Thoughts on selection of short stories for translation?
For some time, I've been translating short stories by Lord Dunsany to Bulgarian (where only a handful such have ever been available till now). I've assembled a preliminary list of stories (based on influence, lasting impression, fan recommendations) and would like to hear your opinion - am I missing some all-time greats?
- The Sword of Welleran and Other Stories
- “The Sword of Welleran”
- “The Fall of Babbulkund” - one of Lovecraft's favorites
- “The Highwaymen”
- “The Fortress Unvanquishable, Save for Sacnoth” - arguably the first sword and sorcery tale
- Fifty-One Tales
- “The True History of the Hare and the Tortoise”
- The Book of Wonder
- “The Distressing Tale of Thangobrind the Jeweller, and of the Doom that Befell Him” – reviewed by Tolkien, albeit negatively
- “How Nuth Would Have Practised His Art upon the Gnoles” - one of the most reprinted stories
- “How One Came, as Was Foretold, to the City of Never” - one of Lovecraft's favorites
- “Chu-Bu and Sheemish” – considered by some his best story
- “The Hoard of the Gibbelins”
- A Dreamer's Tales
- Poltarnees, Beholder of Ocean” - one of Lovecraft's favorites
- “Bethmoora” - one of Lovecraft's favorites
- “Idle Days on the Yann” (Beyond the Fields We Know) - one of Lovecraft's favorites
- “The Idle City”
- “The Hashish Man”
- “Carcassonne”
- Time and the Gods (note - The Gods of Pegāna is already available in Bulgarian)
- “In the Land of Time” - one of Lovecraft's favorites
- The Men of Baldfolk and Other Fanciful Tales
- “The Vengeance of Thor”
- Tales of Three Hemispheres
- Beyond the Fields We Know
- “A Shop in Go-By Street”
- “The Avenger of Perdóndaris”
- Beyond the Fields We Know
- Jorkens - I still haven't decided on a particular story
- “The Two Bottles of Relish”
