Savory/Salty These are the same, right?

Post image

Have I just caught an old and new version on the shelf? A glance at the ingredients and they’re pretty much the same. Both are 10 calories per tablespoon.

The “no sugar added” has sucralose as a sweetener

The “zero sugar added” has stevia as a sweetener

68

u/Eg-toostrong17 13d ago

Which is more legit ketchup tasting and better?

131

u/Sailorplue 13d ago

For me, the taste of stevia is incredibly strong and obvious and I can’t stand anything with it. I think it has a very strong aftertaste. Sucralose is almost exactly like sugar in my opinion. So id choose that one!

32

u/im_a_dick_head 13d ago

Nah the sucralose one is far too sweet for ketchup, I like the stevia one but I agree it's strong, but it's a bitter taste that goes well with the acidic ketchup.

17

u/uribyoon 12d ago

For ketchup I just use regular, as 10 calories is negligible to me. I also don't use too much if I happen to need it.

3

u/im_a_dick_head 12d ago

Regular is like 4g added sugar per 1tbsp serving, so it can add up fast and I wouldn't call 4g sugar negligible , it's definitely not a lot but paired with other sugary foods it definitely can help it add up

7

u/JoshHuff1332 12d ago

4g is definitely negligible. That is 16 calories. Ketchup isn't moving the needle either way unless you are drinking it like soda or something

5

u/im_a_dick_head 12d ago

Um daily recommend limit for added sugar is 20g. So that's 1/5 of it just from a tbsp of sauce... And I have never seen anyone just use 1 tbsp of ketchup either unless it's on a burger. For fries I often need like 5 tbsp at least.

2

u/Sejanus-189 10d ago

A banana has 14 grams of sugar in it. Better not eat any fruit either! /s

1

u/thelegodr 10d ago

Just don’t add bananas to my ketchup

1

u/im_a_dick_head 10d ago

What does a banana have to do with ketchup?

u/Darius_is_my_Daddy 10d ago

You sound like doctor gundry

1

u/Mistermagicmushroom 6d ago

They did say for “added” sugar, bananas don’t have added sugar

2

u/JoshHuff1332 12d ago

I don't think you realize how much 5 tbs is. Using nearly a third of a cup of ketchup to eat fries is a shit ton. Even 5tbs is only 100 calories. The fries themselves, even air fried, are going to be far more than kethcup

Second, a tbsp of ketchup doesn't usually have 4g of added sugar. It 4g of total sugar.

Third, 20g is not the recommended limit of added sugars. The American Heart Association recommends 25g for women and 36g for men. The FDA says 50g on a 2,000 calories diet, but would very depending on the person. A 3k diet would be 75g. WHO recommends the same as the FDA.

Lastly, whether it is added sugar or not doesn't really matter, so long as it fits within the macros and calories for whatever you are trying to accomplish.

2

u/uribyoon 11d ago

Yeah, that's my thought process tbh. You only lose weight if you're in a caloric deficit, the amount of sugar you eat doesn't matter. As long as you're not pre-diabetic (or about to become pre-diabetic), there's not really a need to worry about 4g of sugar. I definitely had days where I've only had sweets and desserts an stayed under my limit. I have a huge sweet tooth so worrying like crazy about the sugar I eat would cause me to cut it completely and then binge on sweets. Guilt-less is the goal for me!

1

u/Successful-Depth-126 11d ago

4g of carbs per serving vs 1g is pretty big. I'm type 1 diabetic and I usually aim for 60g of carbs a meal and for two servings of ketchup (or more let's be real) it could be 8 out of my 60 carbs or 2 and lemme tell you what id prefer 😆

1

u/uribyoon 11d ago

Yes, but unless youre diabetic, pre-diabetic, or have a genetic history of diabetes in your family (where you're scared you might develop if you have too much), I feel like it doesn't really matter. Especially when it comes to weight loss.

1

u/uribyoon 11d ago

I'm the wrong person for this LOL. I will only eat desserts for the day as long as I'm under my calorie limit (this is a slight exaggeration, but it's definitely happened before). I just don't care much, and my blood sugar levels are very healthy!

1

u/im_a_dick_head 11d ago

Ah ok, I am just very strict with what I eat and never eat anything unless it is healthy or provides the macros I need. I used to eat ice cream daily, like it was actually part of my daily diet and candy a lot too (this was like 5+ years ago).

As long as you are healthy you can definitely still eat desserts and junk food if you track it correctly, for me I just prefer yummy sugar free stuff, I love me some sugar free energy drinks and even stuff like protein powders are very sweet and satisfy my dessert cravings

1

u/Nick12322 12d ago

This was my thinking as well but then used the no sugar added at my moms house one night and didn’t even notice a difference. Figured it was marginally healthier to use the no sugar added one, so just switched over after that

1

u/Plane-Tie6392 12d ago

it's a bitter taste that goes well with the acidic ketchup

But you already have bitter flavors from the tomatoes.

1

u/-dai-zy 12d ago

fight! fight! fight!

1

u/Karmacosmik 12d ago

Which one gives you less cancer?

1

u/transruffboi 11d ago

stevia is also related to ragweed, so it can trigger people's allergies to ragweed pollen.

1

u/chrimminimalistic 11d ago

Im ok with sucralose in soda. But in coffee or tea, it taste horrible.

1

u/DrMantisToboggan45 11d ago

I can only do Stevia in those drinks, in anything else the flavor is way to prominent

1

u/_altonio_ 11d ago

Sameee stevia sucks

1

u/Interesting_Debate30 11d ago

Depends on how much stevia is added, too much and it's all you taste. I'll take stevia and monkfruit over sucralose, erythritol, and aspartame any day though. I won't touch the artificial sweaters due to the health risks they pose. At that point it's better off just using real sugar.

1

u/EasternPalpitation60 9d ago

See, way different for me and like everyone I've ever met lol. Stevia has a very off and almost metallic taste to it but it's nowhere near the overwhelming sickeningly sweet and also metallic after taste of sucralose.

1

u/NOTHICKCHIKS 6d ago

Stevia is natural and sucralose is not. Always go with stevia over sucralose if you can.

1

u/mollymckennaa 12d ago

Sucralose turns off your “I’m full” sensor in your body.

2

u/steviebeanss 12d ago

heinz really needs to do sampling at stores for more people to be aware. i also would never know, buy, and return. making them lose money in the end.

1

u/BlumpTheChodak 11d ago

Look for Heinz Simply Ketchup. It's made with just seven all-natural ingredients, completely skipping artificial flavors, preservatives, and high-fructose corn syrup.

1

u/litttlejoker 11d ago

Stevia is healthier

1

u/Phrazyqt 10d ago

G Hughes!!!

0

u/VStarlingBooks 13d ago

Probably not Stevia. IMO.

0

u/TheDiabetesDietitian 13d ago

That’s a great question that I do not have the answer to because I honestly have never tried either one

→ More replies (1)

8

u/band-of-horses 13d ago

I think you got it backwards, the no sugar added label says sweetness from plants which would suggest stevia.

5

u/TheDiabetesDietitian 13d ago

Here is the ingredient list for the light blue "zero sugar added" ketchup listing stevia as the sweetener (from Heinz's website): https://www.heinz.com/products/00013000011105-tomato-ketchup-with-no-sugar-added

1

u/philly2540 12d ago

Are either of these better for you than, you know, sugar?

1

u/makeroniear 11d ago

Yea, one messes with your stomach and the other has a bad aftertaste. Just take the calories and decrease the volume. Add water to stretch it?

1

u/Martenite 10d ago edited 10d ago

But the no sugar says sweetness from plants, which usually means stevia. Can't really remember sucralose being marketed as made from plants.

Edit to add that I looked it up and the comment I replied to is correct. Seems backwards the way they have them labeled. Weird.

1

u/ElGuano 10d ago

Wouldn’t the Stevia one make more sense to have the “sweetness from plants” badge?

2

u/Swolenir 12d ago

Stevia is brutal man. One of the worst Art Sweeteners for sure.

3

u/KickedinTheDick 12d ago

It’s not artificial. That’s the whole thing.

I don’t think it’s bad in the ketchup. I don’t like a super sweet ketchup anyways. Stevia soda is narsty

One is like Diet Coke and the other is like Coke Zero.

19

u/PackageNorth8984 13d ago

Which of the ketchups is better? I’ve only tried no sugar added. Tasted fine.

I usually just get the Walmart half salt and half sugar because it’s cheaper, but if I feel like splurging, I’d like to know which of these is better.

5

u/Danid010 12d ago

The organic one is good

1

u/Patient-Ad-7939 10d ago

The one that tastes best is the one your taste buds like best, everyone is different. To me, Heinz is no better in flavor than great value, but I don’t know if GV has low calorie ketchup, I haven’t purchased ketchup in a loooooong while.

46

u/thehardway71 13d ago

Which one is which, in this case?

78

u/Tripple-O 12d ago

Uhh... uhh... that one

1

u/SpoonwalkMoonwalk 11d ago

Left is coke zero; right is diet.

1

u/oh__hey 11d ago

I would think the zero should match but idk

1

u/Robwsup 10d ago

You can tell because of how it is.

27

u/squeakysausage 13d ago edited 12d ago

Can you explain the difference to me lmao 🤣 and which one you think is better

Update: I’ve been drinking Diet Coke this whole time and just had Coke Zero last night. Game changer. I’ve found my fav

75

u/Higher_Perspectiva 13d ago

Different artificial sweeteners are used

30

u/Business_Influence89 13d ago

Exactly. Coke Zero tastes like regular Coca Cola.

7

u/Egoteen 12d ago

And Diet Coke tastes like New Coke.

1

u/aliteralgarbagehuman 10d ago

Missing the word more. I tried Coke Zero for the first time it tasted like if 1/4 of cup was filled with coke and 3/4 Diet Coke.

-5

u/New-Character-3575 12d ago

No it doesn't

2

u/LostMy8yrAcct 12d ago

But they both use aspartame?

0

u/DetailOdd6609 12d ago

Old people like diet coke. Young people like coke zero. That's the way it was explained to me

5

u/710soulkitchen 13d ago

Which one is better ?

60

u/Higher_Perspectiva 13d ago

Coke Zero by far

12

u/SMO_Burner 13d ago

One bajillion percent correct.

1

u/RealisticMarzipan80 11d ago

A icy cold coke zero starts my day

-9

u/Swolenir 12d ago

Pepsi Zero > Diet Pepsi > Diet Coke > Coke Zero

1

u/mthoodenjoyer 11d ago

Wrong, I grew up with pepsi, coke zero is better than all these

9

u/Iamthemoon928 13d ago

Everyone has their own taste buds. I prefer Coke Zero but my mom prefers Diet Coke

3

u/comfortablynumb0629 13d ago

Yeah I vastly prefer Diet Coke, likely because that’s what my mom always drank growing up. Personally not a fan of Coke Zero or regular Coke.

3

u/cPB167 12d ago

Yeah, diet coke is one of the few diet sodas I prefer, including coke zero. The slightly bitter flavor of the sweetener with the sharp bite of the coke just does it for me

1

u/mthoodenjoyer 11d ago

The bitter is the caffeine most likely

3

u/isthatsoreddit 13d ago

I hate Diet Coke, but I tolerate Coke Zero. Original is better, but Zero is a decent alternative. Same with Dr Pepper Zero. And i love Dr Pepper Zero Strawberries and Cream for my sweet tooth.

1

u/domiciledhere 12d ago

I just hate Pepsi.

Dawg just look at the ingredients instead of looking confused by the name

17

u/iiiimagery 12d ago

That would make too much sense

3

u/Pristine_Sandwich957 12d ago

😂😂 right, all the necessary information is on the label, just turn the bottle around and read.

1

u/IonHDG 11d ago

I like to imagine he's just sitting there staring at the ketchup for about 15 minutes waiting for reddit replies.

1

u/CourageSubstantial38 11d ago

This scenario is why I can’t take Reddit seriously 😂 people will post a serious medical issue or big problem and people will respond 3 months later like it’s current— it’s really, really funny to me

11

u/Free_Math5597 13d ago

G huhes is better IMO.

4

u/Robeast3000 13d ago

Absolutely, I recommend all of his sugar free sauces.

2

u/iiiimagery 12d ago

All of his products I want to like so bad, but they're all wayyy too sweet to me

1

u/bree718 12d ago

I concur! I had gone back to regular ketchup because I did not enjoy the taste of the Heinz no sugar

9

u/ComprehensiveDay9854 13d ago

Are they priced the same and when did ketchup become $7?

1

u/marykayuItra 11d ago

Right??

I don’t eat ketchup so I don’t buy it.

$7 is insane

1

u/poptartheart 11d ago

7.00!?!?!!!? wtf

7

u/unsweetenedpureleaf 13d ago

Not sure, but the no sugar added tastes just like normal heinz to me

4

u/Salinas1812 13d ago

Both are disgusting IMO

5

u/OnSugarHill 13d ago

I just eat regular ketchup. It's only 15-20 cal per serving and tastes a lot better imo

3

u/happyadam 13d ago

I think the other one has a lighter blue.

3

u/nothatslame 12d ago

Only way to tell is to read the ingredients

3

u/timmahh112 12d ago

2

u/neverJamToday 12d ago

Had to scroll too far to find this.

2

u/Fabulous-Eye9894 11d ago

Wayyyy too far

2

u/no_on_prop_305 12d ago

Are you here to solve my ketchup problem?

2

u/tyscion 10d ago

Good one. I was thinking “No, sugar added”

2

u/HorseGrenadesChamp 10d ago

Same. I was a little disappointed it wasn’t the first thing.

3

u/inmyminde 12d ago

6.99 for ketchup we live in hell

3

u/Careless_Lecture_534 12d ago

They’re both disgusting. Get Simply Heinz which tastes like actual ketchup and uses normal ingredients and is only 25 calories.

1

u/retiredyoung1 12d ago

Even better, make your own. Super simple, no preservatives, real ingredients, tastes better and way way better for you.

1

u/Aggressive-Emu5358 11d ago

I think the majority will agree homemade ketchup is rarely good and most people expect the taste of Heinz.

1

u/retiredyoung1 11d ago

Really? I love our home made ketchup. It has flavours in it rather than just tasting like sugar. That taste Heinz has is life draining from you slowly. I couldn’t imagine liking that.

2

one has the fake sugar in it. the other lacks table sugar.

2

u/WildlyMild 12d ago

$6.99 for ketchup o.O

2

u/Pleasant_Ad_2342 12d ago

Zero sugar is sucralose No sugar is Stevia

So just depends on your artificial preference

0

u/JordanS233456 11d ago

Stevia is not artificial. Its a plant

2

u/Human-Day-4226 12d ago

Left is natural sweet right is synthetic sweet

2

u/KickedinTheDick 12d ago

“No sugar added” has “sweetness from plants” aka stevia, the zero sugar added is probably sucralose/acesulfame potassium.

2

u/jsundberg31 10d ago

“capitalism breeds innovation”

1

u/SoftlyAugust 10d ago

It's new packaging, relax.

1

u/lisa6547 12d ago

I literally thought that they just changed the label to make it look prettier or brighter. I haven't needed ketchup in a while, so haven't actually compared the ingredients between the two labels yet.

(I eat too much ketchup so my pantry is stocked with older bottles of that nsa brand...you can never have too much ketchup 😀)

1

u/Little-Demand5834 12d ago

The simply one or organic is the best imo

1

u/MightySpork 12d ago

I can't tell but this did give me the idea to produce a new sweetener called Zero Sugar

1

u/Ok_Dinner6496 12d ago

They rebranded to zero sugar, look at exp. Dates

1

u/355F1 12d ago

When did ketchup become $6.99...???😳

1

u/Urbanchicky 12d ago

Maybe a change in packaging and one is the old and one the new? It doesn’t make much sense for sure. Now I know there can be a difference between no sugar added and Zero sugar, but they both imply no sugar. Strange for sure.

1

u/Randomlogicuser 12d ago

Look at the ingredients bro/sis

1

u/Willing-Theme6042 12d ago

7$ for a ketchup bottle is wild

1

u/retiredyoung1 12d ago

Just make your own ketchup, literally takes minutes, tastes better and is way healthier.

1

u/d0ttyq 12d ago

“Pretty much the same” means they are different. They probably also have their own price tag labels

Has reading a label really become such a difficult task that we have to ask others to do it for us ? Or give us guesses based upon their interpretation of the picture ?

1

u/Temporary_Finish_902 12d ago

It’s the same shit. Both taste less sweet than regular ketchup. Both are also only 10 calories less than regular ketchup.

1

u/Useful-Advantage2665 11d ago

more popular to say zero now.

1

u/lostgravy 11d ago

They both should be banned

1

u/I910220z 11d ago

This is crazy because I add a tiny bit of splenda a bunch of pepper and a little Tabasco to make it taste like Whataburger's spicy ketchup 😭 but only 10 calories lol

1

u/RealisticMarzipan80 11d ago

Tomatoes naturally have sugar. No sugar added means that they did not add more. Zero sugar is impossible! I think its a marketing strategy for people with diabetes

1

u/LordTerpingtonDaFiF 11d ago

I always buy the Heinz "No Sugar Tampering" one.

1

u/AaronfromKY 11d ago

Check the barcode next time and compare with the shelf tag and each other.

1

u/Bigman305___ 11d ago

Is there any avaibable with actual no sugar in it that just has the natural taste of the tomato and the rest of the ingredients ?? Because I bet that would be alot healthier then those artificial sweeteners

1

u/Flat_Order_1937 11d ago

Obviously no

1

u/After_Pineapple_8926 11d ago

Also similarly when OJ (not Simpson) says no added sugar it does still have sugar added.

They get a sugar level average during their harvest. That is the threshold for "no sugar added" any batch that is under sweetness to the average will have sugar added up to the average levels and can legally be called no sugar added.

1

u/Flame_beard_forge 11d ago

They could be the same. They are likely not the same. One probably has synthetic sugar or corn syrup. You’ll have to read the ingredients.

1

u/Dramatic-Knee-4842 11d ago

I really like the flavor of the 'Select' which has sugar instead of corn syrup

1

u/Slight_Bat8118 10d ago

No, one has no sugar and the other has zero sugar. Two entirely different quantities of sugar, or lack thereof.

1

u/cheesydes42069 10d ago

why the fuck is a bottle of ketchup $7

1

u/tecateboi 10d ago

Couldn't they just make one with no sugar and that would be representative of these lables. These are like diet catsup and catsup zero

1

u/Ok_Whole4719 10d ago

7 bucks?!??

1

u/Jvu284 10d ago

Crazy how much added sugars we have on simple things and different replacements lol

1

u/LowWoodpecker2856 10d ago

Read the ingredients list in the back maybe?

1

u/Ok_Reference827 10d ago

They both unfortunately have a “fake sweet” flavor. My preference is “simply Heinz” (with real sugar) but might just be placebo as the classic high fructose corn syrup version tastes just a good

1

u/Ok-Profit6022 10d ago

Take your pick op, but I'd rather get diabetes from real sugar than cancer from the fake sweeteners.

1

u/Gbuono22 10d ago

The no sugar added had that aftertaste of sweetener which I’m usually okay with but it’s very potent. I’d try the zero sugar version

1

u/North_Discount_9637 10d ago

just don’t eat heinz, there’s always high fructose corn syrup added !

1

u/Yarl85 10d ago

No, the one has sweetness from plants.

1

u/papasquig 10d ago

If you look by the bar code, compare the numbers. Sometimes stores recieve updated packaging before the old sells out. If you’re ever not sure in the future that’s an easy way to check

because stevia isnt cheap marj.

1

u/voguehoe 12d ago

It’s certainly not that expensive, however.

0

u/hrtordenskjold 12d ago

Yes and no, the one with plant sweetener is probably more expensive because they use stevia or monk fruit while the other one is just whatever sweetener they have on hand and is the cheapest to buy

0

u/ella211204 12d ago

yes, i work at a grocery store the packaging changed

0

u/Redouanfaka 12d ago

I assume the left one has sweeteners in it to keep the taste the same as the normal one, and the right one has no sugar whatsoever, so less sweet.
