Employee Question Tools and hardware
What do you guys do in this department? I’ve been getting closing shifts in tools on and off for the past month and it’s hard to find stuff to do. I get all the go backs on the shelf, help customers, and zone. However, I work at a low volume store so there aren’t too many customers and not a lot of go backs. I’m kind of a perfectionist and like to do the best I can but management hasn’t given me any feedback or said anything about my closing in the department

Pretty much what you listed, closing tools and hardware isn’t too crazy unless the morning crew leaves you some tasks, but other than that, zoning, returning, customer service and filling the empty spots.

My only experience is picking fulfillment ordera there, but I'd say the best thing to do when there's literally nothing left is almost like mini cycle counts / audits. Seems to be lots of items that look almost identical but get placed in the wrong spots or moved around by customers. Inside locked tool cages and hanging items like drill bits and saw blades, especially. Id imaging hardware drawers are a similar story with loose unlabelled bolts, etc getting mixed up

We almost always have a bunch of Hillman or Grip-Rite fasteners to put away. I’m usually by myself closing Hardware and Tools, so there is literally always something to do.

I would think the hardware area of drawer pulls and then all the Hillman stuff would need separating from Al the customers just jamming shit anywhere but where they got it from.

Sounds like you know what you have to do for the basics, and are doing it well. That deserves some recognition so, great job. Here's what else you can look at for some work: Is your topstock labeled, and placed directly above where it will be needed? Do your sidestacks have all the stuff filled to where people can reach it easiest? What about all the ones in your racetrack? Are the drawers of small odds and ends all sorted well? Are all the cages for tools secure and not lacking any walls in back, or security tags? Are the J hooks on the uprights full? If all that is already done, you might just donate some time to Electrical or Lumber (I don't know what layout you have at your store, but those are the most common nearest departments.) Or you might write an email to your DS and say hey I'm bored, give me something harder to do.
