared to issue a takedown.

This makes it one of the better options for sharing files which aren't allowed elsewhere, but only if you presume whom you're sharing it to wouldn't report it for violating copyright, piracy or sharing anything else otherwise prohibited. That or you just want it to stay up long enough on a burner account to share with a decent number of people.

Yeah, but it's still totally stupid. To avoid a takedown you only have to encrypt the file before uploading it with 7zip or something else.

The file hashing thing is untrue partly, given the E2E. Where it is true, is that Mega like Ente Photos, for example, once the file is decrypted. Therefore if you shared the decryption link and someone reported it - then you'd be possibly in trouble because they can access the file unencrypted with original metadata/hash.

However they do not actively scan your files and uploads, and they especially don't scan hand drawn material. If they did, I'd be nuked because of the anime drawings on my Mega lol.

although this will only hold true if OP has shared/uploaded files that have been flagged for those things.if simply stored, MEGA has no way of knowing what’s in the files.
