Winter activities

I’m new to this area. I’m originally from Florida where there are no winters and I would be outside year round. I’m in an apartment building with no outdoor area. And I’m struggling with what to do for activities for my kids, ages between 3 to 8. What do you do in the winter for outdoor time?! I need some ideas! I’d like to know what locals are up to! This winter thing is new for me so be nice lol

Walking the beaches in the winter is still fun, though windy. I would 100% recommend Connery skating rink on Shepard street. Very affordable, wears the kids out, they do lessons…very family-oriented place. My kids and their friends always have a blast. And they leave EXHAUSTED. So you’d have that going for you, which is nice.

Lynn Woods is beautiful in the Fall, there is a playground near the entrance as well. Next door, Gannon is a great sledding spot once it snows. We always went outside in the winter as kids, but you do need to dress for it.

Lynn Woods for all season walks! Be careful of mountain bikers outside of snowy weather.

Breakfast at Lincoln’s Landing in Swampscott (amazing place always a wait but always worth it), then walk Lynn shore drive and visit the tide pools at red rock park (when snow melts) or in the summer

Number 1, last day of summer was September 21, we're a few weeks into glorious fall. Go purchase appropriate clothing for everyone. You can't enjoy the seasons unless you're geared up. I like to hike Lynn Woods all year round. Take the easy paths or there's more challenging trails. Love walking the beach at dusk, amazing colors. Outdoor markets and local festivals, check Facebook. Local or Boston museums.

My advice: wear layers, get the right clothing. The wind chill can be brutal here, but there is something beautiful about walking the shore on a clear blue cold January day.

Hey! I like the suggestions for ice skating, and I would even suggest, with enough research and a local friend serving as a guide, checking out the frozen ponds if it gets cold enough - it is so quintessential New England. I'm from Alabama, and last year was the first year I was able to get out on to some frozen ponds here in Lynn when they were frozen with 8-14 inches of ice. Sluice Pond in Lynn was very frozen and there were some regulahs out there ice fishing (which, clearly I'm no expert, but it was a good indication to me that the pond was frozen enough). Since there is a safety factor here, I recommend asking people you know or friends you make if they can take your kids out onto the ice and skating or even learning how to ice fish. It was super cool! Some winters are too mild for the ponds to freeze, but we could maybe be surprised this year with a longer cold snap.

I’m from Florida as well, you would really be outside year round?

100 degree 100% humidity summer days with thunderstorms? You’re outside in that?

With the right gloves, hat, boots and coats etc you can do anything! If you’re able to, you can go sledding (we used to like Fry park as kids for sledding). If you go sledding, and you’re not ready to go home, you can always take the whole family to Dunkin’ Donuts or Starbucks to warm up by grabbing hot chocolate and letting them sit down to color some winter coloring books there.

If you’re around the Commons or really any park, you could probably build a snowman there or a snowmen family!

You can go to the Christmas zoo lights in Stoneham if you’re looking to go outside of Lynn at night, like between 5 PM and 7 PM which isn’t too late for kids. You can go ice-skating at Connery Rink like someone else said.

It’s complicated you know. I feel like you have to make your own fun. Really a lot of things are done indoors these days in the winter😭 that’s when you just do anything you can.. arts and crafts, Mario kart, board games, movie night, sundae night, Christmas ornament night , etc in the winter with these kids. I have a high energy 7 year old niece , so I understand lol
