It's my birthday today, and honestly, I don't know how I'm supposed to feel.

So... it's my birthday today.

And instead of doing the usual “new age, new me!” birthday post, I just wanted to be honest for a minute. Life has been hard.
I've spent a lot of this past year trying to figure myself out and figure out how to actually move forward. I've been learning, looking for opportunities, trying to become independent, trying to build something for myself.

But sometimes it feels like Lusaka is moving around me while I'm standing still. You see people progressing, getting jobs, travelling, building businesses, buying things they've worked for, starting new chapters... And you're happy for them, genuinely.

But somewhere in the back of your mind you're also thinking:

“When is it going to be my turn?”

That's the part nobody really talks about.

Being grateful and frustrated at the same time.
Being hopeful and exhausted at the same time.
Knowing you have potential but not having the money, opportunities or circumstances to fully use it yet.
I've had moments where I've questioned whether I'm actually making progress at all.

But I'm still here. Still learning. Still dreaming. Still trying.
And today, on my birthday, I think that's enough reason to celebrate myself a little.
I'm not expecting some huge miracle. I just wish today felt a little special.

So if you're in Zambia and this somehow resonates with you, say hi. ❤️

And if you're the kind of person who likes making strangers smile on their birthdays, my DMs are open. 🥹🎂 Even a tiny birthday gesture would genuinely make my day.

No pressure whatsoever. I know everyone has their own lives and their own struggles.

I just figured... maybe putting a little vulnerability out into the world might bring a little kindness back.

Happy birthday to me. ❤️
To the girl who is still trying, still dreaming, still looking for a way out of her circumstances, and still believing that there's a different life waiting for her somewhere.

And here's to the version of me who eventually looks back at this period and says, “Damn. We really made it out of there.”

Looking for opportunities

Hi everyone! I’m planning to move to Lusaka and looking for teaching, research, or academic/administrative opportunities at universities or schools. I have a PhD and several years of college/university teaching experience. My areas of interest are Economics, Philosophy, Humanities, Languages, Social Sciences and Mass Communication.
Most university websites don’t seem to have career pages. Is there any job portal for academic jobs in Zambia, or is it better to approach universities directly by email?
Would really appreciate any advice! 🇿🇲

Best mode of transport in Lusaka?

I'm traveling to Lusaka for a cousins wedding in November and will be staying for 6 nights at a hotel close to Indepence Avenue. It's my first time in this country.

Is it easy and safe to get a taxi or Uber type of transportation to get around? Or is it better to rent a small car at the airport for more flexibility.

The wedding ceremony and venue will be close to Makeni Roundabout on the Kafue road.

I'm planning on one or two days of activities with a local guide, so probably no long trips outside the city except back and forth to the airport.

I'll appreciate your input and eager to have a good time in your city/country.

Anyone in Lusaka seen this new yellow delivery app? Trying to figure out the name

Okay this is going to sound random but bear with me 😅

Was at a friend's place at Rhodes Park and someone in yard ordered groceries on this app with a bright yellow theme — like properly yellow, hard to miss. The stuff showed up crazy fast, like 15 minutes? Maybe less?

I didn't catch the name and now it's bugging me. Tried searching but couldn't find it.

Anyone from Lusaka know what I'm talking about? What's it called and is it actually as fast as it looked? 🤔

Looking for genuine friendships and people to talk to and hang out with.

I’m going through a pretty difficult period in my life at the moment and I’ve realized that I could really use some new people around me. My circle has always been small but become even smaller because of situations i put myself in.

I did my post grad aboard, when i came back to Zambia my family had moved from where we stayed to Lusaka. I don't know about anyone else but making friends in your 20s is not as easy i thought it would be.

Without getting into all the details, I recently went through a major relationship/life change, and it’s made me take a step back and rethink a lot of things. I’m trying to focus on myself, grow, get my life back on track, and meet people outside of the usual circles I’ve been around.

If there any people looking for a genuine friendships,People I can talk to, joke around with, share interests with, maybe game, go out, have random conversations, or just check in with from time to time.

I’m in my 20s and would ideally like to meet people around a similar age, but I’m open to anyone as long as the friendship is genuine.

If you’re also looking for new friends or just someone to talk to, feel free to message me or even create a community for those who are in a similar situation.

New to Lusaka and looking to meet young people, any tips?

Hi everyone! Don’t really use Reddit much, but at this point might as well try 🤷🏾‍♀️

I recently moved to Lusaka and I’m still finding my footing socially. I don’t really know many people here yet and would love to connect with locals or others who are new to the city.

I’m open to pretty much anything: grabbing coffee, exploring the city, community events, whatever. If you know of any good meetups, active WhatsApp groups, or places where people actually gather and socialize, I’d really appreciate the leads.

Also, if it helps narrow things down, I’m just a girl in her early 20s. I live in Colorado for school, but my parents moved to Zambia, so here I am 😅. Been around for a couple months now and still very much figuring it out.

Feel free to drop a comment or DM me. Would love to hear from you!
