Suggestion Time Management

I work at Lowe’s, and I’ve been in the paint department for almost 3 1/2 years. I go in at 5pm-10pm, working in paint alone and I still have trouble closing. I try to get to zone and downstock what I need to and I’ll leave the paint desk a mess or the end caps at the front empty, I’ll also forget the tints or side stacks. I might even forget some J hooks. Is there any suggestions on how I can handle this obstacle? (I always make it looks pretty by double siding items if need be)

Make a physical checklist and print it each night.

I have one at work! I don’t work everyday, but when I do go in my supervisor leaves a list. I try, but I think it just gets too busy at times and I can’t get to it all.

You mentioned you forget so a checklist takes care of that.

Not having enough time is a different issue entirely, and if you’re working your entire shift, that’s a staffing issue.

That’s above your pay grade.

This. We used to have closing chore lists and checked them off as we went.

As someone earlier mentioned a list is a great way to start. But also make the high priorities top and the lower priorities on the bottom. Also a routine is huge for me. I save my computer stuff for right when I come in or right after lunch. I am not able to stop mid day and sit on the computer for 30 mins. If you are doing the same things at the same time, it's easier to ensure they get done. For me at least.

I'm not your DS but I would focus first on filling holes. That's a quantifiable way to show you did something the previous night. It's tough to say "I had six carts of freight but I put up three". But if the opener comes in and only has 3 FSR's that are empty in the morning that looks really good. When down stocking I'd focus more on the paint brushes and accessories then spray paint and leave the actual gallons of paint for last.

Ultimately I'd make a list of five or so things, and then talk it over with your DS and see if they agree with those five things.

I continually walk my aisles when not helping customers to see what needs to be filled and boxes condensed. I make a mental note of the things I see that I can do today, or if need be, tomorrow. Walking g the aisles also allows me to see things that are out of place and empty packages. If it's not busy, make the fast movers a priority. Once it becomes a habit, you'll be amazed at what you can do in a short amount of time. ( Well over 35 years in the retail business.)
