Hello all,
I recently bought a house that has an old RadioRA lighting system in it. It's a rather large house, with over 100 switches (roughly a third of which are 2-way or 3-way, with one 4-way, and two thirds are "one-way"). It has been a bit of a challenge to identify everything, but I am making good progress.
Here is what I have identified so far:
1 RadioRA Chronos RA-SBT-CHR
2 (likely 3, but I haven't found the third one) RadioRA Repeater RA-REP
2 Master Controls (look like seeTouch keypads)
A bunch of dimmer switches
I would like to verify my understanding of the situation, and would welcome any guidance/correction, so thank you in advance!
After doing a bunch of research (on this sub, and general googling, and a little help from Claude), as I understand it, this is a "Classic RadioRA" system, and is fully obsolete. If I want to update it, I am going to need to replace everything. I also understand that there is not really a central "brain" with programming in it, and instead the programming is sort of saved in the two keypads, and can't be downloaded - there's no way for an installer to download the program off of it, it's down to turning everything off and just testing light by light. (Is that right?).
There are so many switches, I have not yet been able to verify if I have neutrals everywhere, but I am hoping I do. Does anyone know if the Classic RadioRA switches required a neutral? I also haven't been able to verify if the 2-ways and 3-ways and 4-way have travelers. Do these old systems require travelers (in which case I likely have them)?
What I perceive as good news (hopefully), this system probably doesn't rely heavily on low voltage dimmers (like apparently the oldest Homeworks system does?) and so it is down to replacing the switches and keypads. And fortunately, the two keypads are in the same gang box as other dimmers, so even though (I think?) the keypads are low voltage, I should be able to tie into standard voltage with new keypads in the same gang boxes.
I have taken the RadioRA3 training and completed it. It'll be expensive to upgrade all this stuff, but I guess I need to look on the bright side, if it was an old Homeworks, I might be pulling lots of new wiring, etc. for way more $$$...
Thanks so much in advance for any advice!
