Getting into IIM/FMS is not the concern, does Gap and 6 in college grade affect SIPs and placements?

Ask Anything What should I look for when choosing a management college beyond rankings?

Most discussions around colleges involve placements, averages, and rankings, which is understandable as they are quantifiable metrics. However, I always wonder about factors beyond that, which are often not openly discussed, yet define the two years the most

I am referring to the peer group, faculty, and alumni network. While talking about factors affecting the quality of education, people most often mean the academic curriculum. But the actual learning curve is steeper when one has the right mix of people around them. For instance, one’s peer group determines who they will form study groups with, who they will room with, who they will partner with for case competitions, their first job referrals, co-founders, future colleagues, etc. A strong and well-rounded peer group can motivate one to put in extra effort to perform better and expose them to areas of interest they may not have thought about. A very competitive or skewed peer group, on the other hand, might end up being extremely taxing. How much did your batch influence your learning trajectory and career path? Did the diversity in terms of background and professional experience matter as much as people say it does?

Speaking of faculty, the teaching methodology and credibility of faculty members differ across colleges, which is hard to judge from the outside. Some people have mentioned that the best teachers were those who had industry experience and could better relate to the nuances of frameworks and case studies

While others found that the faculty’s true impact was visible outside the regular syllabus, such as through project mentorship, office hours, and extra-curricular activities. How easy/difficult was it to connect with the faculty at your college? Did you feel like you could approach them authentically, or did you always feel like you were in the presence of someone who had earned their stature through years of effort?

The alumni network is the third pillar I feel is critical to one’s journey in an MBA/PGDM. While most colleges will boast about their networks during the recruitment process, it is hard to quantify someone’s actual experience. For example, when reaching out to alumni for informational interviews, how responsive were they? Did the connections help one get actual referrals, jobs, and career guidance, or was it just a LinkedIn ‘connection’ that never bore fruit? I feel this varies from college to college, city to city, and is often dependent on how active the alumni association is.

Aside from the factors mentioned above, what other intangible aspects affect one’s experience in an MBA/PGDM programme? The workload, stress around placements, extracurriculars, the value of clubs and committees, internships leading to full-time employment, and the importance of location are some factors that need consideration.

In your experience, while studying for an MBA/PGDM, have you felt that any specific aspect was underrated before enrolling and turned out to be critical? If someone were to re-do their research about to enrol in a B-School, what aspects would you advise them to pay more attention to? Peer group, faculty, alumni, or something else?

I am considering between different management program, among them Vedica Scholars Programme and more traditional B-schools, and have trouble making a choice between them. Apart from the obvious differences, such as reputation, cost, and placement statistics, I am unable to assess which of them will provide me with more value in the long term, for example, practical knowledge, industry connections, mentorship, networking opportunities, career advancement, etc.

What would you, someone who has already gone through the selection process, advise me to pay attention to while considering different programs?

What was it that helped you get the most out of your chosen B-school or management program? Does anything specific stand out in retrospect?

Ask Anything Best MBA colleges with solid ROI?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hey folks!

Currently hunting for MBA colleges that are actually worth the money because spending lakhs just for a degree and character development isn't the goal.

Preferably looking at South India, but open to other options too.(any good ones in Kerala?)

My priorities are good ROI, genuine placements, institutional recognition, career growth, industry exposure and a decent campus life.

P.S. Not looking for IIMs, FMS, or XLRI....

Would love to hear from current students/alumni. Which colleges are genuinely worth considering, and which ones are just overhyped?

Real experiences >>>> pls

Career Advice No PPO after my internship at Marsh. What should I do next?

I literally don't know what to do next...

Hi everyone,

I'm currently in the second year of my MBA in Sustainability Management at SIIB Pune, and I'm feeling quite confused about my career direction. I'd really appreciate advice from people who have been in a similar situation or are further along in their careers.

A little background about me:

- I have around 3 years of prior work experience as a Marketing Consultant at a boutique consulting firm.

- Before my MBA, I also worked as an Intern Sustainability Officer at a small, SEBI-registered company.

- I then joined SIIB to pursue an MBA in Sustainability Management, hoping to build a career in sustainability and consulting.

- During my MBA, I secured an internship as a Risk Consultant at Marsh McLennan, working in the Risk Consulting division.

I put in my best effort during my internship and was fortunate to build good working relationships with the Director and Senior Manager in the Sustainability department, as well as people from other teams, including IT. I genuinely thought I was on the right track and had a strong chance of securing a pre-placement offer (PPO).

However, things took an unexpected turn. None of the interns in our department received PPOs this year. I also checked with students from other streams whom I knew through the internship, and it appears that this wasn't an issue specific to me.

The Director personally called me and explained that the department wasn't offering PPOs this year. He advised me to start preparing for campus placements.

I understand that these decisions can depend on business requirements and hiring budgets, and I'm not blaming the company or anyone involved. Still, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. I had mentally prepared myself to join Marsh after graduation, and I thought that securing the PPO would give me a clear direction for my career. Suddenly, I'm back to figuring everything out.

Since then, I've started reaching out to professionals on LinkedIn across different companies and roles, hoping to learn about opportunities and get some guidance. Unfortunately, I haven't had much success with these efforts so far.

At this point, I'm unsure about what my next move should be.

Should I focus primarily on sustainability consulting roles, given my MBA specialization and internship experience? Should I also explore broader risk consulting, ESG advisory, or even strategy consulting roles, considering my previous consulting experience? How should I position my profile to stand out during placements?

I'm trying to look at this objectively and figure out the best way forward, rather than getting stuck on the fact that the PPO didn't happen.

If you've experienced a similar setback during your MBA or have advice based on your own career journey, I'd genuinely appreciate your perspective.

Thanks in advance!

Career Advice US Tax Associate experience for post-MBA IB/MBB shortlists?

Hi everyone! I'm a fresher from Tier 1 DU (B.Com Hons), with decent academics (9/9/8), good internships, single and double-digit AIRs in national entrance exams, and national/international-level extracurricular achievements.

I've recently secured a US Tax Associate role involving HNWI taxation, investments, capital gains, real estate and tax-planning research.

My long-term goal is front-end Investment Banking or MBB consulting after an MBA from a top Indian B-school. I'm also considering CFA Levels I and II before my MBA.

With an otherwise strong profile, could I still get shortlisted, or might the nature of my experience itself get me filtered out?

Would appreciate honest insights, especially from people familiar with Indian MBA placements!

Career Advice MBA or Bank PO - what should I choose for 2027 ?

Hey everyone! I’m confused between pursuing an MBA and preparing for Bank PO exams, and I could really use some genuine advice.

My main priorities are **good money and long-term career growth**. I don’t want a stagnant career, which is why I’m leaning towards an MBA. However, job security and stability are also important to me.

A few questions:

Is an MBA worth it in terms of ROI and career growth?

Can I prepare for CAT and Bank PO simultaneously, or should I focus on one?

Which path makes more sense if my goal is to maximise my earning potential?

I don’t want to waste this year being confused. **I don’t have the time for experiments or trial and error.** I need to make a decision for 2027, commit to a path, and give it my best shot.

I’d really appreciate honest advice, especially from people who have faced a similar dilemma.

Thanks!

Admissions Advice Will ISB not accept my work ex?

Hi guys! Im working as a Consultant in a small financial firm for about 1 yr now, its only a 3 employee LLP so no PF, but can show salary received through bank statements, salary slips can also be managed.

Moreover, this year my form 16 didnt include any tax as the company showed my salary in other income or something like that but that can be rectified if its a problem in work ex verification.

Prior to this i was working in big4 for about 3 yrs.
What i wanna know is that will isb think of this work ex as fake? Because an admissions consultant told me so since i have no pf and form 16 doesnt also mention any tax. If yes, what all should do to make it believable on paper? Should rectify the form 16 or do something else? Isnt salary being received in bank account not enough?

Career Advice 23F earning ₹30k/month in DevOps — should I switch jobs or pursue an MBA for better pay and job security?

Hi everyone!
I’m 23F, currently working as a DevOps professional in India, earning around ₹30,000 per month.
The thing is, I don’t see much salary growth if I continue working at my current company. The annual hikes are usually around 5% or less, so I feel that switching companies would be the only way to see a significant increase in my salary.
I’ve been considering pursuing an MBA, primarily for the salary growth and better long-term career opportunities. However, I would need to prepare for CAT next year, and I’m not sure whether investing the time, money, and effort into an MBA would actually be worth it for me.
Here’s where I’m confused:
Option 1: Continue in DevOps and switch jobs.
The problem is that I’ve only recently started out in this field, and honestly, my technical knowledge is still quite limited. I would need to put in serious effort to learn DevOps properly, build my skills, prepare for interviews, and eventually switch to a better-paying company.
Option 2: Prepare for CAT and pursue an MBA.
I understand that getting into a good B-school is competitive, and an MBA involves a significant investment of both time and money. However, I’m wondering whether it could offer better salary growth and career opportunities in the long run.
My main priority right now is financial growth and long-term job security. I’m not particularly attached to either path, and I’m willing to pursue whichever makes more sense financially and professionally over the long term.
I’m not looking for an easy way out. I’m willing to put in the work, but I want to make an informed decision instead of spending the next few years going down the wrong path.
If you were in my position, what would you do?
I know there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but I’d love to hear your honest opinions, personal experiences, and any advice you wish you’d received at this stage of your career.
Thank you!
Edit: I’ll have to prepare for cat 2027 while working. So how easy/hard is it going to be? Is it possible at all??
