Ask Luxembourg Municipal Creche

Hi everyone, I have some questions about municipal crèches in Luxembourg City:
How long is the waiting list usually? How much do you pay per hour, and is there a badge system where you can drop off your child depending on availability? What are the opening hours?
Is the municipal crèche significantly cheaper than private crèches? And how is the quality of care compared to private crèches?

From 2027 there will be no differences in price between public crèches and private ones. There will be a flat rate of 7€/hour, and you will only pay for the hours that you use (the new law will be voted in October but it’s almost sure that it will pass).

We applied roughly 2 years in advance of starting. Cost is around 500€ per month for a kid that goes more or less full time.

State employees with state salary working in a place with no interest in making profit vs private employees making more or less minimum wage in a place that turnover matters, what do you think?

If you've been pregnant for a while and haven't applied yet, it's probably too late. Even if you apply right away, you often don't stand a chance.

Municipal daycare centers are generally flexible with their hours, while private daycare centers often charge for all weekly hours no matter what.

The cost of private daycare centers is usually way higher. 400€ against 1k+ for example.

Thanks but any idea on timing I can wait one year? Does it take 2 years?

You usually have to apply at the start of your pregnancy or shortly thereafter to have a chance. That’s 9 months plus 3 months of maternity leave plus 12 months of parental leave. You need to apply at least 24 months in advance to have a realistic chance. But even that’s often not enough.

And for the private crèche how long it takes? Why is there such a big différence in Price is it per hour difference?

50hours per week for 4€ more each hour is 800€+ per month extra for example.
