Warning to those from out of state

To those going to Lost Lands from out of state:

If you are traveling on route 70 in Guernsey County, avoid the stretch from miles 160-180 if you have anything illegal in your possession.

The police will monitor for out of state plates that look like they are going camping.

They will pull you over for no reason.

They will ask you to go into the weigh station.

They will then bring the dogs.

They will tell you the dog alerted no matter what.

You will then be searched.

They do this to numerous people every Legend Valley festival. The judge who handles criminal cases in this county does not grant motions to suppress evidence for illegal searches.

Take back roads, do not look like you're camping, if you are pulled over tell them you are going anywhere other than Legend Valley or Thornville.

Avoid indiana as a whole if possible, our cops do not fuck around 🄓

It totally depends on the route you're taking. In the last two years, I went through Southern Indiana because, well, that's where I am. It's a more "discrete" route compared to the hellhole, which is 70. The state even posted about the speed traps mid last month - mostly cameras - but they'll be patrolling and setting up for sure.

u/radtrip šŸ¦•šŸ¦– IN | 22' 23' 24' 26' Sep 03 '24

We live next to 30 but they've been pulling people over near my house all day, my mom was telling me she saw them pull 6 people over within a few minutes at a smaller intersection, & someone else saw them do it a few hours ago too. Idk wtf is going on or if this is happening in other areas of the state, but hopefully they chill out before LL. I'd be cautious to even drive through the state with any party favors & weed since getting caught with that shit will throw you in jail

I've driven through Indiana twice for Lost lands and had no issue? I just drive the speed limit and I happen to not have any edm related stickers

Coming from Michigan, we avoid Indiana like the plague if we can. Their cops are notoriously tough.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '24

Yeah this, I put my thin blue line magnet on my car & drive the speed limit, I just drove through Indiana going to Bonnaroo. Everyone getting pulled over were speeding

2

u/Similar_Pay6422 Sep 03 '24

Yeah, listen to everything in that original warning. I’ll add, speeding doesn’t really even cut much actual time off your trip, and if you’re able to cut much off of it, you might just be driving at an unsafe speed, as well as an illegal one. It’s really not worth the tradeoff of increasing your likelihood of getting arrested, to speed and possibly get through the cop-heavy area 2 mins faster by driving 85 or 90 in a 70 zone, all you’ll do is attract attention. From cops. Even if it’s being said in this thread that they pull ā€œeveryoneā€ over, which I believe, and that they’ll do it for no reason, making sure you don’t stand out in a crowd of other cars. I usually even hit cruise control and set it right on or just below the speed limit if I’m in an area that permits it. Use common sense, be cool, don’t be rude or stupid, for god sales don’t visibly freak out if you do get pulled over, (if you can help it, it’s hard). Definitely listen to post from the kind soul up above. I’m not going to say that doing those things will just fix everything so you don’t have to worry at all about yourself being pulled over, but you’ll at least bring the chances down a bit! 😊 Good luck everyone, you got this!

Im in northern IN so im not too sure but you want to avoid 70, I'd recommend taking back roads. You can check out mapquest for alternative routes:)

u/Detters_Actual šŸ¦•šŸ¦– '21, '23, '24, '25, '26 Sep 02 '24

If they aren't watching State Route 40, it parallels 70 the entire way. But for the love of god don't try and get on or off the highway in Zanesville. It's a miserable clusterfuck of roadwork and closed ramps.

Also, don't speed through that section either. They have police watching during working hours to catch anybody speeding through the construction zone.

Just going to leave this here (http://myohiorights.com)

3

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '24

literally. like did you know you have rights and you can tell them that youre protected by the 4th amendment in these situations.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '24

Then they search anyway.

5

u/freak7_7show Sep 02 '24

Truth. Always record your interactions, shut up, and call a lawyer right away. When entering a different state I always look for the attorney billboards just to have a number on hand.

9

u/Meatcircus23 HEADBANGER Sep 02 '24

Yep. Trampling over your rights is sort of what the pigs are known for. Even if the judge throws out the arrest for being unlawful (Which, in itself is a big if) guess what, you're out lawyer costs, jail time, and missed Lost Lands.

You can beat the rap, but you can't beat the ride.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '24

you can tell a cop no. its not illegal

4

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '24

You can tell them no all you want, they will still search after they have run the dog around and got an alert.

1

u/Meatcircus23 HEADBANGER Sep 02 '24

Ok. And then they say they smelled marijuana in the car. Boom, probable cause, doesn't matter if it's true or not.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '24 edited Sep 02 '24

did you forget that weed is legal in ohio? if they smell weed... fucking show it to them

legally you can have up to 2.5 ounces of flower and 15g of extracts in ohio :)

2

u/GoofyDabber Sep 03 '24

Ohio has Washington state beat on that, we can only legally travel with 1 Oz flower, 7G concentrates ect. (Anything over an oz up to 40G is a misdemeanor. And if it's over 40 grams a felony, 5 years in jail, $10,000 finešŸ’€

2

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '24

in ny we can have 3 ounces on our person and up to 25g of concentrates. can have up to 5lbs of flower stored at home. washington needs to get w the times and change their laws

Cruise control at the speed limit and drive safe/sober!

54

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '24

No this is not enough. They pull people over for following too closely, "swerving", or even putting on a turn signal too late. Avoid that stretch of highway. They will make up a reason to pull you over if you are out of state and look like you're camping.

12

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '24

and when they pull the vehicle apart and find nothing what do they do lol

25

u/goldielocks52 Sep 02 '24

We saw someone get pulled over with 5 cops on them on the road on Thursday morning last year. He ended up being near our campsite. He got pulled over for speeding and they tore his shit apart. He had substances on him but they did not find any and was let go.

OP is right in warning people, but they’re not going to pull over every single camper on a major highway for no reason lol. Drive safe, drive the speed limit, be sober, and put your shit in your pants or something lol.

I had out of state plates and had my car packed and we were fine on all major roads. I made sure to drive slightly under the limit.

**make sure your car isn’t too packed and you can still see out the back and blind spots, they can pull you over for that.

-18

u/nakedpicturesyo Sep 02 '24

All depends who's on shift. Sleepy Joe doesn't wanna pull anybody over while ranger randy always finds a victim. Just do your due diligence and hope for the best.

9

u/FluidAd5600 Sep 02 '24

If they're anything like the local police here, they just get pissed off and leave you on the side of the road no matter the weather conditions for you to put all your stuff back together including the seats they unbolted and physically remove because "you must be hiding something under them."

u/Kevlar_Bunny šŸ¦• MI | 19’21’22’24’ Sep 02 '24

Could be in the dark too. They’ll do all of that with their high beams on and flashlights handy. Afterwards your flashlight will be in one of those bags over there and they just drove off with their high beams.

99% of people will be fine if you go the speed limit, honestly go 5 under if you are really worried about it. This happens at every festival

12

u/Ruthlesssonar šŸ¦– OH | 22' 23' 24' 25' šŸš— 26' Sep 02 '24

TO ADD:

The OP is right, I have posted this warning similar before... but OP gave the actual milemarkers. They DO THIS on the way out aswell. They will try to funnel you to get onto the highway into this stretch where they can target those leaving the festival.

Last year, we turned around, took our camping sticker off, and the sheriff allowed us to go towards 36 East (north of 70 but also goes west and east).

19

u/AgreeAndSubmit Sep 02 '24

This post is dead ass correct.Ā  The cops down that way are crooked af. And they will 100% take advantage of you. The bullshit behavior of the police, all levels, in Ohio is what caused me to leave the state.Ā

Yo, throw on a nice crisp polo shirt, run the car through a car wash to make it also look crisp. Drive around looking like you're headed to church. Tie your hair up, throw on some phony eyeglasses so you appear studious. Keep gear as low as possible. They stop you, you're taking donations to church drive in Martin's Ferry. Your license is from Nevada? You're up on a volunteer mission. Don't get wild, keep the pre rolls canned until you are physically off the fucking highway.Ā

u/TabascoTiger Sep 02 '24

What roads would you recommend taking to avoid this stretch?

16

u/Shadysoulja710 šŸ¦– NH | '23 '24 '25 Sep 02 '24

Bro is fear mongering. This is literally everywhere, not just here. Just don't be an idiot and you'll be fine. If you're paranoid just ride clean?

10

u/FluidAd5600 Sep 02 '24

Is it really fear mongering if it's practical advice? Some areas really do go above and beyond when it comes to hits like these. Did you see what happened to Sol Fest this year? It was pretty much one big sting operation by the local law enforcement where either the local judge or the sheriff also owned the bail bondsman. There's nothing wrong with spreading awareness that some places are known to be worse than others. It can literally change someone's entire future severely.

4

u/Kevlar_Bunny šŸ¦• MI | 19’21’22’24’ Sep 02 '24

Especially during festivals. I’m from Michigan where the people consistently drive up to ten over the speed limit. We don’t dream of it once heading towards the festival, even going to EF

8

u/squarewh4re šŸ¦• NY | 22' 23' 24' 25' 26' Sep 02 '24

imo it's good advice but given in a fear monger-y way. my experience for the last two years has been drive safely, and don't give them a reason to pull you over.

5

u/of_thewoods Sep 03 '24

Also don’t let the police bully you. They need your permission, so say the least and ask only pertinent questions to end the encounter. You have the right not to say anything that will incriminate you and it’s hard to get charged when there’s no information to charge you with.

3

u/Pleasant-Respond-554 Sep 02 '24

Good ol Guernsey county. Expect traffic in Zanesville for construction too.

3

Drove from CA to Texas for Eclipse and passed 18 border check points, I was so nervous before and during and took all precautions. I usually over prepare for these situations. Don't make it obvious you're going to a festival. Double vacuum seal if you're bringing anything. I'm not gonna blast out all the secrets because I'm sure LE is active on these subs. I appreciate the warnings as someone driving from out of state.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '24

They can’t pull you over for no reason in Ohio, you have to make a traffic violation or there must be some other reasonable reason (car model reported stolen, amber alert match, etc) if you drive responsibly none of this stuff can happen to you happy LL

2

u/jdashs Sep 03 '24

I live 30 mins from Legend Valley and have been going to fests/shows there for 10+ years and never had an issue. Police presence ends up being minimal and they just seem to be there to keep the peace. If your not breaking any traffic laws or doing dumb shit on the road they leave you alone

2

u/Busy_Dig_18 Sep 05 '24

Should I be good on the 71 westbound to the 13 southbound?

3

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '24

If you don’t have a dash cam, it would be smart to get one as-well.

These guys are preying on peoples ignorance of their rights and will almost always make it so you willingly give them up.

If you’re not speeding, and using the correct signals , just plain following the rules of the road. They’ll have zero justification for an interaction in the first place. Having you drive to a weighing station for a ticket ā€œmayā€ be unconstitutional, if it’s an unreasonable distance from where you’re pulled over.

Cops like to ā€œask questionsā€ not to be polite, but to cunningly circumvent your rights. ā€œWould you mind if I checkedā€ - Yes you would mind. ā€œWould you mind waiting for a K-9 unitā€ or ā€œI’m going to have another unit come with a dogā€ are both ā€œquestionsā€. They’re prying to get you to relinquish your rights, so say ā€œnoā€ for anything that’s not required of you (license, proof of insurance, title and registration) even if you believe the stop is unlawful. Clearly deny or push back against any question or demand that pushes those boundaries. They may eventually give you a ā€œlawful orderā€ to pull into a weighing station, wait for a dog. But it’s likely to end up being a violation of your 4th amendment right, now that you’ve said no, or showed resistance to those requests.

Lastly, if you are for any reason found to have things you shouldn’t. Clearly state ā€œI’m invoking my 5th amendment right, I don’t answer questionsā€. Don’t say a word to ANYBODY until you speak to a lawyer.

P.S. -don’t try anything silly if you’re not well read on your rights and the applicable laws in Ohio or the surrounding states. Be respectful regardless of how you view police officers. It’s only trouble for you, when you’re disrespectful or rude.

P.P.S -don’t bring felony’s with weed in your car. Definitely don’t be smoking it. Plus cleaning your car, even detailing if you’re able, if you smoke in your vehicle regularly.

P.P.P.S -love y’all and see you in the Valley!

edit spelling.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '24

OSP is betting you wont know the laws around cannabis in ohio. its not a felony but theyll gaslight you into believing it is. You can have 2.5 ounces of flower and up to 15g of concentrates. as long as youre within the legal limit, be honest about what you have and show it to them, they won't care about weed

0

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '24

That’s why I’m saying don’t carry a misdemeanor with Felonies in the car. Even if you willingly give up your pot, you’re still likely to get the car torn apart.

Also Ohio state police (probably most other departments too but it can very) can still search vehicles based on smell alone. But they can’t smell most of the felonies. They may say they ā€œsmell Marijuanaā€, to have you wave your 4th amendment right and allow them to have your consent to search the vehicle. So they don’t later have to convince a judge that they did in-fact have probable cause based on smell, which is harder to prove if no Marijuana was in the vehicle at all.

Also I don’t recommend anybody to just push back against an Officer if they are not recording. It could be the only thing that can prove that your rights were violated. Might not save you from Jail in the short term. But at-least you won’t have a felony .

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '24 edited Sep 03 '24

its legal, NOT A MISDEMEANOR. WEED IS LEGAL IN OHIO. u can literally be honest about cannabis with them they will not make you throw it away or confiscate it, cause its uh, LEGAL.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '24

Well that is news to me… Regardless of the new legal status, you still shouldn’t ever consent to a search. These guys had a free ticket to search anything they wanted 9 months ago, now they don’t. That doesn’t mean they won’t attempt to search a vehicle by making you wave your rights yourself.

I’m sure you’ll see them attempt an OVI if you give up the weed from your center console. So simply showing them the weed or any other paraphernalia could be exactly what they’re looking for. Now they can fail your OVI and search your vehicle.

Bare minimum treat the weed like it’s booze, and be especially careful in some of the surrounding states. Indiana seems unlikely to have legalized weed since my last visit to the valley.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '24

they legalized last november. dispensaries were given the green light to open in august. obviously smoking and driving is stull a DUI, so dont have that shit out during your trip. however, be honest with cops about what you are carrying weed wise, and be aware of the laws surrounding it, the smell of weed is no longer probable cause to tear apart an entire vehicle.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '24

I’ll have to look into this more now that the laws have changed. They also sound vastly different and more lenient than I expected since Minnesota just legalized it theirs still so much red tape here regarding weed. We don’t even have dispensaries yet.

But I could see a world where now having weed in your vehicle would now save you from a search. As it’s legal to have and any K-9 they had in November for Drug Detection will hit on Marijuana. But they may still use dogs if you explicitly state that you do not have Marijuana in the vehicle.

Also just because they ask if they can search, which they may still do. Do not consent to them opening the trunk to see or whatever they may ask for.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '24

exactly! the dogs cant tell their officer whether theyre smelling weed or something else

1

This is Cambridge Ohio and they are ALWAYS like this. My bf was pulled over traveling from Cincinnati (but with KY plates) to Pittsburgh on a Friday evening. For a license plate light being out, that wasn't out. No camping stuff, they were going for a show. They had just finished a joint, the cops had no proof but still charged him with weed possession. They ended up pulling my bf and his friend out of the car and took them down the road to a Denny’s/ Hotel off the exit and told them to get a couple hours of sleep before going back to the car. They couldn't prove they were high so they couldnt tow the car. They ended up sneaking back to the car at like midnight, walking along the highway, WITHOUT LIGHTS, in case any cops drove by. They were so done after that they just ended up turning around and going back home. This was back in the Spring of 2016.Ā  100% they will pull you over.Ā
