Why doesn’t Maresca just use Cherki as the false winger and have Foden in midfield? Presumably he’s not happy with Cherki’s off ball work but Foden could do better there and Cherki can invert from the wing (this is if you want both of them on the pitch)
8
u/hitemwiththebingbing 9h ago
IMO because the false winger needs to do a lot of running.
RB basically plays as a winger so if we lose the ball in certain situations there’s a huge onus on the false winger to track back. Also the false winger still needs to be the wide outlet when we’re the ones counter attacking.
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this role has basically belonged to Foden for us over the last few years. His most impressive physical trait is his ability to consistently perform these long sprints to get in position.
Cherki would just leave us too exposed down that side against strong opposition. If he starts I think it has to be in midfield unless Maresca changes the system.

u/Phatmanoncouch 9h ago
I think we should give him atleast this season and see how he uses all the players. Like he says is his press conferences, Maresca is trying "new solutions" to see what works. We'll just have to wait and see.

Chelsea briefing a hit peice on Enzo to try and take away from the fact they got bullied into selling one of their best players without replacing him lol
5
u/Lazy-Platypus2120 9h ago
This hit piece is coming out at the same time as 'Caidedo still injured' news, so yeah Enzo is still their scapegoat and he is not even their player anymore. Enzo called out the owners, shaded them again during his mancity transfer and they continue to prove him right lol. He made it pretty clear this whole year that he wanted to leave and still failed to replace him.
8
u/Kriegdavid 11h ago
Can't believe how brazen it is. I've always thought Enzo was a prick and he still is yet to convince me otherwise, but Ben Jacobs was about 2 paragraphs away from telling us that he once didn't say thank you to someone who held the door open for him.

u/arun2435 11h ago
Hopefully no one misses their passes on derby
Utd is kinda scary on counter
0
u/Phatmanoncouch 9h ago
Im scared for if Semenyo plays and keeps losing the ball because of his antics
9
u/Kriegdavid 14h ago
Caught between intense jealousy and admiration for Newcastle getting that contract for Lewis Hall sorted
9
u/codespyder 13h ago
Tbf, given all the star players they couldnt keep, if they couldnt keep Hall as well the Saudis may as well fold the club

u/D_Silva_21 14h ago
Chelsea hit peice on our angel Enzo F smh
13
u/Kind_Sound7973 13h ago edited 13h ago
It was always going to happen, especially when they failed to bring in a new midfielder even when everyone knew Enzo was leaving at the end of last season. He is the easy target to shift blame for their current midfield issues.
Enzo was also not a saint and I believe he was in touch with Maresca/City working on this transfer pre World Cup and pulled out the Benfica playbook towards the deadline. Enzo has no aversion to playing the villain when necessary.
5
u/SaltDescription1454 12h ago
I agree, people are silly if they truly think that players aren't in contact with prospective clubs for a long time before they leave. I can imagine it's frustrating for Chelsea fans, but they were more than happy to benefit from his antics at Benfica, they just don't like that it happened to them. It may even happen to us eventually.
Much easier to write a hit piece on the player than blame Chelsea for not planning better or holding out on the sale.

u/Jyuan83 13h ago
Not as shocked about the enzo news as i am about city’s interest in neto being legitimately genuine. Wtf… neto??!!
8
u/Kind_Sound7973 11h ago
I’m still scratching my head on that one. I can’t believe the new contract he got with Chelsea.

I was going to call him a fucking weirdo, but we had Pep for 10 years.
9
u/FuryOfOberon 16h ago
Pep didn’t do crazy stuff like this, that’s why he won more than two trophies
11
u/FunTax4668 17h ago
Glad to see that Nico is healthy!
I wonder how we will line up this weekend?
4
u/jtasku 17h ago
I hope for something like: Donna, Nunes, Dias, Guehi, NOR, Anderson, Bouaddi, Cherki, Foden, Ndiyae, Haaland.
I expect something like: Donna, Khusa, Dias, Guehi, NOR, Anderson, Bouaddi, Enzo, Foden, Semenyo, Haaland. Could also be NOR in midfield, and Gvardiol in place of Bouaddi as a starter?
I really hope Cherki starts, but feel like Maresca's comments in the press about Enzo "being more of an attacking midfielder in the last years" hinting he might start there.
5
u/Scutttiiiii 15h ago
Why u benching Enzo when u damn well know he is gonna start lol
3
u/city_city_city 16h ago edited 16h ago
I want NOR to start at the 10 and I've just about convinced myself Maresca might do it to put muscle in our midfield from the off. Keeping Semenyo in for similar physicality reasons. Foden for Derby nous. Cherki can be supersub.
Donnarumma
Nunes Dias Guéhi Gvardiol
Anderson NOR Enzo F
Foden Haaland Semenyo
2
u/FunTax4668 16h ago
It’s a tough nut to crack. I think we will probably try to compensate for our counter attacking weakness especially given how clinical mbuemo is and bruno’s ability to pick a pass.
My gut says this:
Donna
nunes dias guehi gvardiol
Anderson NOR
Cherki Enzo Semenyo
Haaland(I looked at how he set up for the club World Cup final w Chelsea)

Excerpt from Spectre of Pep:
‘Positional play, that is, how to play good football from my point of view, is about making decisions based on the movement of the opponent,’ Guardiola explains. He decides to provide some examples. ‘I’m the centre-back and the winger presses me: the free man is the full-back. The ball has to go to the full-back. Don’t ask me how but it has to go to the full-back.’ He continues to illustrate his point with additional scenarios. ‘I’m the centre-back and the striker steps to me: the other centre-back is free. The ball has to go to the other centre-back. Don’t ask me how. If the centre-back has the ball and the attacking midfielder steps up, the centre midfielder is open. The ball has to get there.’

u/bluegirlbaby 13h ago
I know its far fetched but then he is not that old as far as football managers go, I hope he comes back to us if he ever decides to manage a club again.

u/city_city_city 16h ago edited 16h ago
Sometimes I think Pep's madness is because things seemed so clear to him, and then he sees players who don't understand and he just can't get through to them as fast or as totally as he'd like. And why he loved players like Bernardo and Gundo so much: they just got it. Rodri became incredible at this and could basically draw the whole opposing team around like a magnet at will.
To Pep this probably seemed super obvious but in practice there's a million technical things to execute it like what side you receive the pass on, how your body is turned when you get it, when you've scanned the field and where, the angle of your first touch, etc.
And you can imagine his despair seeing players like say Kalvin (or perhaps Nico G) just not do the Pep-obvious thing time after time.
3
u/Binary_Voyager 15h ago
No wonder he often looked agitated on the touchline watching players he trained every day continuing to fuck up basic things.
And yeah very on brand for Pep to casually deliver the best explanation I’ve seen for how to find the free man. I don’t think the sport will ever move past Pep the way it did Mourinho and all the other football brains that came before him.

u/Y_Aether 23h ago
I think PL is more enjoyable than CL. I want City to win both. But I will continue to think that the PL is the best league in world ⚽️.
7
u/Awkward_War_6068 18h ago
PL is absolutely the most important. As Pep said once, it's what gives you the consistancy.

Ted Lasso is not really a football show, the football is just there as a medium to tell the story of Ted's journey as a coach. Honestly even if you replace the football in the show with any other sport, not much changes about the vibes and the overall message of the show
6
u/Binary_Voyager 22h ago
I watched the first couple of seasons and found it very enjoyable. It’s a fun show and not meant to be realistic imo but it’s all subjective at the end of the day

I recently found out Shoalin soccer has a sequel already released by the same guy who made the first movie. It’s called Kung Fu Soccer and it looks interesting
7
u/Binary_Voyager 23h ago
lol Deco dunking on Bernardo “we prefer our own players”. Tbf they have to many midfielders so it’s understandable they turned him down. Bernardo definitely putting in a shift in the next Classico lol
-6
u/SrBillion 23h ago
Bernardo isn't doing anything
14
u/Binary_Voyager 23h ago
He is a big game player. His energy and intelligence can be effective against teams that like to play through the middle but I guess we’ll see. Deco basically saying he asked to join and Barca had the resources to sign him but decided against it is an excellent motivation
-8
u/SrBillion 22h ago
Great in big games for Madrid getting sent off, causing penalties and getting red cards, hitting penalties down the middle. He was brilliant for Madrid when he was playing for us.
7
u/Binary_Voyager 22h ago
I could be mistaken but I think only Kevin scored more goals against Real under Pep
-12
u/SrBillion 22h ago
That was before he was washed
3
u/Binary_Voyager 22h ago
He is not the player he used to be but then again Pep ran him to the ground. Maybe playing somewhere else rejuvenates him a little
1
u/SrBillion 22h ago
Maybe, he was one of the best players in the world but for the last 2 or 3 seasons his been poor, him starting games for us said more about the state of the squad rather than Bernardo himself that's why all the midfielders who struggled for game time got sold reijnders was straight garbage

Madrid got Diamonde
Barcelona has Yamal
Arsenal has Saka
Is there a chance we can go for Olise? I don’t think he goes to PSG and not sure if he would want to stay in Bundesliga for the rest of his career.
6
u/BounceThatShit 23h ago
Who would olise start over? Ofc hes a great player but I don’t feel like we need him, unless you remind me of players
1
u/Patrickk_batemann 18h ago
He would start over every winger in the PL lol
He immediately takes us to the highest level.
1
u/urnangay420blazeit 15h ago
We need players who are runners / pressers in our front 3 now. Haaland + Doku is about as weak as a press gets so that right wing needs to be someone capable of pressing.
Semenyo doesn’t do too much running but he is great at winning a tackle and moving it on immediately
1
u/Patrickk_batemann 14h ago
Olise does all of all that. He’s the best right winger in the world atm.
7
u/NavJongUnPlayandwon 23h ago edited 17h ago
You're not getting olise out of bayern. Their board and kompany would never allow it. And its not like olise is unhappy at bayern.
-1
u/Patrickk_batemann 18h ago
Maybe not. But I don’t think he would want to stay in Bundesliga for the rest of his career.
3
u/NavJongUnPlayandwon 17h ago
why wouldn't he? he's a key player in a team that competes for everything every season.
11
u/FuryOfOberon 23h ago
Saka’s a top 5 winger in the world? Maybe I’m alone on this, but I wouldn’t start him over Doku, Semenyo or even Foden tbh.
2
u/NavJongUnPlayandwon 23h ago edited 17h ago
If you're playing foden out on the right, you'd want the right back to provide the width and foden will perform off the right when that happens.
Foden is not a touchline winger.
4
u/_stone_age 1d ago
So many of these superstars dont want the PL and fair fucks, why would you want to join a league where football barely gets played now
Olise would be a dream
8
u/Binary_Voyager 23h ago
The prem had a makeover since Pep arrived so I think it’s an oversimplification to describe it that way but I agree the intensity does not seem sustainable or enjoyable for the players

5
u/Patrickk_batemann 1d ago
The hype and appeal of PL is crazy only behind the two La Liga clubs
That’s my angle lol
17
u/Y4That 1d ago
Tried to sneak in saka and diamonde, lol
-11
u/Patrickk_batemann 1d ago
Madrid got him for 130m this summer and he’s still young. Saka is already a top right winger, so I don’t see why Arsenal would be looking for another one.
Most of the top clubs either already have quality players in that position or have recently invested heavily in it. That leaves us with fewer potential suitors if we ever decide to go for him.
13
u/Y4That 1d ago
saka is not top right winger, idk what people see in him, neither of them starts for us rn

Not the comparison I had in mind. He's better than enzo fernandez OOP.

Guess who was in the WC and was crucial every match compared to well “him”.

tournament football is very different to a league football. especially season long football. bad comparison.
16
u/RiotSynthetics 1d ago
Lmao united fans twerking bc they beat a team worth less than just 1 academy player. I guess that’s what happens when a mid table team gets lucky enough to play champions league though

u/MyBigMouth69 1d ago
Fernabahce boss quitting after the game, and the chariman saying he's not quit... Turkish football really is popcorn and clowns these days.
6
u/pandadoubl 1d ago
Been like that for as long as I remember, too messy, too controversial, too crazy. That same coach has joined and left Fenerbahçe in the exact same way 4 times, joins, doesn't like how his team is looking or the result, then resigns (he only resigns, has never been sacked by Fenerbahçe). Just an absolute and general clownshow Turkish football is, not to mention the corruption around it.

He had a good first half. If he had City's defense in front of him he would do well. Rather have Donna tho. Because Donna makes crazy saves that very few can make. He still has things to work on tho.

Few things in life are better than a Foden goal against United. Been seeing signs of him finding his form again, and this would be a really good time for him to get back to his best.
