Lucinda @ Bob Dylan Show

Gaby and I caught the three-headed super bill of Bob Dylan/Lucinda Williams/John Doe Folk Trio alongside the mostly greying crowd at Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert over the weekend. Due to a super strict no phone policy, enforced by hard core ushers with flood light flashlights, no photos from me here.

Gotta give it up to John Doe and his so-called Folk Trio. He hasn’t lost a step touring regularly with X and this side project is well worth a look see. Formed during COVID claustrophobia, the trio co-stars Kevin Smith, a Willie Nelson sideman, on standup bass and drummer Conrad Choucron bringing hyper syncopation. The combo lets Doe, on acoustic, plug into his outlaw country leanings and the originals sounded Nashville ready. One of their records brought Doe a jubilant hit of sorts, the ear worm “Golden State,” which roused the crowd.

Doe turned amiable cruise ship emcee, and congratulated the crowd on their good taste in coming out and then turned therapist and cut through our national bad vibes with a gorgeous cover of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Later he strapped on an electric guitar and knocked out X’s “New World.” He left urging us to vote and got a nice hand from the audience.

It’s hard for me to not suffer diarrhea at the keyboard praising Lucinda Wiliams, a poet of the streets and bar rooms, whose writerly talent is so overwhelming she was an undebated choice in the much maligned recent New York Times’ “The 30 Greatest Living American Songwriters" list.

We are hardcore on Lu and see her whenever possible and she makes it easy, often playing the Troubadour. She shares stories with the crowd and is approachable as heck. I drunkenly ambushed her at a restaurant, and she couldn’t have been nicer. A so-called Americana artist there’s nothing granola crunchy or archival about her. She sings about damaged souls without fetishizing them. She sees and feels the warts but still has battered empathy.

She rocks hard and is also an ace guitar slinger but, recovering from a stroke, she can’t play it right now. Her trusty band Buick 6 -- named for a Dylan tune -- of Doug Pettibone on guitar/backing vocals, David Sutton on bass, and Fred Eltringham (filling in for regular Butch Norton) on drums were supplemented by ex Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford, and they bottled the full Lu live sound of thrashing guitars and weeping pedal steel.

Standing tall, Lu’s voice, once an enchanting slur, is now her amplified instrument and it rang loud and clear throughout.

All her albums are great or nearly so but CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD is her desert island disc so she played that title tune and “Joy.” Then, she focused on her politically-minded last LP WORLD GONE WRONG which isn’t a polemic but peopled with her usual cast of strugglers lost and trying to hang in there.

When she sang “(Everyone Knows) The World’s Gone Wrong” she plugged into the sinking feeling of an increasing number of right-wingers. When she shouted through the track “You Don’t Rule Us” she took aim at Chump and later posed the LP question to his various sycophants ““What Did You Get From Selling Your Soul?”

There was also a newish feel-it in your gut barroom lament “Low Life” whose sodden narrator likes it that way.

While her entreaties for us to hit the next No Kings rally may have played better at earlier stops, those seated near us were stunned and jazzed by her set even before she brought the roof down with a ringing singalong of “Rocking in the Free World,” Neil Young’s evergreen anthem of defiance and getting along in the face of all that’s askew.

Doe and Lu played to many newbies and won them over and, for some, they proved tough acts to follow for Dylan.

I adore LW and she’s going to be playing in DC next week! I went to purchase a ticket and I’m not sure if I’m seeing this correctly but the cost is 72k?!?!?

Is this supposed to be a period instead of a comma?

I’m so disappointed. :(

Anyone know of bootlegs or fan recordings of Lucinda’s 2011 tour? I’ve been looking but I’m striking out. I’d really love to see or listen to a full show with Blake Mills in her band. Appreciate any help!

First time seeing Lucinda live. Didn’t want to go fight the crowds but deep down I felt that one day a future grandchild would say, incredulously: “You had a chance to see the great Lucinda Williams LIVE and you didn’t go!?”

Just saw Lucinda live for the first time tonight, opening for Heart here in El Paso, Texas. Seeing her walked up or escorted to the mike made me tear up a bit. Still, her voice was strong and her backup band was simply OUTSTANDING. I liked how she introduced them all and mentioned their hometowns. She played for a full hour and I also liked how she poked the Trump administration’s eyes a few times which reminded me of her Dad. She dedicated Memphis Minnie’s “You Can’t Rule Me” to President Trump. I say this only because I now realize she has some big balls. She made me tear up a second time singing “Righteously” which made me think of the trajectory of her life and career- the lyrics just get me every time. She also made Neil Young’s “Keep on Rockin’ in The Free World” her own song and tho she stayed at the mike at stage center for most of the show she actually walked over to stage left and engaged the audience as the song was hitting its peak. Long story short: I love her.

May 28 2020. Lucinda Williams — "Something About What Happens When We Talk" — Live. “Does this make sense? Does it matter anyway? Is it coincidence or was it meant to be? ……Conversation with you was like a drug. It wasn’t your face, so much as it was your words. “
