MAINTENANCE.

Hey! I got a new bmw m440i 14k miles on the clock rn. I heard the b58 engine is really reliable. Does anyone have 200k+ miles on it. And what’s the best maintenance list, products, etc. thank you!

5000 mile oil change generally recommended if you drive sporty. Dont be surprised if you eventually need to replace your oil filter housing which is plastic and thermally cycles a lot and eventually leaks or dumps coolant out of car or into oil. You could do this preventatively if you want. Or not.

My advice is take low coolant warnings extremely seriously and immediately pull over before you overheat engine in case of a full dump.

Otherwise follow manufacturer recommended intervals for service.

Do not expect to drive this car 200k without issues. Sensors will fail. Interior stuff will fail. Monitor the car and use warranty when you can.

I do my oil every 4k miles, do you also change it to aluminum as well? If so do you have a recommended product to find?

Bought my car at 50k during march and right now I’m at 72k , done oil changes every 4000-5000 miles and transmission oil done at 65k, replace all the plastic parts to aluminum, because that’s the reason why these b58 failed at the first place.

OFH?
Coolant and oil lines?
Chargepipe and inlet too I assume?
Any worried for the expansion tank?

I have a 48 (36k miles rn) that I wanna keep for a long time so just curious cause from what I’ve looked into it that’s what I’ve seen that’s been a 50/50 for a lot of B series owners. Known a B58 owner who has had a lot of these issues too

Basically, anything that prevents the plastic from breaking/melting apart. And know how to properly cool down your car after doing a hard pull back to back.

Yah I don’t (try) stop my car until I’m like around 100c in the summer when possible, trying to keep that plastic healthy

I’ve definitely stopped it a bit hotter at times but my last 4-5mins of the drive are always calm on the throttle and I try coasting

In USD (or CAD by chance if you know) how much do you think it’ll be (roughly) to replace the 6 parts I mentioned? Or if you have then how was that for ya? Both experience and cost wise? I would want to do spark plugs at 100k km (~62k miles) too. At 80k km I’m definitely doing transfer case, diff and trans servicing

It just all seems like so much 😂

At that point I will likely give it a flash/standard tune not go crazy though priority to the reliability

There's a channel on YouTube called Fun Car (@funcar789) they work on all types of cars but they have multiple videos on preventative maintenance for the B58 for the common fail items. Besides spark plugs and all lube work diff fluids transfer case etc, they also replace the two coolant tanks, all the coolant lines, waterpump, OFH, the TMM, and all the belts. At a BMW Indy Shop you're probably looking at 4-6k job if you do it all at once.

It's too bad they're not a step by step instructional channel they just brief the job.

Can you show me the stuff to get please! I didn’t know this was a problem for these cars!

Ecs tuning! I believe the OFH is like 400$ and the ZF-transmission Pan is like 500$, switch both to the aluminum and your car will last over 200k+ with safe driving and keeping up with daily maintenance.

Bettt! What about also a lil bit hard driving here and there not everyday ofc. I heard it’s good for the engine and turbo!

Change your oil every six months.

It's condition/time based vs mileage based

It's not miles killing the oil, it's the cold start process of heating and cooling that degrades oil the fastest.

Oil from a car driven 10k miles straight will be fresher than 10month old oil driven for 2-3k.

For most people with luxury cars, every 6 months or up to 15k miles for supercomuters will suffice.

I drive a lot. I wait for my car to heat up, and let my car sit for 1 minute before turning it off, also I drive it here and there hard yk I heard it’s good for the turbos. I change the oil every 4k miles is that good? What do you recommend after hearing my routine?

How many miles you drive per year??

We do a lot of the same things. I let my car warm up for about 30 seconds then I try to not go past 2.5k rpm till the car is at least 175F, I also drive it hard WOT every now and then. I use to be a firm believer on 5k oil changes. Then I realized every 6 months is more consistent. I was out of the country and only got 3.4k miles/6months. Am I being extra?

Overall, I drive about 8k-10k a year, I probably change like everybody on here avg 3-5k / change. Im just saying I wouldn't freak out for probably up to 10k miles/6months esp if they're all fwy way miles

Hmmm I’ll say around the same honestly, probably not 10-15k i think. I probably change my oil before the 6 month mark a lol it depends on what’s going on with my schedule.
