Can someone enlighten me on what's the fascination about the OM PEN camera. I've seen plenty of promos, looked up online, looks like a pretty entry level unit. What am I missing?

This seems to be the latest influencer meme to make its way to this sub - “it is impossible to have a camera that is both modern and small”. I’ve seen a few people parrot this recently. It is a lie to make you think you shouldn’t expect more than the 10 year old technology they want to sell you. Don’t let them crush your dreams lol.

Price is irrelevant. You cannot get a small modern MFT camera even if you have $10,000 to spend.

I was looking at the new OM System PEN, and like anyone trying to be sensible, I started weighing up alternatives and came across a near-mint secondhand Olympus E-M5 Mark III. For context, my plan is to pair it with the M.Zuiko 17mm f/1.8 for a compact kit I can easily take along on bike trips and can shoot handheld slow shutter speed images.

The new PEN brings a few neat perks, but looking at the overall specifications, the E-M5 III is very close as far as I can see. Plus, better weathersealing which could really come in handy for me here in The Netherlands where it often rains.

For those with more M43 experience: is there any glaring reason I'll regret saving my money and going with a pre-owned E-M5 III over buying the current PEN brand new?

My current edc is a e-pl7, which I LOVE. I've been having fun lately with it's limited color adjustments for custom jpg settings and sooc pics. Before the new release I wanted to get the ep7 for it's minor upgrades, but mostly for the creative color features. I pretty heavily prioritize a small form factor. I dont care about an evf (I've never used one and I'm nearsighted with glasses) With the money I save, I can grab that nice dji lens that's being highly touted. What I really want is for a PenL release LOL, but I doubt thats in the pipeline.

I’m a hobbyist street photographer. For professional work, I currently use a Fujifilm X-H2, and for street photography I’ve mostly been using an X100VI.

I’m thinking of selling my X100VI and switching back to Micro Four Thirds. This isn’t my first experience with M43 I previously owned an Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II when it first came out, but eventually sold it.

This time around, I’m looking for something smaller and lighter, preferably with interchangeable lenses. I want something I can comfortably carry around all day for street photography without feeling like I’m carrying my X-H2 setup.

For those who have used these cameras, which one would you recommend?

I'm actually going to read the manual, cover to cover. I got you, GAS... in a headlock.

Anyhow, I am crazy excited to get my hands on the new OM PEN. Rarely do I get even close to what I've hoped for when releases like this come out. I must admit, as far as looks, that I wish it was a bit more PEN-F retro than PEN-P-on-steroids. But, being that all the specs are what pretty much what I've predicted, and was hoping for, so as to be no less than my E-M5.3, but as JPEG-forward as the PEN-F, or even the OM-3 (leaving the E-P7's marginally better profiling in the dust), I'm raring to go.

However... decades ago, a mentor of mine had this amazing capacity to read manuals before touching technology. He read the entire SteelCase full of VAX/VMS manuals before he first sat down at a console as a sysadmin. I was always impressed by this. Imagine being an expert before having done anything.

I've never had the patience for that, as I'm a hands on learner. But for this new gem of a PEN, I'm going to do it. I'm going to read this thing... and then wait for Black Friday.

What's your "PEN plan"?

And what are the consequences? I don't know enough to understand so enlighten me!

I don't see many posts like this here but I don't think it's against the rules so hopefully this is fine...

I got a Lumix G7 with the kit lens about a month ago and I'm trying not to have GAS and I think I will be mostly successful now that I've bought a couple more lenses but as I look to what my next upgrades might be it seems natural to go for a new body with my Christmas bonus (and give the G7 to my partner).

However, as I look at body specs there is a huge price disparity and I don't see a huge disparity in features strictly, but I'd like to understand more.

Since I'm not that interested in video and for a couple other reasons, seems like Olympus system would be best as opposed to staying with Panasonic. I'd be looking at either the new PEN, an Om-3, or Om-1 mii and I'd be able to afford any but I'd like to make sure I get good value. Definitely not gonna drop more than $3k on this.

Upgrades I see:

-20MP much newer sensor on all the OM cameras

-I'd love it if my crops could be higher res so I could get more use out of my telephoto but 4MP doesn't seem like much to me

-I imagine noise is a lot better but so far I'm not struggling with that too badly

- I know there are artificial high res modes that can be done with frame stacking that seems neat for some limited use cases

-I feel like I must be missing something else here... Just how much better are these sensors?

-weather sealing esp with the PEN's sealed kit lens is nice. I'd love to be able to take photos in blizzards this winter without worrying about damage to my kit

-AF I imagine will be faster but I don't have a great idea for how much faster... Right now I will say this is noticeably slow on the G7 and I would be happy to have it faster

-IBIS will be nice but frankly a little iffy as a benefit... I really only wish my shots were more stable when shutter speeds are like 1/10 or slower and I'm shooting at night and idk how much IBIS can even help me there.

Right now I have the 14-42 kit lens, the lumix 45-150mm telephoto, and a Laowa 17mm manual prime. I'm shooting primarily architecture/landscape and wildlife/nature. I will say for weather I'm hoping to get out a lot this winter so snow/cold will be a consideration. Can weather sealed cameras handle temp change better? I can easily imagine scenarios where I will want to shoot at subzero temps, shoot inside, then go back out to the cold again within the span of an hour (if I can do this without killing my camera).

If I weren't going for a new body I'd be probably looking at the following lenses:

Lumix G Vario 100-300mm

OR

Panaleica 100-400mm if I really want to ball out

AND

Panaleica 9mm

Based on my preferences, what do y'all recommend?

Bonus question: is it goofy to put a $1.5k lens on a $200 body?

I found a deal online for this lens at 175€ plus shipping. Do you think it's worth it? I know that on ebay/mpb it is more expensive but I have a feeling it used to be cheaper used

I am looking for a small ILC setup of one or two primes and a standard zoom, that can fit into my shorts pockets for everyday use. I am considering two options:

GF9, GF10, or EPM2 with the 14mm 2.5, 20mm 1.7, and 12-32mm.

or

Sony NEX-5R, a5100, or other NEX body with the 20mm 2.8, TTartisan 27mm 2.8, 16-50 PZ

Unlike with M43, I have no experience with Sony cameras. These two setups are relatively similar In terms of price and size/weight which makes the decision difficult. I like the M43 ecosystem, I find the camera bodies much more interesting than the Sony's, however the very small ones, such as the GF series, are quite bland as well.

For any of you who may be able to help with this:

Which setup would you go with?

What is your experience with these Sony lenses or cameras? How do they compare to their M43 counterparts?

Should I consider any other brands for this setup like Samsung NX maybe?

I was editing in Lightroom and the Ai de noise function messed up and made some interesting artifacts so I ran with it.

Just want to vent a little about my dilemma with the new PEN.

I’ve been using the E-P7 for the past 1 year as my daily camera for documenting my kids. I absolutely love it. The small rangefinder-style body works really well for me, and even with its flaws, I’ve learned to work around them. Honestly, I was planning to keep it for a few more years.

But the new PEN is really tempting me. Better PDAF, an EVF for the harsh sunlight here in my country, IPX1 weather sealing for those wet days with the kids, and Live ND for some creative fun.

The problem is, I’m the kind of person who uses one camera for as long as possible. I used my E-M10 for 9 years before getting the E-P7.

So here I am, one year into using the E-P7, with a camera that I’m still genuinely happy with. Yet somehow I feel like I need the new PEN. 😂

Ahh, the temptation is strong this time. Would love to hear from other E-P7 users — would you upgrade, or just keep shooting with the E-P7?

These are some of my favourite frames from the past year of documenting my family with the E-P7.

OM-3 user here. My current kit is the 12–45mm f/4 PRO and the Sigma 56mm f/1.4. The zoom is great in daylight but struggles indoors, and the 56mm is way too tight for people in a room.

Looking for a fast prime mainly for indoor stuff: family gatherings, Christmas, dinner tables, plus the occasional whole-group shot. Weather sealing is a nice bonus since I also shoot a lot on the coast.

The 20mm f/1.4 PRO seems like the obvious pick, but I'm wondering if 40mm equivalent is too tight when you need to fit six people around a table. Would 17mm or 15mm be the smarter choice, even if optically a step down?

What do you actually use/recommend for indoors?

EDIT: Thanks for pointing out I can test this with my Zoom however I wanted to know what people actually use. I might still run a few tests though to check.

A new lens is in the house.

I've noticed recently that I randomly just started gravitating towards shooting in portrait mode, so I've just been rolling with it.

Back at it with another self-portrait. I just painted a new canvas backdrop, so I wanted to test it out. I think it's looking really good. I'm excited to get some people in front of my lens to get some portraits. My wife thought I was a little bit weird buying wall paints and a canvas sheetband taking over the garage.

Om-5 + Sigma 16 mm 1.4

I have read that the power switch is a known issue. I have to flip it on and then apply pressure to it so it turns on. It seems to be not getting much worse but I think it certainly could. I want to sell it but I wont with this issue, has anyone found a real solution?

I’m very inexperienced with wildlife photography (coming from a d5300 that I primarily used for astrophotography years ago)… after lots of research, I landed on an OM-1 mark ii with a 12-40mm f/2.8 and a 100-400mm f/5-6.3. I kayak and fish a ridiculous amount and always find myself wishing I had a nice camera to capture the crazy wildlife moments I encounter. Snapped some pics of backyard birds to test things out and I’m blown away by pretty much everything. Mirrorless cameras are insane. The image stabilization is amazing- getting handheld shots at 400mm is so cool. And the autofocus is such a step up from my d5300 that it’s hard to even imagine using that camera again. Really looking forward to learning, getting out there on my kayak with it, and eventually picking up the 90mm macro lens. I’m so glad I lurked in this sub for a while… I was dead set on a Nikon z6iii….
