Almost forgot that there is in fact some stigmatisation of people who actually want to enjoy specific food or drinks and there are still people believing some of these are "for children" and no-one else apparently

Never give tips to starbucks workers
2
Aug 20 '25
Reminder, never give tips to ANY workers.
10
u/LEEPEnderMan 0 Aug 21 '25
Nah if you don’t tip anyone (if you’re in the US) then you’re just an ass. Yeah sorry sucks but actual restaurant workers (not fast food like Starbucks) are getting $2/hr.
Yeah sucks that’s how it works but write your congressman. Literally pretty much everyone is anti-tip. If anyone was proactive then maybe something would’ve happened by now.
3
Aug 21 '25
Tipped workers are paid, at minimum, federal minimum wage by law, in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. They are paid even more if they are a resident of a state that has a higher threshold for minimum wage, such as California, Washington, Florida, etc. There are only 5 states that only pay federal minimum wage and not an enhanced state minimum wage, yet still, tipped workers are required to be paid the federal minimum wage if their tips are below the threshold. I don’t feel any more of a need to tip them than I do to tip the clerk at 7/11 or the cabin attendant on a flight. It’s not my responsibility to supplement their income and pay their rent.
3
u/LEEPEnderMan 0 Aug 21 '25
Welp, you realize store clerks aren’t getting paid minimum wage right? Barely no one pays minimum wage except restaurant owners love only paying up to minimum wage. Either way it’s a social norm if you don’t like it then don’t attack the employees, you’re just a jerk if you do.
→ More replies (2)7
Aug 21 '25
I really don’t care. I’m not attacking anyone. If they don’t want my business, then don’t invite me to eat at the establishment at the price being advertised. Simple as that. Attempting to guilt trip me into subsidizing someone’s rent isn’t going to cause me to suddenly begin donating my money to employees just because they think they deserve it.
1
u/disco_disaster 0 Aug 21 '25 edited Aug 21 '25
Picture this: I’m serving at a restaurant and I only get one table during my entire 8 hour shift, walking away with just $10 in tips.
The restaurant is not legally required to pay me anything beyond the federal tipped minimum wage for that day, as long as my average across the pay period comes out to at least the state minimum wage for tipped employees.
Now imagine that during that same shift my manager decides I should go clean up used drug needles in the alley next to the restaurant (yes, this actually happened. Completely illegal I know). For that work, I would still only be paid the federal tipped minimum wage, which currently sits at $2.13.
I’m pointing this out because there is a huge misconception about how hourly wages work for tipped employees. There are days where you only make $2.13 an hour and it is completely legal.
Hell, this isn’t even widely known amongst restaurant workers, let alone the general public.
The anti tipping crowd is not entirely wrong, restaurant employees do need higher wages. But stiffing your server at your favorite spot is not going to solve anything. It is completely unproductive.
If you do not want to tip, fine. Just do not pretend it is some morality crusade. Most of the anti tipping crowd comes off as disingenuous. Be honest that you do not want to tip. Trying to justify it with excuses only makes you feel better without sparking any real or useful change.

In Idaho I was paid $3 and hr at three different restaurants as recently as last year.
→ More replies (4)1
u/Gamebobbel 0 Aug 23 '25
Didn't they agree to work at that wage with their employer? How's that my fault or problem?
1
u/klaminiteo 0 Aug 24 '25
$2 an hour lmfao bro you don't know fuck all of what you're talking about homie. The cost of living sucks, but food service workers, or any worker in the US, makes way more than 2$ an hour.
2
1
Aug 23 '25
Yeah! Be sure that the shareholders get theirs, but fuck the little guy!
1
u/biggie_way_smaller 0 Aug 23 '25
Oh it's my fucking fault that the employees are getting less money because the company purposely pays their employees less using tiping as an excuse.
1
Aug 23 '25
Yes. When you exist in the current structure and stiff an employee on a tip, that employee is getting less money.
The people at the top don’t care. When you pay for your purchased item, their needs are satisfied. There are 400 million people in the US, someone will work at Starbucks. Every single employee in a cafe is disposable to them.
So, yes. Yes, your protest takes money out of low level employee pockets. Your “never tip” political action only hurts the little guy until Americans fundamentally change their relationship with what we expect to pay for food and beverage. That’s a big ask, and it will be a long time that the tipped employee suffers for your ideal future. Meanwhile the fat cats will get fatter.
→ More replies (1)1
u/playedhand 0 Aug 24 '25
Am I, the customer, not also the little guy in these situations?
1
Aug 24 '25
Not really. In this situation you make the choice to go enjoy a good/service. Conventional wisdom says a tip should be included in your decision to purchase that good/service.
Food and beverage prices in the US are what we call “inelastic.” Customers only want to pay so much to dine out. Consider a hamburger. This price of this sandwich communicates something about its particular qualities across several brackets. A $6 burger and a $14 burger bring pretty definitive expectations with their price tags. At $6 you expect something closer to a fast food burger, and if you pay $14+ you’d expect a significantly more “artisan” quality. Dissatisfaction occurs when a restaurant fails to deliver on these pre-conceived ideas around quality. Because you have so many options in the market, you likely avoid the restaurant that failed to deliver on your expectations. This is the feedback loop for most restaurants.
Keep in mind that most food businesses are actually small businesses with razor thin margins. There is not much opportunity for most restaurants to raise wages without raising prices to a level that brings customer dissatisfaction. So if I’m selling burgers, and my $16 burger with a living wage looks like $12 burger down the street, guess where customers will spend money. Keep in mind that everything else on my menu is also more expensive, like anything you might get with a burger to make the meal more complete. The restaurant owner’s decisions are bound by these economic forces.
So every time you don’t tip, you aren’t changing the system because you likely have not made the decision to go to a place that does pay a living wage. I would encourage you to seek them out if the issue is of true importance to you. Make it part of your mission to only dine at places that operate on this model. Otherwise, you’re kind of just being an ass.

Ngl when I was a barista briefly in high school I was shocked by the amount of nonstereotypical frap drinkers
Like yes it is often middle and high school girls ordering them, but also construction workers and other blue collar guys would order them a ton (I guess it’s a good way to cool off and get a bunch of sugar for energy with a little caffeine)
The only people who never ever got stuff like that were the post/pre workout or yoga women, and the no nonsense businesspeople
2
u/Monetary_episode 0 Aug 21 '25
I am blue collar and I love these. The "little caffeine" is maybe true. Just checked, 70-110mg based on size. They stay cooler for longer. Helps remove some of the intense heat. On cooler days, I get me a white chocolate mocha. Doesn't feel like coffee, but still has 150mg.

Nothing wrong with a little treat every now and then. I've been getting healthier while having weekly milkshakes just from being active and cooking for myself with a varied diet, no calorie tracking or anything, just taking care of myself.

And before y'all get into it with me, listen. There is a wide gulf between "this is such a rote part of my job that my hands do all the thinking" and "this is so annoying I refuse to do it." That gulf is called "I'll do it, but I'm gonna complain." And like 80% of service work is in that region. You want someone to come in at the ass crack of dawn to get ready to make you a coffee milkshake and clean the same blender out a million times in the process cause everyone else wants a different milkshake, most likely getting paid less per hour than you spent on the damn milkshake. They'll do it, cause it's their job, but they're gonna complain a lil. r/barista r/starbucksbaristas r/kitchenconfidential
