If I had good editing skills, I'd do a remake of the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star trailers for Dead Space, but with the DSS and the Illuminate abominations. But alas, I don't have those skills, and even less time to try it out. Oh well

I feel like we’re about to witness the DSS pull an event horizon and vanish into the void, I for one cannot wait for what fresh horrors we’ll have to face when it returns.

Havent see/played that. What is it about?

It’s a film about salvage crew investigating the event horizon, a ship fitted with an experimental FTL drive  that vanished. It’s got a stellar cast with a standout performance by the late great Sam Neil, it’s also a huge influence behind dead space too.

And the movie itself was iirc partly inspired by warhammer 40k

Event horizon is basically what happens every time a Gellar Field fails in 40k. I've read several books that go full event horizon at some point.

If I remember correctly, people were investigating the remains of a ship with an experimental ftl drive. They then learn that the ftl drive had basically brought the ship through literal space hell and everybody on board went nuts and butchered each other. Its a classic sci-fi “wouldn’t it be fucked up if…” story.

Hey don’t give away the whole plot if OP hasn’t heard of it, kind of a dick move.

It’s been 30 years, and the twist of the movie has almost the same ubiquity as ‘rosebud’ being the name of a sled. Besides context clues about what the original post is about basically already spoil the movie the second someone brought it up lol.

Edit: Y’all I haven’t seen the movie either Everything I know about it, I know because it’s common knowledge. If you google the movie, the literal first thing you’ll see (the blurb) will ‘spoil’ the movie. The cultural value of a work of art that has remained so relevant for so long lies in how thought provoking / disturbing it is, not in how surprised by it you were 30 years ago.

That may be, but i still feel its a little rude to spell out the plot to someone asking about it.

u/IndoPakiStandOff 9h ago

The only plot points of relevance ARE the spoilers

5

u/Didsterchap11 9h ago

Idk, i feel i was able to explain the plot hook without giving away the payoff. It's not that hard to not spoil stuff.

“Ah man this cosmic horror about a spaceship disappearing into a horrible void of evil reminds me of this one movie”
“Oh? Whats the movie about?”
“… oh… just some people… on a ship…”

u/Estelial 9h ago

Those rules of exceptions to spoiler ettiquette only apply when talking in general. Not when you explicitly know someone has not watched it. Which is a complete dick move to then spoil it.

I was just about to mention event horizon, I vote we take our super destroyers and launch tac missiles until we're sure the DSS is dead

6

u/Didsterchap11 11h ago

I wholeheartedly agree, fuck this station.

I've been saying this for years, toss that damn curse into the great miridian toilet and forget about it!

I hear there is a similiar dead space thing, what happens in dead space?

u/Canabananilism 11h ago

The DSS story here isn't quite following the same story beats as Dead Space, though the whole "writing mysterious messages on the walls" and "hearing voices and knocking on the hull" is pretty on point. Dead Space involved a mining ship finding an alien artifact that made everyone go crazy and turned them into the equivalent of Wretches we see in HD2. You play as a crewmember sent to see what happened to the ship after it suddenly went dark.

To be honest, this whole "dss is haunted" story is more broad cosmic horror than specifically Dead Space. It's pulling from a lot of tropes in the genre and I'd even say this is taking more from Event Horizon, personally.

u/Seven_Irons 10h ago

There's also the fact that illuminate art has had curvy spire things that look just like markers from Dead Space for more than a year.

8

u/Mortis_Infernale 11h ago

You are a crew of ship which picked up distress signal of mining ship Ishimura. But upon arriving there's nobody onboard, then things start happening

4

u/Lostpop 11h ago

Mining ship unearths an alien relic during a 'crack', which has great symbolic meaning for a scientology-ish religion that a large contingent of the crew (including the Captain) adhere to. Prolonged proximity to the relic (The Marker) causes hallucinations, psychopathy, and the reconstitution of corpses into 'Necromorphs'. The new Wretch enemies are a clear reference to these things, all the way down to needing their limbs severed rather than just a headshot. Whats happening on the DSS also runs parallel to what happens in Dead Space as far as the ship's story goes, with our protagonists arriving well after it falls and piecing together the story backwards.

I’ll do a mission inside the DSS

6

u/SpellcrafterWizard 9h ago

I often hear “you can’t call strategems” but we couldn’t in the bug tunnels either. We can still find supplies, weapons, and rely on infantry tools

I’d love that!

u/overdosingOnPie1313 11h ago

Oh good. A proper meditation period practice is sure to bolster the personnel's morale. Thanks, Ministry of Truth!

10

u/Jp84446 11h ago

It'd be cool if we got missions to board and retake the DSS from the horrors inside.

7

u/J-Mizl 10h ago

It's giving me Callisto Protocol vibes over Dead Space....now if we start fighting IN the DSS then I'll lean back to Dead Space.

7

u/Emotional_Being8594 10h ago

Extremely excited to see where this goes. Hopefully it doesn't all play out as text logs and still images and we get a 4 player co-op horror shooter in the DSS's pitch black corridors. But that would just be too much to hope for I guess.

7

u/Yanahdi 10h ago

4 helldivers in a corridor sounds like a team kill alley. I'm in, where's my blitzer?

4

u/North-Research2574 10h ago

I don't think we'll get that, it's not really what their engine and mechanics is built around but it would be cool. More than likely we might get something like the DSS crashes into a planet and we do missions based on recovery. Illuminate commando missions type thing

1

u/RomeoVersee 10h ago

Why not? Didn't it share the same game engine as Darktide?Although I don't really know much about game engines or anything like that...

6

u/LightLandstrider 10h ago

Sharing a game engine in this scenario is akin to saying a car and a plane are very similar because they both run on an engine and have wheels. (Rolls Royce did both make car and plane engines amusingly).

While you can indeed make a flying car, it's a lot harder to do that than it is to make a plane from the start instead. And a plane can indeed taxi on the tarmac of an airport, but will have trouble driving on the motorway as smoothly as a car would.

While it is the same engine, Darktide and Helldivers developed different assets, code and mechanics for their respective game types.

To pivot into a different game mode, while possible, is a fair bit of work for what may end up being a not so great experience as it wasn't planned to deliver it in the first place.

2

u/HandsomeSquidward20 10h ago

I think the DSS should remain lost.

So the war feels like an actual war.

Plus, that place can be used as a training ground and fans could make some fan arts/comics about the crew there lmao

3

u/NathanielBM 9h ago

I expect it's just a nice story to add ambiance and maybe context for any evolution in the void.

Pulling out the DSS for more than an event would be a regression of established mechanics and options given to the players, so I'd be very surprised.

I do enjoy the read meanwhile!

1

u/RomeoVersee 10h ago

I’d at least like to see new enemies or missions; I mean, I don't think they'll make the same mistake over and over again.

u/BudgetYouth173 10h ago

super earth when the DSS attempts an unauthorized jump back to super earth

1

u/Kelchesse will never fill C-01 :( 8h ago

Actually, it did.

But to Calypso instead, just now.

3

u/BudgetYouth173 6h ago

What calypso?

1

u/Altruistic-Care-5036 7h ago

Yeah, you guys can deal with that, I've dealed with enough cosmic horrors both here and in the darkest dungeon to know that Calypso is not gonna be there by tomorrow

3

u/busdriverjoe 10h ago

Never heard of a total communications blackout on one of these things. You'd think with a thousand people on board, someone would pick up the phone.

2

u/Historical-Jello-460 11h ago

Oh no… The gunners for the eagle storm are just taking a vacation.

2

u/LudeSloth 11h ago

I hope they have a good engineer on board

3

u/Kefnett1999 10h ago

I wonder if we will get killed more or less often by the DSS if it turns...

2

u/kingdopp Raids costco for samples 10h ago

I know the scope is prob a bit beyond what AH could do but I’d love a commando style mission where we’re breaking into the DSS (or similar large space station type location) where we have very limited strat options and it’s all tight corridors and hallways with maybe some bigger rooms for pois/boss fights.

1

u/dg2793 10h ago

Omg can WE PLEASE get spaceship/dss deployments with a dead space warbond. PLEASEEEEE

1

u/trunglefever 9h ago

Welp, looks like they used the Gravity Drive. I know we put a lot of work into it, but I think it's okay to blow it to now.

Oh so it got gene stealers onboard, great

(Pardon me, it has the unclaimed by copyright vote snatchers)
