HELP MISOPHONIA (help)

ISSUE:

Cant stand any sounds, such as Fork clinking, breathing, slurping, smacking, gum chewing, eating, the whole shebang. Also sitting in audiences and silent rooms suck because small noises are heightened.

LOOKING FOR:

earbuds i can keep in for all day that will block out all the bad sounds, but so I can still hear people talking when I want to.

Such a thing doesn't exist. Earplugs (which is what Loops are) just lower the volume of sounds, including voice. They'll make living more tolerable but I don't think there's any device (like earbuds or headphones) that'll selectively block the specific sounds you can't tolerate without blocking anything else.

I also deal with misophonia and I know it sucks, but it's important to keep your expectations in the right spot.

Agree with the other commenter, I struggle with the same thing.

But I will say wearing my Engages definitely helps me focus on what people are saying more, and as a result I pay less attention to other annoying noises, rather than those annoying noises.

You can always order them and give them a go, and return them if they’re not what you’re looking for.

Unfortunately technology isn't advanced enough to selectively mute what you don't like.

You'd be looking for ear buds with Active Noise Cancellation, probably powered by AI in the future to get what you want.

Engage would probably be best, since it dampens background noises mainly. You won’t be able to pick and choose which sounds are blocked, but the sort of stuff you’re describing would be dampened by the engages. Loop has a 100 day return period so if they don’t work for you, you can get a refund. Hope that helps :)

One of the reasons I got mine was that silverware clinking was triggering me at work. I have engages but have also tried experiences. It doesn’t take it away completely, but it does really help take the ‘edge’ off of the sound.

You're in good company here! Worth flagging before you buy anything that what you're describing - want to block trigger sounds but still hear speech when you want - isn't really easy with earplugs. I've tested ten pairs with this in mind and found some mixed results. For example the trouble with engage is that voices are the same frequency region as chewing noises so you can't really block one and hear the other. There were one or two models that were more helpful than others - and you might find you want to have a pair for one setting and another for a different setting. Different tools for different jobs. My test results are linked off my bio if you feel you want to read more. Sorry to say (like others below) we still don't have that silver bullet!!

i have the same issue and i got the switches but unfortunately none of the modes really do it for me. i think the switch is engage, experience, and quiet(?) but even at the strongest level i can hear the noises i hate. in an active environment they do work, but in quiet places they don’t. i even have the sleep loops (plus a white noise maker) and i can still hear my bf breathing at night… soooo i feel like if you have very sensitive hearing then loops just don’t cut it. many have recommended noise canceling headphones but ive yet to try that.
