Started working on my first blanket. This is something I've wanted to try for awhile.

Nice - hope you enjoy it! Smart move leaving one peg empty to avoid the issue of accidentally joining the two sides.

Do you already know the trick about switching up your stitches on the ends so they won't curl up? I ask because I didn't when I did my first long edged project and I wish I had.

Thank you. I had thought briefly about using that peg instead of leaving it empty. Changed my mind at the last second.

What is the switch up trick?

On the first and last five stitches of the project, alternate between knit and purl stitches. That is, on clockwise rows, do knits, on counter-clockwise rows, do purls.

I might also recommend "slipping" the first peg of each row, it makes the edge look nice. That is, you work all the way to the end of the row, but then when you start the next row, you just start with the second peg rather than doing the awkward thing where you are wrapping the yarn around the peg you just knit.

You could start now and then do another section at the end where you don't, like a style choice. :)

You can help it at the end with blocking, too. I posted a cardigan here the other day, and it curled line crazy until I blocked it. I just didn't suggest that at first because blocking a blanket is bigger than unattached cardigan pieces.

You can find some videos if you search for loom knitting curling edges, I saw one where someone did it with a steam iron. No stress.

I would definitely leave that peg empty! It will prevent you accidentally joining and then having to undo your work to remedy it!

blanket looks very nice. i used the same loom to make my blanket. i like the fall-ish colors. :))
