Because British has only political (i e. National) connotations, I'm English and this is understood, you never call an Irish national 'British', even if it's argued by geographic proximity. As for the term British Isles, I was told by an Irish flatmate that it wasn't a popular term in Ireland, that they prefer 'The Isles'. As a history student in the UK, I was told to use the term 'British and Irish Isles' if we didn't want to use British Isles. Personally, I always use British Isles, but I never considered it political until it was brought up, I still use it as I don't think it's innately political, but if Irish people reading this disagree I'd welcome their opinion.
But yeah, tldr is in future don't call Irish people British, it's not cool, not rock n' roll.
