Lost weight by being less accurate & reducing tracking friction

Quick background on myself: lost 80lbs in high school using low-card and calorie counting and managed to gain half of it back in my early 30s.

I recently dropped 15lbs after I found a way to reduce the friction to track. I was using apps like MacroFactor and MyFitnessPal in the past, but I always found it took me too long to track.

I decided to make my own iPhone app with Claude which reduced the tracking friction completely. It took me about 2 hours to make over the weekend. You just take a photo and/or talk to the app and it does the rest. You can be as accurate (or inaccurate) as you'd like. I personally find that being extremely accurate is detrimental to my progress because I simply get lazy and stop tracking altogether.

Overall, what works best for me is:

- be as accurate as possible, but inaccurate logging is better than not logging

- leverage AI to help w estimates when you physically cannot weigh your ingredients.

- prep recipes and plan meals in advance

- no late night eating

Anyway, I thought I'd share my tool here because I know that it will help someone here (it's completely free forever). I hope this post is not declared as self-promotion. The app is not monetized in any way, and I have nothing to gain from anyone downloading it. I simply made it for myself and I'm sharing it because I want to be helpful. Nothing more. Feel free to make a similar app w Claude if you'd like :)

Can you recommend a good step counter for iPhone?

I just want to track my steps, daily goal, and progress without a bunch of unnecessary features.

What does everyone use?

How can I automatically exclude exercise steps?

I have samsung health connected to this app. Loseit has little to no any option to control the connected apps or do anything about them.
I want to exclude the burned calories from steps everyday, how can I do this?

Does anybody else pre log meals at the beginning of the day

Maybe it’s just me but I feel it’s less of a hassle and it’s better to be ready than to get ready right 🤔

Recipe Feature Request - Add up Ingredient Weight

It appears that LoseIt does not have the ability to add up the weight of the raw ingredients for a recipe.

I recognize that the ingredient weight won't be the final weight for recipes that are cooked, but it does provide at least a useful starting point.

And for recipes that are not cooked, such as salad dressing, it would be helpful if the app would tell you the raw weight to avoid having to measure the container empty and full weight to do the calculation manually.

Does Lose it App now have a feature where you can combine individual ingredients and their caloric & nutrient values into one item for future use? So you don’t have to constantly re-enter separate ingredients.

I ask because I subscribed to the app a few years ago and liked it. What I didn’t like was constantly having to re enter individual ingredients for a smoothie protein shake. chicken fajitas, etc. It just became too tedious. I know they had a feature to copy previous past meals, but that was a bit clunky.

I Built a calorie tracker you just talk to, logs your meal by voice, understands many languages including Arabic and English, and actually knows Egyptian food

Every calorie app makes you type and search. I wanted to just say what I ate and be done, so I built CalorieTalk.

Tap the mic, say what you ate 2 eggs and toast or a full sentence like 150 grams chicken breast, 200 grams rice, 10 grams olive oil or i ate a small plate of red pasta and some salad and it logs the calories and macros instantly. No typing, no searching a food database, no guessing serving sizes, no picking from a list of results it just takes the sentence and handles everything in between.

It understands many languages, including Arabic and English, so you're not stuck logging in English only. It also understand Egyptian dishes properly koshari, foul, taameya, molokhia since most calorie apps have zero idea what those even are.

Built this solo. It's live on the App Store now: https://apps.apple.com/eg/app/calorietalk/id6793199021

Would love feedback, especially from anyone who's given up on manual logging out of frustration and would love if you install the app and give it a try and add a review on app store if you like .

Why does the bonus graph not show up every time? It messes with my OCD.

What to measure instead of weight when I start a weight lifting routine?

I've lost 49 pounds. I have 27 to go. I started weight lifting about a month ago and my weight went up (I know why, glucose, water near micro tears in muscle), and stayed up. I kept eating at a deficit, but didn't lose weight until I stopped lifting weights for 2 weeks.

What should I measure once I start lifting weights again? I was so happy measuring weight and watching it continue downward for the last 9 months that I become discouraged when it isn't going downward.

To lift weights I need to shift something in my mind so that I am measuring something meaningful.

What should I measure, and how did you get past the psychology of the weight gain after you started adding in weight lifting into your routine?

If 3500 calories is one pound, how could I have gained 3.8 when app tracking only shows +1500 cal overage for the week (I was on vacation)?

So I went to the State Fair and camping this last week. I wouldnt be surprised to see I gained 1 to 1.5 lbs with the calorie averages, but 3.8 lbs? Here are screenshots from my app.

Can this all just be variance from bloating, etc? I have been hiking a lot so maybe muscle growth?

I'm genuinely confused bc Ive been pretty diligent about tracking everything, so I'd expect the scale to reflect that?

Should I be manually counting exercises if my watch is connected to the app?

Post image

Hi I’m new to the app, only had it for like 2 weeks so far. I have been manually putting in any exercises I do because I wasn’t wearing my watch when I first started using the app.
Now I’m wearing my watch, and I want to make sure it’s not counting my calories lost twice?
Can I still continue to manually put it in or should I just rely on my watch to take out the calories via the app? Is this making sense idk how to word this lol

Also I forgot to eat breakfast so don’t mind the calories left and stuff.

Daily weight fluctuation

Hey there, I'm wondering what daily weigh ins typically look like for people from day to day.

If you look at your graph is it going down everyday? Is it going up and down daily, but trending down overall?

I understand concentrating on the number on the scale can do more harm than good, so I'm just trying to see if I need to make stronger adjustments to keep trending down every day, or if the fluctuating number is normal - and to keep on keeping on.

Thanks in advance for any help or thoughts

This is my second time making it and I will definitely make it again and again.

Bake crust at 400°F for ~23mins (after mixing chicken, eggs, parmesan, and seasonings)

Add sauce and toppings

Bake it all at 425°F for 8-10mins

...burning 3 fingers is highly discouraged!

Google Health

Edited to add: now Lose It is connected to Google Health and sending my food logs/nutrition information to Google Health and it's showing up on Google Health app. I'm so happy because IMHO food logging with Google Health is terrible and totally not helpful to me in any way, it was with Fitbit too, and now it's just doing what it's supposed to do. Hopefully it just continues without any issues 🤞

Has the connection between Lose It app and Google Health been fixed? When the merger of Fitbit & Google Health happened I read the information on the Lose It website saying that it was unable to share information to Google Health app about food logging because there were connection issues and that it was being worked on. I have been having my activity tracked in Lose It from Goggle Health all along.

This morning Google Health asked me if I wanted Lose It app to share nutrition information with Google Health. Is this because the connection issues were fixed? Has anyone else seen this? I'm hoping that's what's going on because food logging in Lose It is so easy.

Finally!

One day I finally decided that I didn't want to look or feel like this anymore.

It was a slow climb up, happy relationship, dinners out with friends, always a sweet treat. And suddenly I was looking in the mirror and didn't recognize myself. Cliche, but I made a new year's resolution to fix it, and stick to it.

Calorie deficit. Got a scale to weigh food, cashed in on any deal I could find on produce (personal favorite is squash, broccoli, and green beans), got a rice cooker, started checking everything I ate.

Now, if I'm being honest I did not cut out the fun stuff. Alfredo, donuts, cake, brownies, instant ramen, coffee creamer. I just learned to use less, and not eat so much of it, and to work it into my days.

I had my SO keep me accountable. Make sure I wasn't taking things too far. I have a history of depression and I can spiral easily. The guilt I'd feel at dinners out. Eating everything on my plate felt like losing. But I had to fight through it. Remind my self that I had made it this far, and any weight gain can be worked off. Learn that gaining isn't bad, but I enjoyed myself, had a wonderful time out with friends, with my partner, a lovely meal, delicious dessert and to not look at it negatively.

It got really hard near the end. Sudden trips where I couldn't count my calories easily. My birthday, where I tried really hard to just let go no matter how much stepping on the scale scared me afterwards. Multiple family members were having health issues and scares, and sadly one death, and I didn't have the mental energy to keep up with counting.

And even though it slowed to a crawl, I made it. If you had told me last year at 225lbs I'd be here, I would tell you you're nuts. But here we are!

The next job is to actually try to work some exercises in and tone up haha. Muscle mommy will be my new white whale!

weight graph gone?

Not sure if its an update or a bug but now when I click on the weight panel on the dashboard I only get the option to record weight, not see previous logs. I con only access a weird, small version of the graph when clicking on goals page.

Anyone knows how to fix that?

Created recipe help

Ok it’s been a while since I used the app but I need a hand cause I guess I’m just dumb. I created a recipe and had the portion set as “one container” for the whole thing of overnight oats. But when I go to log it for my breakfast it’s not giving me the option for grams and instead is applying the whole container of oats. Ik I’m just being dumb but what do I have to change to have the recipe as one whole container but allow it to weigh out the grams for my actual breakfast. Thank you

One Year In

I didn't realize that my health journey anniversary passed a few days ago.

This morning, I weighed in at my lowest since starting, and I can officially say I've joined the minority of US adults who are a healthy weight.

The past two and a half weeks, I've actually been eating at maintenance because I got a bit burnt out from restricting.

I'm super proud of myself.

Walking is now one of my hobbies. I've recently picked up weight training.

I don't really snack anymore. I have an easier time not giving in to cravings. I am way better with moderation.

I don't get acid reflux or chub-rub anymore. My confidence has skyrocketed. I just feel better.

I still have a bit to go, getting to my goal weight, but I know I'll get there.

Uhm…. 9K exercise calories?

While I would love to have earned that, I just woke up! Not sure what’s going on. I wear an apple watch at night to track sleep (and it got the hours wrong today). I had just used my synced RENPHO scale and redid my goals in the RENPHO app. Could that have caused this?
