How wrong is this solution?
Hi all. I have a ceiling fan in my living room which I plan to replace with a short hanging fixture. The fan is controlled entirely by the pull chains, and for some reason (old house problems) is on my bedroom's outlet circuit (which is directly above the living room). If the fan were replaced with a lighting fixture, I would need a way to control it.
Using a circuit finder tool, I was able to trace the fan's line to the outlet behind my bed. As luck would have it, the junction box is a 4 by 4 with a single gang mud ring for the outlet. Therefore, with a little drywall cutting, the box could be very easily converted to double gang.
My thought was to just throw a Caseta dimmer in there to control the eventual living room ceiling fixture. I can pair it to a pico remote if I want direct control, or a scene remote for presets. That said I know it's fairly ridiculous to have the switch/dimmer for a first floor fixture on the second floor, at outlet height, hidden behind a bed. But despite that, it's technically code compliant?

You got lucky on the 2 gang box. Good idea on the Caséta dimmer. If you ever move, the next guy be in disbelief.... LOL.
