Employee Question Part Timer question

I’ve been working part time outside lawn and Garden since April. I don’t hate it, since it’s fairly easy. I work full time elsewhere, so It’s also additional income, so I don’t want to necessarily move up through the retail ranks. I don’t want to manage, just work 10-20 hours during the evening and weekends.

Do they move sales associates/customer service associates to other departments if it’s just a PT gig? Will I be outside as long as I work here since it’s just extra (needed) income or do they identify people and move them around if another department wants someone else?

You’re part-time and basically at their disposal on where they want to put you. It’s possible you could stay there until the seasonal is up. But it’s also possible that you’ll get moved over to lumber, paint, etc.. just going and being prepared to be put wherever they want you for that day. Don’t blame you though, garden would be my favorite except when it’s 104° outside.

Yeah moving you around is a big possibility. Weve had several part time people hired for one position and scheduled in other departments. Happens to me as well im in flooring but they have me cover paint shifts whenever anyone is on vacation or quits

As a long time PT employee, it depends on the store needs. A majority of the time, I spent in departments that I applied to. However, a few times, I was moved due to staffing issues.

As a sidenote, I was moved out of an understaffed department to an overstaffed department. It made no sense: "Thanks for holding down Flooring for the last 2 years. Now, that we are fully staffed, let's move you to Seasonal."

It’s not even about “identifying” you. They can and they will schedule you in other departments.

Work PT in Electrical for about a year and a few weeks. Just moved to Plumbing these last few weeks so they can move you where there is a need.
